Coppa Italia: Juventus – Lazio

By: cathal | April 22nd, 2009

Here we are, the second leg of the semi-final we have been waiting weeks for is finally upon us. Apologies for the lateness of this preview, my anti-virus kicked in and brought everything to a standstill. I’m hoping I have fixed the problem and am now set for the game of the season. I’m sure we’re all ready for this one. The game is more than just a cup tie and we all know why.

Getting our hands on some silverware would be wonderful but getting our feet into the Europa League would be every bit as sweet. That’s what’s at stake tonight; a place in the final at the Olimpico and a shot at glory and a place in Europe. With a 2-1 first leg “advantage”, our fate is in our hands and it’s up to us whether we deliver or let it slide.

The line-up picks itself really, Pandev is out so Rocchi and Zarate will start together upfront. Matuzalem and Brocchi are available for selection once again and they will slot alongside Ledesma with Foggia on the left if he is fit or Mauri if Pasqualino can’t make it. The defence should be Rozehnal and Siviglia as Diakite’ and Cribari have struggled with injury recently. Kolarov has been too good out left to be dropped and Lichtsteiner will play on the right as long as he is fit. If he can’t make it, De Silvestri will take his place. This should be the line-up:

Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera, Kolarov, Rozehnal, Siviglia, Lichtsteiner, Foggia, Ledesma, Matuzalem, Brocchi, Zarate, Rocchi.

As for Juventus, I expect the boys over at their Offside have all the information on Juve you need to know. As far as I am aware, there is a strong possibility we play a team without Nedved, Del Piero or Amauri. That would give me some relief but they are going to be strong, this is the only trophy they can realistically win and I expect them to give us a tough fight. Come what may, this should be an incredible encounter. My mouth is watering so I’m nipping off for a strong drink to get ready for the game. Forza Lazio!

Previous Encounter: Lazio 2-1 Juventus (Marchionni, 34, Pandev, 64, Rocchi, 78)
Last Season: n/a

Alessio is correct. Inter will have to overturn a 3 goal deficit tomorrow night if the Europa League spot is to go to the 7th place team. If Samp or Lazio make the final, 5th, 6th and the cup winners (or runners-up if only one of Samp and Lazio make the final) get the spot.

    So,

    5th – Europa League: guaranteed
    6th – Europa League: guaranteed
7th – Europa League: only if Sampdoria OR Lazio don’t make the final
Coppa Italia winners – Europa League: guaranteed to Lazio OR Sampdoria if they win
Coppa Italia runners-up: if it is a Sampdoria v Lazio final, the winners will get the spot unless Lazio finish 6th or above in the league, then it goes to Sampdoria no matter what. If Sampdoria win the final or are runners-up and we are not in the final, we have to come 6th to make the Europa League.

I’ve wondered about Zarate’s continuity but if Lotito doesn’t tie him down he’s insane…

Great performance from the team. 2 great goals. 2 Nedved goals denied brilliantly by Muslera. Overall, solid. Lotito must sign Zarate, who showed his quality tonight. For the final, Pandev should come in to replace Rocchi, but should be rested until then. Radu should replace Siviglia too. Otherwise, the team was perfect. Foggia had a great game too. FORZA LAZIO!!! Oh, and FORZA INTER!!!!

was a great game but de silvestri and brocchi played terrible. the ony thing about zarate is he doesnt know when to pass sometimes. rocchi was open a few times and zarate just kept taking it himself. other then this it was a brilliant game and preformance from most of the lads with 2 excellent goals(even if kolorov was extremely lucky)

lets hope we can repeat this in the last serie a fixture of the season. if we can keep the results coming we can easily move up a few positions before the end of the season.

its amazing what a difference there is when zarate has some confidence and is on scoring form!

Oh what a beauty Zarate! That goal. And against Buffon!
    Muslera 7
    Siviglia 6
    Rozehnal 6.5
    Lichsteiner 6.5
    Kolarov 6.5
    Brocchi 6
    Ledesma 6
    Matuzalem 7.5
    Foggia 6.5
    Rocchi 6
    Zarate 8

Matuzalem is so commanding in midfield. He has great touch and vision. Zarate was greedy, but did the necessary.
    Yes!

Final is one match at the Stadio Olimpico in 3 weeks, May 13th to be exact.

It’ll certainly be against Sampdoria which means we can (and must) win.

It’s not just Europe, I honestly dont really care for the 2nd-rate Europa League but it’ll help us renew contracts of our better players. Silverware is everything though, good to see us possibly take out our first title of the Lotito era.

hmm, just found out Matuzalem’s yellow rules him out of the final due to suspension.

That’s extremely disappointing, he’s been great since his injury troubles have ended.

damn, you guys better sign zarate permanently and perhaps sell them with huge profit in a year or two..
i’m a juve fan and i surely want him in our team, except that we already have too many strikers, we could definitely use a much younger striker though

oh cathal…you guys definitely deserve that win, our team played like shit, no ambition whatsoever, it might only be a coppa but still though…you can’t win a scudetto with that kind of motivation

Congrats to Lazio fans on the win yesterday. To come to Turin and outplay us, well, we didn’t play well but Lazio deserves all credit for the victory. Good luck in the final.

It`s amazing that our main player recently,Foggia, didn`t play one of his best games, but our game was almost perfect.Matuzalem was brilliant in the middle,we`ll miss him in the final…Rocchi was very bad,he was trying to do his best, but this wasn`t his game.Kolarov is beggining to play consistently and he could become a very good player. And off course,Zarate…Lotito, you must sign him ASAP,i`m becoming more and more nervous. We only got time until 30 april, true?

Good point mentioned above, Matuzalem was huge yesterday. I’m really starting to think that making his move permanent is a necessity for next year. Also, Lotito is apparently in Quatar today to work out the Zarate deal…

Yeah, Lotito and Tare are supoosed to be sorting out the Zarate deal. 30th April is the deadline but Claudio reckons formalities can be left until the 15th May. So, the deal has to be in place by the end of the month and signed within two weeks of that.

Didn’t rate Matuzalem as highly as you guys yesterday but it’s a matter of opinion I guess. Personally, I thought Ledesma was huge for a change.

@ Sinisarman: what do you want to know about Nesta and I’ll help you out.

@ Alessio: Thanks, that’s the Coppa for drama I guess.
