Player Profile: Fernando Muslera
By: Franco | July 20th, 2009I would like to welcome you to my very first Blog on the Lazio Offside. Some of you may of seen me around in the comments section of the blog previously but for those of you who have not, I look forward to interacting with you in the future.
As most of you are aware, Cathal has been the main Blogger here at the Lazio offside for sometime now (and what a great job he has been doing may I add) but from this blog onwards, we will be working together on the Lazio blog as a team. We both have interesting plans for the Blog and we hope that together we can take the Lazio Blog to new levels and we do encourage that if anyone has any comments on our work that I urge you to please speak up and let us know, as we very much would appreciate any feedback received. Our aim to to keep you all up to date and interested about our club, the best and first club in Rome: Società Sportiva Lazio.

Cathal will continue to cover the Mercato, pre-season fixtures ect and I for the time being will be concentrating on a new concept – Player Profiles. Over the next few months, I plan to profile each and every player in the Lazio squad, whether they be current or freshly put pen to paper so that by season start, you all would have a good run down of our squad and what our players are all capable of. I plan to kick this off today with none other than; Fernando Muslera.

Full name: Néstor Fernando Muslera Micol
Date of birth: June 16, 1986 (age 23)
Place of birth: Montevideo, Uruguay
Height: 1.90 m (6 ft 3 in)
Playing position: Goalkeeper
Squad Number: 86
Career to date:
2004 until 2007 – Montevideo Wanderers – 14 appearances
2006 until 2007 – Nacional (Loan) – 15 appearances
2007 until present – Lazio – 24 appearances
Muslera started his football career with Montevideo Wanderers in 2004, then joining Nacional on loan in 2006. Durring this time his appearances were limited but showed enough promise to gain himself a transfer to Lazio.
Muslera joined Lazio at the close of the August 2007 transfer window for €3 million as a replacement for the retired Angelo Peruzzi and after plans to sign Juan Pablo Carrizo were delayed due to the non-EU status of the Argentine.
Muslera made his full debut for Lazio in a 3-1 home win against Cagliari on 16 September 2007 earning himself four more consecutive starts. This run of starts however, ended in a disappointing performance in Lazio’s 5-1 home loss to Milan on 7 October that saw him benched in favor of veteran Marco Ballotta. This was pretty much the end of a disappointing season for Nando and most fans from this point wrote him off as a waste of space, myself included.
Despite his poor start, Muslera continued with Lazio and started his second season with the club as second-choice keeper for the 2008-09 season, behind new signing Juan Pablo Carrizo. Carrizo (a player that we Laziale thought would be our savior – more about that in another post!) ended up being more of a let down then any other keeper the wear the pride of Rome jersey. The rise and fall of Carrizo came as a good news, bad news scenario but fans were not to know of what was to become of the young Uruguian. Muslera regained the starting spot in January 2009 following the run of poor form by Carrizo, coupled with conflicts with team management. With each and every game Nando continued to impress and prove his critics wrong. Not only did he step it up a notch but was even voted on several serie A polls as the Goalkeeper of the round on more than his fair share of occasions. An amazing turn around from the player that arrived and disappointed at the Italian capital only 12 months earlier.
With Muslera in Goals a newly born Lazio team focused their energy on winning the Coppa Italia tournament to gain their place in Europe. Sure enough, Lazio achieved their goal and won the Coppa Italia final on May 13, 2009 and Muslera ended up being one of the hero’s of that night as he saved two penalties as Lazio emerged victorious 6-5 in the shootout after the match ended 1-1 in extra time.

With Carrizo sent out on loan, Lazio have repaid their faith in the youngster as he starts the new 2009/10 serie A season as Lazio’s 1st choice keeper behind newly signed Bizzari – who no doubt is set to give the Uruguian a run for his money. We fans are hoping for a repeat performance of last season (or maybe go one better) and start off with leading us to victory in the super coppa next month against Inter. Although Muslera has already been called up for the Uruguayan national team, he has yet to earn his first cap. We wish him all the best for the 2009/10 season and we hope he earns a spot for the Uruguay national team also.
Forza Lazio, Forza Muslera!

@ Mitar: Just a few ex-girlfriends of mine…
Haha, I can only wish. I think they modelled last season’s kit, not exactly sure who they are. I would like to publicly welcome Franco as my co-blogger. We’re in for a busy season and with new ideas, I need another pair of hands and I’m certain Franco is the man for the job. A great first post and I look forward to many more.

Top first post!!! Nando Muslera lalalala, the fact that he isn’t Uruguay’s no.1 is an extreme injustice IMO. But if his country isn’t gonna give him the recognition, then we should. His deal expires in 2011, give him a looong deal now because Nando is a potential titolare for the next decade.
Also if you ever need a ‘third blogger’, look no further hahah.

Ya like everyone else, great job man. I’m looking forward to more posts from you.
Also I love how Lazio now has two world class keepers that we can use especially now that we will be playing in the Europa leage it will be good to not have to worry about fatigue knowing either keeper can do well in net. That goal Craiova scored on Bizzari was a tough one to stop by any keeper.

