Player Of The Season
By: cathal | June 5th, 2009As usual, I would like to thank you for your votes in last week’s poll. I asked you what position in our team you felt was most in need of strengthening and you answered as follows:
Central Defence – 59%
Attacking Midfield – 18%
Central Midfield - 9%
Right Midfield – 7%
Forward - 7%
Very interesting results. I am not surprised that the majority thought the centre of defence needed the most work. At the end of the day, our downfall this season was mainly due to a persistent habit of conceding goals. I have to agree that it is a weak area of the team but my vote went to the centre of midfield. With Ledesma having to play almost every game and injury troubling Dabo and Matuzalem on a regular basis, I think it is pivotal that we get a new guy in here as quick as possible. A strong core will benefit us greatly and I would hope it would improve us across the pitch. I am actually amazed that a large group of fans said the offensive midfield area of the team needs immediate improvement. I can’t see why so if you voted for this area, please state your reasons in the comments box. You have intrigued me.

i don’t think there’s anyone on the planet who thinks anyone other than zarate is player of the season.

I am one of those who thinks that we need another attacking midfielder.
I do not agree that we need central midfielder.Yes Dabo and Matuzalem had injury problems, but what if next season they don’t?Also Brocchi can play at that position too.
We really need someone who will “feed” our strikers and who will organize the play properly.Ledesma tries to do this, but his main role is to ruin opponents game.Delio tried something with Mauri, but he simply is not up to the task.It is stupid that Zarate comes back all the way to the half of the field to receive the ball, than he is not as dangerous as when he receives it on 30 or 20 meters in front of the goal.
I also agree that we should look for the central defender too.We have conceded to many goals, and someone with both experience and knowledge can be very useful.Hey, this is just my opinion, everybody has right to have one…

Thanks Luka, that’s a well thought out and understandable concern. I think we have players to fill the role you speak about but I question their ability.
