Lazio – Juventus + Interview For “The North Curve”

By: cathal | March 2nd, 2009

Lazio will take on Juventus tomorrow in what could be a season defining Coppa Italia semi-final. Both sides will be looking to steal an advantage in the first leg of a two-legged tie. It’s been a while since I have been this excited about a game and I’m sure it is the same for all of you out there.

I have a preview with a difference today. Following the Bologna game, I had a short interview with Michael Di Mascio as part of his weekly audio blogs entitled “The North Curve“. In the interview we analysed last weekend’s game but I also gave my views on tomorrow’s game. You can watch the video below and I’ll let my responses do the talking for what I think of the semi ahead.

Brocchi and Dabo are possible absentees for this game which could cause Rossi to shuffle the pack. As both are defensive midfielders who regularly protect the defence, it is unlikely that Delio will revert back to 4-3-1-2 unless the newly fit Lichtsteiner is moved into a less familiar midfield role. Mauri has also regained fitness so there is a possibility that he will play on the left side of midfield while Foggia receives a transfer to the right. Once again it seems injury and suspension could define our formation.

Zarate is suspended and can’t take part which virtually ensures Pandev and Rocchi of starting the game. Diakite is injured and definitely won’t feature which leaves Cribari, Siviglia and Rozehnal competing for the two defensive slots. Matuzalem is fit to take a central midfield role which is crucial considering our midfield crisis. Carrizo is likely to start in goal ahead of Muslera although I wouldn’t be surprised if a coin toss decides that. Apparently Primavera striker, Kozak has also been tested in case Goran is fatigued. Below is a probable formation, courtesy of lazialita and I reckon this will end up being fairly accurate.

Lazio (4-4-2): Carrizo, Kolarov, Cribari, Siviglia, Lichtsteiner, Mauri, Ledesma, Matuzalem, Foggia, Pandev, Rocchi.

As for Juventus, I have no idea who they will play. It seemed to me at least that they were resting a couple of key players in light of this game but perhaps they had injury troubles I wasn’t aware of. Nevertheless, it might be worth paying the Juventus Offside a little visit over the coming hours. Those guys are usually efficient with their previews and will certainly give you a better insight into the opposition than I can. I am anticipating a highly charged, well fought battle between the two sides and hopefully we can get the result we need. It is Juve, it won’t be easy but we can definitely do it. Forza Lazio!

I have paid a quick visit to the Juventus blog to ask for their thoughts about the game. I heard a rumour that Del Piero and Buffon will be “rested” but I’m hoping they can confirm a few things for us. I think if their stars are left out, it gives us a considerable advantage.

As I said to the guys over there, Juve have born winners on the pitch but I personally see Ranieri as a team building coach more than a winning coach of the Mourinho mould. I think in many ways, they are in the same position as us; it’s one thing building a quality team that can challenge for honours but it is another task to actually win silverware. They may have more quality than us but can Ranieri inspire their youngsters to win? That has to be a niggling issue for them.

    Hey Cathal
Is that a strong Norn Iron accent I hear there? Where are you based? I thought you were a southerner. I was in the North myself for 14 years – studied at Queens.

Gonna miss the match tonight cause I’m at work 5 to midnight. Crazy shift. Too bad.

@ Omar: Technically I am a southener, but really I’m a northener. I live just outside the “Norn Iron” (Northern Ireland) border. Donegal. If you studied in Queen’s, I’m sure you know of it.

@ G: The interview was recorded via MSN essentially so the quality is not outstanding, but it is miles better than I expected. Also, the louder the volume is, the clearer I sound. Can’t do much about the accent though!

Buffon, Del Piero, and Legrottaglie have all been left at home.

I don´t think I´ll be getting a proper preview up, but I´ll try and get some thoughts in.

    I expect this:

Manninger; Grygera, Mellberg, Chiellini, Molinaro; Marchionni, Poulsen, Tiago, Giovinco; Iaquinta, Trez

Maybe swap Amauri in there. We could use Nedved´s experience and he was rested Saturday so he might start in place of Giovinco.

I can see a Lazio victory tomorrow. I would expect Juve to rest a few first team players, but it will still be difficult. Should be an interesting match.

    Thanks Alessio for the information.

Regarding Lotito, let’s not panic. I’ll try and find all the information I can and gather it up for a post tomorrow. There will be appeals and legal stuff I know little about so nothing is final as of now.

Nevertheless, how will this effect the team?

Unlucky to concede the way we did, however, Juve may have had a valid goal called offside.

0-1 HT. Some players are not at the races but there is another half and another match to go. Chins up folks.

congrats to lazio. i thought it was going to be around 3 or 4 nil at half time, but fair play to the team for a great second half. napoli should be an easy tie if we play like we did in the 2nd half