And perhaps most importantly, unlike his compatriot JP, Bizzarri expects a fight to be No.1 goalkeeper. Don’t forget, this guy was at Real Madrid as a kid; he knows waht it’s all about.
With Muslera and Bizzarri, I have a great deal of confidence.

Welcome to the blog Franco, I’m sure Cathal needs some help considering the stellar work he does, only one complaint, it’s Uruguayan, not Uruguian. Sorry, I’m a pedant, it’s what Continental schooling does to you.
I must say I’m fascinated to find out what our squad is going to look like because the mercato hasn’t really started yet, not until the big clubs (apart from Real obviously) start spending their booty. Pandev WILL go, I’m sure, so many clubs who covet him have the cash, they’re just waiting to spend it, most players bought this season will have terrible pre-seasons apart from (clever clever) Real Madrid.
P.S. If you give me the phone numbers of the three women all is forgivenPosted from

This blog is going to be even better now. The main thing I like about it is that it’s updated a lot, the inside info is onpoint and objective and last but not least Cathal’s writing style is very good. Keep up the good work and lots of luck to you Franco! I’ll try to interact more by leaving more comments.

Hi Franco. Great Post! Im really glad you are doing the blogs now, I have always enjoyed your comments. You and I have very similar thoughts! Im really glad that you are doing the player profile things cause although I am a Lazio supporter, most of our players are unknown argentineans and stuff so no one knows em.
Are you going to include past legend player profiles? It would mean the world to my pop Mick if you did a profile on his favourite all time player Paul Okon. I understand he was once a Lazio star wasn’t he?
Keep it up champ, and Forza Lazio!

Why do you guys rate Muslera so highly? Personally I think he, Bizzari and Carrizo are all rubbish. It wasnt too long ago we had keepers of the calibre of Peruzzi and Marchegiani in between our sticks.
Good post though Franco, keep it up! Do you have any other anti roma pics? Very very funny that last one haha!!

I agree with Craggers, bring on the Anti-Roma material!

Franco, I don’t know you but great post buddy! Does anyone know the latest on emptying our garbage of the article 17 pezze di merda Ledesma? Is he staying or going?
Cazzi cornuto wish he Pandev and De Silvestri would all take the first garbage truck out of Formello and va fanculo and earn my team some money for the mercato so we can sign some real players!
Who’s with me on this! Forza Lazio!

Franco, AS Roma is not merda, we might take it up the culo, but that doesnt mean we are merda!

As Paul “Occa” Okon, Craggers, Moggers, Alphonse Gangitano and Senti are all the same person, I find it very difficult to provide any kind of feedback…

Hi All,
Thank you for the warm welcome and approval of my 1st post and player profile idea on the blog.
The pic of the girls is from the 2008/09 season when they were modelling the new Lazio jersey. The season before that, Lazio had Miss Italia do it as she was a fan of Lazio. I did not realise how much you guys would like the pic… To keep you all happy I plan on posting more of these pics in my upcoming blogs
@ Cristiano, I believe we are all with you when it comes time for Muslera to increase his contract past 2011. We should tie the man down at least another 4-5 years after this past, especially if he repeats last seasons performance.
@ Pepe, my apologies Uruguayan is indeed the correct spelling!! I won’t be making that mistake in future!
@ Paul Okon / Moggers / Craggers (who ever you are), I do plan on maybe doing a “former Lazio stars” project in the near future so keep an eye out for that but I can’t really say that Paul Okon would be considered as one (Star). Sorry mate, Maybe ask a Socceroo’s blog to do one for you!
Thanks again for all the support, keep up the comments and feedback.

@ Paul Okon, if he means that much to you – I may consider it, but most Laziale would agree he wasn’t a great influence within the Lazio club and barely started any games hence why he was sold to Fiorentina without any regrets. Another thing, I don’t ever remember Sven or Sergio ever praising the man, unless you can provide evidence, I’m just going to disregard that comment!
@ Ange, you are indeed correct and as a result, Lazio is the biggest sporting association in Europe. Other than Football, the Lazio club also participates in another 37 other sports such as Horse riding, Cricket and Water Polo. Sorry but I don’t rate olympiacos!

Paolo might be an Aussie legend, but an injury interrupted time at Lazio doesn’t quite cut it when we had some of the world’s best playing for us. Alphonse Gangitano needs to get back to the set of Underbelly. Bunch of Victorian cuntss.
If you ever end up doing more player profiles, can I put a request in for my favourite…Fabio Firmani?
Posted from
Australia

-

@Cristiano, Fabio Firmani is a MUST for the player profiles but I doubt Aussie Paul will be… unless I run out of idea’s which is highly unlikley!!

Ciao laziali.
I deleted all those obsessive Paul Okon comments. If I’m right and I’m fairly sure I am, that was one troublemaking Aussie who got a few pals in on the act. I don’t like banning anyone from commenting on the blog but spamming, imitating regulars and just general misleading of our readers will not be tolerated if it goes past a certain point and here it did.
Trust me when I say I will make it incredibly difficult, if not impossible for those guys to comment again.
