Napoli – Lazio

By: cathal | March 7th, 2009

Lazio face a huge test tomorrow as the squad travels to Napoli to face a side who are in a steep decline. This is a game neither side can afford to lose or even draw if they want to keep their European hopes alive. We will be going there hoping to build on recent form while the opposition aim to halt their descent down the table. For the above reasons it is a crucial tie and it should conjure up an entertaining match.

There’s not much to say about us at the moment. Earlier this week we turned in a schizophrenic performance to back up a couple of professional displays against much inferior teams. However, it is pivotal that we don’t get too carried away with recent results and keep our focus as we look to close the gap on those ahead of us. Ultimately, we have achieved nothing this season and the real challenges are still ahead. Under normal circumstances, a draw tomorrow would suffice but given our UEFA hopes are slowly fading, a win is probably a necessity. Napoli will have similar thoughts in mind.

Lippi, the Italian national coach paid a quick visit to Formello this week to watch the team train and meet with the players. Although Rossi joked that he had come to see Kolarov, there can be no doubt that Foggia was the apple of his eye. In recent weeks, the Neapolitan has cemented a place in the team and you would expect him to feature tomorrow. As a result, Delio will once again have to choose two of the three main forwards; Pandev, Zarate and Rocchi. There are murmurings that Tommaso may not accept a spot on the bench for much longer so it will be interesting to see if Captain Balboa gets his chance from the off tomorrow. Another player linked with a possible departure is Carrizo and with Muslera featuring midweek, one has to consider the possibility that JP won’t get another chance this season. Keeping everyone happy is one of Rossi’s main problems at the minute.

Ledesma is irreplaceable and I would expect him to continue his seemingly glorious partnership with Matuzalem tomorrow. Meghni is still out while Mauri shone upon coming off the bench midweek. Dabo is injured also. I think depending on the formation selected by our coach, either Brocchi, Manfredini or Stefano will get the additional midfield place. My money is on Cristian. In defence, Kolarov, Cribari and Siviglia must feature unless Rossi decides one of them needs a break. Defensive security is hugely important for tomorrow so I would hazard a guess that Lichtsteiner will get the nod ahead of De Silvestri. Kozak has been called up rather than Inzaghi and thus I expect Libor to make his debut at some point tomorrow. Below is the line up I expect:

Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera, Kolarov, Cribari, Siviglia, Lichtsteiner, Foggia, Ledesma, Matuzalem, Brocchi, Pandev, Zarate.

Napoli have real problems at the minute. One of their most influential players, Gargano has fractured a bone in his foot which not only puts him out of tomorrow’s game but in all likelihood, the season. There are also rumours of a bust-up between one of Italy’s most talented defenders, Santacroce (who we were linked with in the summer) and Denis (the hidden dangerman of the team). Edy Reja will have to make a big decision about that but it seems as though Zalayeta will partner Lavezzi up front. Of course, Hamsik is their main protagonist and we will need to keep a watchful eye on him as he is troublesome. I think Napoli are there for the taking tomorrow but they are due a win and we will have to hope that we can postpone that result for another week or two. Forget the form tomorrow, that will count for nothing, this will come down to a battle of heart. Forza Lazio!

Previous Encounter: Lazio 0-1 Napoli (Siviglia o.g. 61)
Last Season: Napoli 2-2 Lazio (Hamsik, 5, 94, Ledesma, 25, Pandev, 34)

I didn’t get to see the entire game, only parts of the second half. But after watching the highlights I think Lazio deserved the win. For the most was the teams seemed evenly matched, Lazio the one who put away the chances. Muslera certainly deserved a result for the effort he put in.

    Highlights here.

Great result… as we have now moved up to 7th on the ladder, does this mean that we now occupy the last of the allocated UEFA cup spots??

Out of curiosity when/why did Carrizzo lose his starting spot? And to Muslera, of all people!

Carrizo didn’t do anything wrong in particular but he did let in some questionable goals and lacked communication with the defence, running out of goal to clear balls the defence had under control.

JP was given a “rest” but Muslera stood in and has been somewhat of a phenomenon since. For this reason, Rossi has yet to drop him.

Muslera has been a BEAST this season… I actually can say that I honestly feel confident when I see him in goals. I do however feel sorry for Carrizo, he went from Hero to Zero in under half a serie A season. I really hope he re-finds the form that earnt him the name of one of the best goal keepers in the world.

I actually dont think Carrizo will stick around, nor do I think we need him to.

Argentina’s no.1 isnt gonna be content to sit on the bench and Muslera is too good to be dropped.

Its a bit disappointing cause obviously he is a lot better than he’s shown and now we’ll see that quality for another club but as long as we make a profit on his transfer and Muslera keeps up the good work, no real reason to complain.

That’s amazing, because whenever I think of Muslera, I think of one of 2007-2008’s flops of the season, particularly that home game against Milan.

He has looked in good form, whenever I saw him recently I just assumed JP was injured.

well done to the team for a great result yesterday, even if it was not the best performance. once again foggia had a great game and looked threatening whenever he had the ball and provided a great assist for the first goal. but i think we are lucky that napoli are terrible at heading, as they wasted at least 3 good chances from the air. but overall, i’m glad there is looking like a second way to reach the europa cup through the league.

The comments on the Carrizo-Muslera debate are interesting.
They are BOTH quality. That, they have already proved.
It is US, who are very fickle with our emotions, expect fellow human beings to be inhumanly infallible, to have endless streaks of top form and then accuse them of being USELESS when they show a kink in the facade we have conjured. Let’s remember – confidence is everything, they have shown they’re worth, and defences make a difference.

Rocchi is a top top player. He can’t take penalties, but he is a top class all-round striker and a credit to the squad, a model professional. WHAT AN IMPACT on Sunday!

I will round-up yesterday’s result and kick off a new poll within the next 24 hours. Unfortunately, I’m under huge pressure to meet imminent deadlines with quite a few things and this is holding me back. I’ll have a post up as soon as possible.

    next poll question perhaps??

Cribari and Siviglia have improved the defence and are def our best CB pairing now.

but I’ve noticed apart from the saves but Muslera shouts more, pumps the players up more, communicates more. Very important for a GK.

I also like muslera, for everything that people have stated. The thing about Carrizo, I never felt confident when he left his goal line. Muslera on the other hand, just oozes confidence when he trys to make a play. Really, I think its just a confidence issue between the two. I mean, doesn’t Carrizo start for Argentina? O_o

Yes, Carrizo is currently Argentina’s number one however after some sloppy performances for us as of late, perhaps he may be dropped in preference to someone who is playing regularly. In saying that, Hat’s off to Muslera who took his chance with both hands when a 2nd chance was given to him… he is getting better and more confident by the game. He is an absoulute beast in between the sticks and we can only hope that he continues to grow in confidence and get better by the game.

It’s tough to pick between the 2 for the number one spot as we are all aware of what Carrizo is capable of and I don’t want to see him leave before we’ve seen the best of him either.

I’m feeling a Poll coming on, Cath!!!!!!
