Chievo – Lazio

By: cathal | August 30th, 2009

This is only second matchday of the season and already we have a mouthwatering tie on our hands. This is almost a second derby for us. Ever since Chievo first arrived in Serie A, they have caused us problem after problem culminating in a 3-0 humiliation at the Olimpico last season. Today, we will be going to Verona with revenge set firmly in our minds and hopefully the usual combination of skill and luck sees us through.

Skill and luck could be the two attributes we lack due to the fact that our defense have probably spent more time with the team doctors than they have on the pitch this week. Cribari appears to be patched up and ready to go but Siviglia will miss out. There are some concerns over the fitness of Diakite’ too and thus Radu is expected to deputise in the centre which automatically dictates that Kolarov starts on the left with Lichtsteiner on the right. Brocchi has also been ruled out which will more than likely result in a midfield combo consisting of Baronio, Dabo and Mauri. Matuzalem should get the nod ahead of Foggia in the trequartista role and it appears that Cruz is preferred to Rocchi upfront. Choosing between the two will always be a touch decision but after his midweek antics, I expected Tommaso. It will be interesting to see who the coach actually opts for. This is the line-up I predict:

Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera, Kolarov, Radu, Cribari, Lichtsteiner, Baronio, Dabo, Mauri, Matuzalem, Zarate, Cruz.

As for Chievo, they look very thin and weak on paper but the obvious dangerman is Pellissier. He has a tendency to wreak havoc if given the opportunity and the key to the game will be keeping him quiet. I don’t think they will concede too many either so I would imagine Ballardini will look to hit them on the counter with pace in a similar style to our Supercoppa triumph. I’m optimistic that we will get something out of the game and fingers crossed we can do enough to secure the crucial three points. Forza Lazio!

Previous Encounter: Lazio 0-3 Chievo (Bogdani, 27, Pellissier, 28, 84)
Last Season: Chievo 1-2 Lazio (Pellissier, 11, Pandev, 14, Mantovani og., 82)

can someone please comment on the rumours about Oleguer coming to Lazio? He isn’t even good enough for the Eredivisie I don’t see why Lotito would want to bring him in.

I heard them Gino but I doubt there’s any truth in them. It appears as if we are after Rever and only Rever. The hours are ticking away.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a round-up but Lotito commented briefly on the transfer speculation; Ledesma and Pandev are no longer a part of Lazio and while the club will look to bring in a defender, the captain believes no reinforcements are necessary and thus the club does not want to diminish the team spirit with new arrivals.

That is complete BS. We cannot be expected to perform in Europa / Coppa Italia and Serie A with the current squad. It’s only the 2nd week of the campionato and it’s already clear to the world that we are struggling in the mids and back line. Ballardini himself has admitted that in the last 10 days Lazio has
“suffered”. There is only so much they can take before the results start going the other way. Baronio and Mauri need to be removed and Foggia along with another decent play maker need to be added as far as I’m concerned. And as for defenders, if Cribari remains, IMO we still need 2 quality CB’s.

These are the types of games we would loose under D Rossi. Now we have won three while suffering significantly (Inter, Atalanta and Chievo). This builds great team spirit and confidence. Lets hope it continues. In order to do so however we need to have our keeper coach work very hard with Muslera on high balls and crosses pouring in from the flanks. Muslera is a tall keeper and should be able to out jump any attacking player but he always seems to not be able to postion himself into an advantages position to easly catch or knock balls out. His timing for jumping to catch balls is also very concerning. I have been saying this from the start of the season. Set plays will kill us if we Muslera does not command his box with authority and the defenders do not pick up late attackers jumping into prime scoring areas.

On the transfer side of things, we still need two Central Defenders badly. Everyone saw what Cribari is capable of today. I would even take Colucini and Canini (both being 2nd choices) if we cannot land the brazilians. This will allow us to grow Diakite slowly.

Today Lotito is also softening his position on Pandev and Ledesma, insisting that it is the coach who decides who plays. I see a swing in his stance as we get closer to the mercato coming to a close and both players being still a part of the squad.

I for one would love to see Ledesma back. Pandev could go to Fiorentina or Inter or ….unfortunately this may not happen until January and will thus become a delicate situation for Ballardini to manage..

Cath, what’s the story behind Cribari? My understanding was that he wanted to be placed on the transfer market to move elsewhere. I also remember Lotito offering him an extension but he refused confirming that he had made up his mind to leave thus Delio leaving him out for most of the end of last seasons fixtures. Now all of a sudden he is starting/coming on in most games. Is this because we are that desperate in derfence or because things have been patched up between Lazio and Cribari??? I personally rate the man and would love him to remain at the club for years to come.

As far as I am aware, there has always been a 6million price on Cribari. Nobody came forward with that money though.

Emilson’s problem has been with Rossi and the fans. Delio is gone but the fans are still there. He was upset at being jeered off the pitch in a game where the whole team was diabolical. He is very professional though so while he is under contract, he will play.

“Baronio and Mauri need to be removed and Foggia along with another decent play maker need to be added”

Baronio and Mauri have both been playing well. Why would you drop them from the team. Foggia doesn’t fit the system, therefore he won’t start. Simple.

Foggia is on the verge of an Azzurri call up which in itself tells you something whilst Baronio and Mauri have been terrible. Mauri has played a few OK games but Baronio….words cannot describe. If you need more proof, just look at their ratings for the game agianst Chievo.

Can’t agree Franco, Baronio has done little wrong so far and Mauri has made crucial goals in games. It’s the likes of Brocchi and Radu at centre-back which is giving us problems.

Foggia is a no-brainer for Italy when you have Cannavaro and Chiellini protecting your backline. Here, we have Cribari and some old guy.

Well Cathal, Let’s agree to disagree then :-)

Now that Stendardo will stay, do you think our 2 CB’s will now be Stendardo and Cribari? I much prefer that to the Diakite and Siviglia pairing.

Let’s see. I have no doubt that Ballardini does not want a troublemaker in the squad.

I would be surprised if Guglielmo gets reinstated. He will have to beg but the choice is there.

    We will know more tomorrow.

Terribly disappointed in this mercato. With the way the team had begun this season there was some optimism of a potential Top 6 finish and with some luck maybe higher. Now we will have to hope that we can hold on until the January window and see if anyone is still available.

Lotito terribly misjudged the market value of Pandev and Ledesma and will have to some how save face with either reintegrating them into the team or selling them at a fire sale in January. Sending Tare out to try to close deals on Lugano, Rever, & Canini only shows you that you need some negotiation sense to perform in that function. Lotito has to realize that he needs a Player Director who has the contacts and is wired into all that is happening within the mercato. He jad a good one but let his ego get in the way 2 years ago and we have never been the same. It seems that this year we were always standing at the door but never allowed in to play.
