Lazio – Genoa

By: cathal | November 22nd, 2008

Lazio will welcome Genoa to the Olimpico tomorrow as both sides aim to take the spoils and push on towards the top of the table.

There is no doubt about it, this is a massive challenge. Genoa are a classy team with a potent goal threat. Their main striker, Milito, is leading the goalscoring charts and the suspensions to Ledesma and Radu does not make our life any easier. I think both us and Genoa can finish in the Top 6 this season, so I am expecting a highly competitive game. After all, this was a tie we lost last season so we know we are in for a tough match.

It has been quite an eventful week at Lazio. Suspensions, injuries, transfer talk, Champions League ambitions gossip, you name it, we have had it. It seems to me that this is the beginning of a new chapter where there can be no more excuses; there is now a great focus that has been lacking for sometime. Perhaps all this talk is the result of a realisation that we could be screwed this weekend. Siviglia and Kolarov have been struggling with fitness all week but it appears as though both could be ready. goal.com suggests both will be fit but might start on the bench. However lazialita.it is reporting that while Kolarov is almost ready, Siviglia is not as fit yet. These conflicting reports tell me that I should wait until the line-up before I judge who is fit. But this certainly leaves us exposed. If Kolarov and Radu where both to be out then De Silvestri would probably fill in at left back. If Siviglia is absent, then Rossi has two options; Diakité or Cribari. Diakité is the natural stand in for Sebastiano but he lacks experience and could find the dangerous Genoa all too much. However, Cribari is not the natural replacement and he is also in Delio’s bad books so if he got the nod, it would be interesting. We will have to wait and see.

The midfield and attack is just as unclear. Pandev looks set to occupy a spot on the bench. His form has dipped of late and he will also be tired following international duty. That means it is likely that Zarate and Rocchi will spearhead the attack. The biggest uncertainty lies in the midfield. With Pandev’s possible omission, Delio can opt for a 4-4-2 formation or the more familiar 4-3-1-2. Dabo and Brocchi wil sit in the centre of midfield. Meghni should take Mauri’s place in the side and Foggia should also be included. What is unclear is whether Foggia will act as trequartista with Meghni behind on the left or whether Foggia will play on the right wing with Meghni on the left. This is the tactical decision Rossi faces. Hope he gets this one right.

The secret to Genoa’s success this season is a solid defence with a clinical attack. We all know what Milito can do but then there is also the likes of Jankovic and Gasbarroni. The defence is excellent with Criscito and Ferrari two of the standout names. They pretty much have quality all over the field and sufficient depth and there are enough weapons in that side to cause us considerable grief.

All in all, it should be an incredibly tight game. Both teams have star names who can become magical at any moment and this is a recipe for a fantastic match. On paper, we should scrape through with a win but in reality, we have to produce something close to our best if we want the three points. Forza Lazio!

Going to be a tough game. Genoa is a solid team from the keeper out. Hopefully Delio can figure out a midfield that works…

I`m sure in Lazio victory.I watched some recent Genoa games, and only Milito impressed. Also,Gasbarroni is an excellent individual, but with Meghni and Foggia,we can beat them in the midlefield, even without Ledesma.

    Milito is the danger.

We can win this and we should but Genoa did get us at the Olimpico last season and I think they’re a much better side now. So are we, but we have issues to contend with this weekend, such as Ledesma.

It is a chance for the fringe players to step up. I’m not counting my chickens on this game.

As for Pandev, well that’s just ridiculous. It’s one game and he has to compete for a place which he will. He’s a pro, he knows the score.

Another big note about Genoa is the huge disparity this season between their home form and away form. They’ve won every game at home, scoring 15 and conceding 4 in 6 games. Away though, they’ve drawn two and lost four, conceding 10 and only scoring 4 in 6 games. Stark difference, and that’s why my money’s on Lazio for this one.

I noticed that too Alessio, but it means nothing. I would expect them to turn that around soon. Considering we lost to them at the Olimpico last season, I would base nothing on their away form this season.

    BIG NEWS:

Following today’s training session, Rossi has decided to omit Rocchi from tomorrow’s starting line up.

Pandev will now take his place and it seems Tommaso is not happy with the decision. Delio is keen to show that nobody is irreplacable at Lazio these days.

This leaves a big choice to be made: the captain. With Ledesma suspended, Rocchi on the bench and Siviglia injured (seems he will not be fit on time), we will need a new captain. It appears Emilson will be brought back into the squad now. So that’s the latest, will be interesting to see what hapens from here.

I have an essay due tomorrow morning and need to see a few friends. Unfortunately for me, they can only meet as the match is about to begin. I think I will miss the first half at the very least.

So here’s some streaming possibilities in advance.

Adthe are showing the game, so we should have a stream. Check this: http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?matchid=24383&part=sports and select Adthe. If registered with Bet365, you can see the game with them. If Adthe fails to operate via http://www.myp2p.eu, then go to http://www.rojadirecta.com and try all links listed by them.

    A fortunate point.

We missed Ledesma and that added protection he gives to the defence. Didn’t think the defence did a bad job considering. Although, JP should have dealt with that cross. No excuses.

Foggia and Zarate impressed, Pandev and Rocchi depressed. Where do we go from here.

Thought it was interesting that Pandev gave the armband to Dabo and not Tommaso when he came on. Just an observation.

    Delio’s tactics = epic fail.

yeah rocchi didnt even seem to be working hard when he was on and pandev wasnt much beter in the first half. Before the genoa goal was scored i could sort of sense it from where carrizo was standing. We were lucky that Rubinho made a horrific mistake on Dabos shot but we missed a lot of chances in the game…not fun to watch…
Rossi needs to do something with the tactics because from what i saw it still doesnt seem like the midfield and attack are linking up very well. I dont know what the best thing to do would be but a bit of a shuffle in the formation could help.
The penaulty we conceded was a very light challenge,if any, and we were lucky that milito missed that shot as in my opinion it shouldn’t have been…

There is a lot of talk about tactics….and I agree. We didn’t appear to have a good shape or tactical astuteness. As Aldo said, there was no real link-up from midfield into attack.

Anyway, you have to admire the way Genoa played – it was beautiful, and Milito and that guy Padalino or Palladino or whatever (no. 10) was awesome.

I don’t blame Carrizo for the goal – it was a tricky cross, and the goal didn’t come directly from it, rather 2-3 seconds later, from poor marking and an on-fire Milito.

Best players were Lichsteiner and Zarate. Worst players were: Delio Rossi. Sorry, but tactically we were crap.
