Palermo – Lazio
By: cathal | May 16th, 2009Normal service is (sort of) resumed as Lazio hit Serie A again to take on a talented Palermo side in a game which means everything to them and practically nothing to us. After winning the Coppa Italia, your guess is as good as mine as to how we approach this one but one thing is certain; we can watch this game knowing we are the only side with a trophy in a cabinet this season.

I can’t give you a predicted line-up for this game as Rossi has admitted he has no idea as yet regarding the team he will put on the field tomorrow. If you understand Italian, then you can see his press conference here. The basics of the conversation is that Carrizo will play tomorrow and most of the Primavera guys will not be called up as they are involved in their own championship. This forces Delio to play some of the guys who featured on Wednesday night and who will play is a decision that will be made tomorrow.

I epect Radu, Diakite’, Cribari, Matuzalem, Mauri and Meghni all to play a part tomorrow as they had no involvement in the big finale and I’m sure the likes of Rocchi, De Silvestri and Del Nero who came off the bench the other night, will get another shot too. Brocchi is suspended. As for Palermo, they’re the number one contenders to Rioma’s occupation of the last remaining Europa League spot so I expect them to come out and look to take advantage of a tired and understrength Lazio. It will be a tough task to get anything from this game but if we do, it will be a welcome surprise. Forza Lazio!
Previous Encounter: Lazio 1-0 Palermo (Rocchi, 66)
Last Season: Palermo 2-2 Lazio (Simplicio, 34, Amauri, 46, Firmani, 58, Tare, 80)
Stream: TBA

With nothing more to play for, I say we throw this game and help Palermo beat Rioma to the last Europa spot.

carrizo really needs to learn about coming out to pick out the ball from crosses etc…i wouldn’t mind seeing the back of him this summer of if he is loaned to a club in serie a next year hopefully he will improve and we can make a profit on his sale

If this game has proved anything to me, that is that Carrizo and Mauri have to be off loaded in the summer.

i am still unsure whether or not rossi should lead us next year. i don’t think managers should be with a team for too long and i don’t know that Rossi has much more to add to us. our summer acquisitions should be based on our manager and what he plans for the next season so i think its important the manager is sorted out as soon as the season is over. hopefully if i new manager will come in they will see what we need to improve in. also i would love to see Matuzalem stay with us past his loan, he has been amazing since hes come back from the long injury spell.

My opinion on Rossi is simple; we can’t sack him now.
Delio was hired to be part of a project and in general, the project has worked perfectly thus far. Yes, last season was poor and this season’s league form has been terrible but we won the Coppa Italia.
Looking at the statements after the game, it seems to me that Delio’s job for the last couple of years was to qualify for Europe. I think a decision was made that the Coppa was the best route into Europe and that is why we have been poor in the league. Our position at the moment is not indicative of how good a team we are.
In order to be a big club again, we need money and Europe brings money. Not 7th or 8th in the league; Europe. In the eyes of our club, winning the Coppa is better than coming 5th and unless we believe we should be in the Top 4 at this early stage of our development, Delio is doing a fantastic job.
I too, like many others, was worried that Rossi and Lazio was becoming a stale partnership. However, we now have a winning coach who has a great relationship with key players and in my opinion, sacking him could be a huge step backwards. Bringing in someone like Allegri could bring us forwards but that would be a huge risk in my opinion. What Delio has proved this season is that he, and this team, can beat anyone and beat winners. It could be foolish to change that formula right now…

Well said Cath. If you look at the beginning of the season and read between the lines, Lazio’s objective this year was to always win the Coppa Italia and qualify for Europe next term – something that has now been achieved hence why Delio has taken his foot off the gas so to speak.
I thought that it was fantastic that he introduced 2 young youth team players yesterday whom I’m sure will be part of our plans for next season. Expect to see more of these 2 in the coming 2 weeks of fixtures.
