Lazio – Catania

By: cathal | November 1st, 2008

Lazio will do battle with Catania at the Olimpico tomorrow as both sides look to move up the Serie A table.

Only one point and Genoa separates us from Catania in the table. Both sides got off to meteoric starts but both sides have also tailed off in recent weeks. In our case, we failed to come up with the goods against lesser teams whereas Catania just ran into some tough opposition. So how good are Catania then? I think they’re very good and not to be underestimated.

Nevertheless, there is much for us to be optimistic about. For a start, we got a rather large monkey off our back by sneaking a midweek win against Chievo. It wasn’t a fantastic performance but it was a win and that will put our minds at ease. Also, we got a glimpse of Za-Pa-Ro, the notorious trident and it seems a formality that we will get another dose of that this weekend. In fact, this is probably as close as we have got thus far to seeing Delio’s preferred eleven. The midfield is likely to be comprised of Ledesma, Brocchi and Mauri. Cribari and Matuzalem are still absent and Makinwa is out too. Meghni has made the squad but whether he is fit or not is a different matter. In defence, Radu should come in for Kolarov. Foggia looks set to be on the bench. Delio sprung a surprise in Verona but I doubt he will shock many with his tactics tomorrow.

I think it’s fair to say Catania don’t have the most instantly recognisable line up in the world but Zenga’s men are dangerous. They have a strong back line and this is the solid base of their play. In attack, Paolucci and Mascara are always good for a goal and in midfield, they even have their own Ledesma. They are surprising many, Rossi included and they have been a menace away from home; just ask Juventus fans.

Ultimately we should have the strength and ability to edge this tie but Catania are certainly a threat. The Chievo win was less than convincing and we must build on that if we want to overcome Catania. It might not be the best game of football you’ll ever see but fingers crossed that the result will be as good as any. Forza Lazio!

    Wing Play

Contrary to typical Delio Rossi style, I want a Lazio that utilises the wings much more than they have in the last 6-12 mths. They need to do this with a target man like Rocchi expected to start tomorrow.

They need to do this to play well and win against the strong sides. So without out and out wingers in the team, who can do the job? Foggia comes to mind and….Conceicao – sorry, I got carried away there, was dreaming of the perfect winger. Kolarov can do an adequate job I think, and maybe we should have them on the right and left sides respectively.

    COME ON!

    Oh by the way Cathal

You do a great preview – keep up the good work. Jimenez or no Jimenez.

Thanks Omar for your kind words.

I have to say, the issue of the “wings” could be a talking point tomorrow. Every source I have come across is predicting the same formation so I guess that means we should expect that team to line out. Now, what I immediately see with that team is a lack of width.

The battle tomorrow will be between the tridente and the Catania backline I assume. I think both sides will play centrally and that may or may not suit us; it’s difficult to know when Delio seems to have some kind of agenda with wingers. However, he did try to ruffle Chievo feathers with a bit of width and perhaps this is a tactic he will utilise from time to time this season. It would be a good match to opt for that gameplan but the thing is, if we go with the tridente, we can’t accomodate a 4-4-2 formation and thus we can’t utilise width to our advantage.

We will have to rely on Rocchi, Pandev and Zarate to deliver the goods then it seems. It could get messy if Zenga decides to use a bit of width. Perhaps Rossi is aware of that and maybe he feels we have to be cautious of the Catania attack. Who knows. Anyway, I would be highly surprised if one side storms away with the 3 points.

Unfortunately for me, I have to miss the game. I have spent the last week at home but I must return to university tomorrow morning. Therefore I am going to post a few links so all of you can search for streams. I hope you have better luck than I did with Chievo!

Ok, try these and browse about minutes before kick off:

Bet365 are showing the game too I believe. Don’t hold me to that but take a look. The only snag with Bet365 is you have to go through the kind of registration process that drives me insane. However, some of you may find it worthwhile. Good luck with it all folks.

well omar about the wings i think that works in england but in italy not that mauch and if we try as you said then pandev or zarate should go on the bench there is no way of palying yhe trident and plus offensive wingers that tactic it’s too much open plus brocho or dabo are not the best players put we need players like thar needs to do the dirty work and slow the game if it’s needed
it’s a good idea and i was thinking about that but simple it’s not possible it’s to much open and we don’t have the best deffence to cover all that
but anyways i want viktory tomorrow i hope will happen
    FORZA LAZIO

    Thank God for the result.
Zarate was the highlight once again.
Pandev was stupid to get his card, but atleast we will see Rocchi/Zarate next week potentially.

Foggia. What a player! But he seemed to get an injury at the last. Hope he’s ok. I think he showed how pissed off he was at not starting games.

This is an excellent result. Good to see Foggia had an impact.

I am now beginning to think that Delio should rotate Foggia, Pandev, Zarate and Rocchi. Give three out of the four of them a game then leave out one, put in the other and have a cycle. It just makes sense; keep them on their toes, keep them fit and healthy and keep them happy.

Would now be a shame if Foggia is benched in most games. More importantly, I would think he would leave.
