Genoa – Lazio

By: cathal | April 18th, 2009

Genoa will be entertaining Lazio today in the Stadio Luigi Ferraris as they look to keep ahead of the chasing pack in the race for a Champions League spot. We are looking to maintain the momentum of our derby win last weekend as we hope to carry that form into the return leg of our Coppa Italia semi-final. There is plenty at stake for both sides which leads me to believe this will be a fascinating encounter.

Il grifone have gained a reputation for destroying teams at home this season. This makes our task difficult enough but in general, they don’t lose. Somehow they find a result week in week out; an anti-Lazio in a sense. We did defeat them at home last season, although they had nothing to play for by the time that came around. So, we do have the previous to be optimistic of a result but this is a different season and this tie is unique.

The intensity and overwhelming passion of the derby has decimated our possibilities for this weekend’s game. Foggia is injured and both Matuzalem and Brocchi are suspended which gives Delio a midfield headache. The apparent solution is to introduce Mauri back into the side and move Lichtsteiner to right midfield with Ledesma and Dabo in the centre of the park. De Silvestri will probably slot into the right back role as a result and considering our defense has remained mostly unchanged recently, Rossi is likely to give Radu and Diakite’ starts in order to rest Kolarov and Siviglia. Mobido should be partnered in the centre by Rozehnal. Pandev and Zarate look set to feature again in attack but Goran seriously needs a rest and I wish Delio would just accept this. There is no reason to not leave out the Macedonian every once in a while when you have Rocchi on the bench. Here is the probable line-up:

Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera, Radu, Rozehnal, Diakite’, De Silvestri, Mauri, Ledesma, Dabo, Lichtsteiner, Pandev, Zarate.

Genoa will field the strongest line-up available to them but they have multiple absentees which could give us a slight advantage. They have one goal and one goal only; fourth spot and there’s no doubt in my mind that they are going to be up to the challenge today. I think if we want to win, we need to grab and early goal or even two like we did against Rioma. They will be full of nervous energy, the onus is on us to turn that nervousness into a negative energy. If we can worry and frighten them, we have every chance but if we gift them a goal or two, we could be steamrolled. It’s a challenge for both sides and I hope we deliver because a win would be the perfect boost for Juve. Forza Lazio!

Previous Encounter: Lazio 1-1 Genoa (Milito, 69, Dabo, 80)

Pandev is bollixed. Give him a rest, Delio. Also, now that Siviglia is out of the team, lets leave him out.

I always thought that Cribari and Diakite should have been our main starting center backs. We still haven’t had much consistancy with our backline.

The announcer is driving me crazy though. Where is he from? He’s incapable of speaking in coherent sentences. His words come out in bursts, almost grunts–like a guy straining on the toilet.

    yesssssssssssssssssssssss

Well done, a bigger margin would not have been unfair. I liked the D that started the game today. Btw can the Italian media be any intellectually lazier? Lazio beat Genoa today, not Genoa beat Genoa – wwe played superbly. Grazie ragazzi!

FORZA LAZIO!!! Great result. Good goal. Sturdier defense. Good midfield. Great attackers. This is starting to look promising. Delio got the back-line spot on, and should stick with this combination. I liked Lichti on the right wing, but then again, he plays well all the time. Muslera had a good game, making some great saves. Zarate had a good game, but needed to pass more and score that 1 on 1. Overall though, the team functioned well and the future is looking more positive.

Anybody want to send me player ratings? I saw some of the game (stream problems) but not enough to rate the players. Send them to me at cathal.d.mullan@hotmail.com if you would like to. i trust your analysis better than goal.com who believe Ledesma to be an “attacking winger.”

well we were unlucky not to have scored more and also lucky because genoa had some good chances but if we are to beat juve, who scored against inter, we can’t waste as many chances. three people who wasted a lot were mauri, rocchi and zarate a little bit too. also muslera made some amazing saves but has to work on his kicking the ball because he made some horrible mistakes.

we are in 7th at the moment with a game in hand against the teams we are fighting against for uefa cup spots. if only we could have overcame the weaker sides because we have proven we have what it takes to beat the best in serie a

    Top performance.

My ratings using the Italian-style pagelle:

Muslera: 7 – Two or three top class saves to deny Genoa. One brilliant reflex save early on and an intervention later to deny Sculli (I think). Kicking was laughable though, needs to improve.

De Silvestri: 7 – Very solid. Staked his claim for a starting place, added quality going forward and defending. Even more impressive given his lack of regular football.

Diakite: 6,5 – Decent game from him. A player for the future Went off injured though which was a shame.

Rozehnal: 6,5 – Solid and good in the air as a player of his size should be.

Kolarov: 6,5 – This bloke just gets better and better. Positive is you can tell the defensive side of his game improves by week. Will be a real asset soon. Shaky early but came into

Lichtsteiner: 6,5 – Showed that he can play on the right side of midfield and play well. Helped cover Lollo and beat his opponent Criscito. I actually prefer him there than Brocchi.

Ledesma: 6 – Didn’t think he had a great game but then he tends to get under the radar a bit.

Dabo: 6 – Similar to Ledesma, wasn’t great. Probably due to the fact he hasn’t started for a while. I def prefer Matuzalem there.

Mauri: 5,5 – Thought he didn’t get into the game as much as he should have. Doesn’t have the same drive as Foggia does and isn’t the same Mauri that we used to see. Wasted a couple of chances.

Pandev: 6 – Looks like he could be out for a while. Personally it was a mistake to start him.

Rocchi: 6 – Should have started in place of Pandev, could’ve scored late on. Nearly forced an own goal.

Zarate: 7,5 – If we don’t resign this guy, I’ll be cut. Absolute gun of a player, causes problems, harasses defenders, quick, dangerous. Can be selfish but who can blame him??
