Lazio – Juventus

By: cathal | September 11th, 2009

It has been a long two weeks and it seems like years since the mercato closed and all the moaning and groaning began. In a way, there was a danger of tearing the backside out of this game before kick-off. This will be the real test, the true indicator of where we are or perhaps where we are not and above all, it gives us the opportunity to concentrate on the game yet again. The build-up to the game has been overshadowed by injuries and I have avoided talking about it for as long as I possibly could. Why? Mainly because most of it was simply the media guessing.

As far as I could see, Zarate was never in doubt. He picked up a knock but there were varying reports on what his injury actually was. This morning, he was declared fit to play having passed a medical but the latest news is that he will not feature. Confused? So am I. This is a blow but it appears Ballardini doesn’t want to take the risk. I guess that is understandable but this is Juventus and if you want to win against the big guns, risks are necessary. However, with so many injury doubts, I guess you have to calculate the risk and pick and choose accordingly.

Siviglia and Diakite’ may just be fit enough to start tomorrow but if they fail to make it, we have the successful duo from Zaragoza, Radu and Stendardo waiting for their chance. Cribari is suspended. In midfield, Baronio has been a doubt but it looks like he will play with Mauri and Dabo flanking him. Brocchi is injured. Matuzalem should be the man linking midfield to attack while Foggia partners Cruz in attack. Rocchi is out I believe. This is the formation I expect, the truth is, nobody really knows what is happening but I’m going to stick my neck on the line with this team:

Lazio (4-3-1-2): Muslera, Kolarov, Siviglia, Diakite’, Lichtsteiner, Mauri, Baronio, Dabo, Matuzalem, Foggia, Cruz.

As for Juve, everybody is talking about one man and one man only; Diego. The strategy from our perspective is similar to the one we deployed against Inter; stay compact, take a few gambles here and there and hit them on the counter with pace. With an under par line-up, this will be difficult and even when you take the Brazilian out of the equation, we have a quality defence to break down and top strikers to stop. As Davide said in his press conference, that is easier said than done but I’m confident we can grab something from the game. They will have many tired internationals and you hope that will play into our hands as the match wears on. Forza Lazio!

Stendardo has a history of being a troublemaker and because of that, it seems our coach is reluctant to rely on him. He may get his chance tomorrow although the coach hinted that he wouldn’t.

I do like him as a player, I think he is potentially one of the best in Serie A in terms of physicality.

Sam: I hope your ‘looking forward to…juventus coming out on top’ is completely confounded and the old lady gets older and ages from the experience. Are you another Juve fan ‘gracing’ our forum?

I pray we destroy Juve, and if not, then just beat them. No doubt they and inter are the top two teams, and they love playing in the olimpico.

FORZA those beautiful blues. I will be watching. And i’m getting that jittery feeling already.

Oh sorry, I missed the brackets comment. You are a fan of the withering lady (unfortunately just not doing it on the pitch, though they were withering away in serie B not so long ago – oh the joys).

I hope you suffer tonight. I really do. No offence.

    Sorry Sam,

When i see the black and white stripes, its like a red rag to a bull.

Its nothing personal. My brother is a juve fan.
    That’s why i disowned him.
    Only kidding.

I am a huge Lazio fan but find it hard to get news in Canada. Can someone please explain to me why Rocchi is seeing such limited time?

Mastro: Rocchi isn’t seeing limited time at all. He has played most games, starting most also. He is in good form at the moment and I hope he starts.

    Ooooh the jitters.

Stendardo is a quality player and it surprises me that he has such issues in Rome, because at Juve he was a model professional. He didn’t play as much as he should have, but never complained about it.

This should be a good game…forza Juve!!

Rocchi is injured guys. It’s that simple. He is not part of the squad today as far as I am aware.

Look at our squadre: it is looking thinnish upfront.
    Lacking Rocchi and Zarate.
Maybe Inzaghi boy will do it for us, or Baronio from a free-kick!
    Forza the ladz.

Hello Lazio Offside, I’ve never posted here before, but just watching the Lazio-Juve game. That linesman should be suspended! A clear free kick when Foggia was brought down and then Juve go down the other end and score.. and some terrible offside decisions from him as well.

You guys played well today, very physical and fast, Ballardini has whipped them into good shape. We struggled a lot.

Your defense as a whole played quite well, the midfield didn’t impress me and neither did Cruz, he was locked up all evening. Foggia lit up the game though, every time he was on the ball I was worried. I don’t see why he doesn’t play more, a better dribbler than Zarate.

Firstly, I’d just like to make it clear that I always update the preview with a stream prior to kick-off, just in case some of you haven’t noticed that. It will be the very end words of the preview because a working stream is arguably the most important part :) I try to comment here once I have the stream updated but often it is such a rush that my connection either slows or I just don’t have the time. So, in future, please check the preview; you will find a stream.

Disappointing result. Round-up on the way.

Well,i`m so pissed wright now,we had an excellent game and yet we managed to lose. But this time we can`t blame our defenders, the referee was a Juve player!!!We played without half of our team (Cribari , Rocchi , Zarate , Ledesma,Brocchi and Pandev, but is he our player anymore?) and still we weren`t outplayed by Juventus, the second favourite for the title. The Mauri goal was so regular, and there was a foul on Foggia before the first Juve goal.I just hope this kind of things don`t happen to us again.

Ballardini set up a very good tactic with this team, but i was so surprised(negatively)when he brought in Eliseu. That guy proved that he is not in the best form now.I watched him in Spanish league when he played for Malaga and he played good as a second striker or wing forward, but his position is not in the middle.

The best thing from this match is Kolarov. He proved again that he can do some amazing things when he is inspired. But him and a very good Foggia weren`t enough today to score an allowed goal.Cruz is a good, experienced forward, but he can`t do so much as an only striker, unless he gets some good crosses. With Rocchi or Zarate in the team,i`m sure that Juventus wouldn`t beat us,but that is football.Better luck next time.

    FORZA LAZIO!!!!
