Supercoppa Italiana 2009: Inter – Lazio

By: cathal | August 7th, 2009

I never thought the day would come. After months of anticipation, months of agonising, months of waiting, months of speculation and most of all, months of boredom, the curtain-raiser to the Italian season is now upon us and ready to be lifted in style, in Beijing. In my head, I’ve been writing previews on non-existent games for weeks and now that the time has finally come, I am short on words.

I will draw your attention to an observation I made earlier today. Almost a year ago, I began writing on this blog and one of my first posts was last year’s season opener; a Coppa Italia fixture against lowly Benevento. I know it’s all too easy to say this now but that day, I was confident that it would be the first step on a remarkable journey and that we would go a ‘couple of steps further’ than the previous year. The potential in the side was clear back then but in stark contrast to this time last year, we are in a period of significant doubt and hours away from another piece of silverware or a natural disappointment. The preparation has been poor; I’m not sure if anyone can deny that but I do believe, in time, more progress will be made under the new regime. A victory tomorrow would be the ultimate boost.

As for the starting line-up, your guess is as good as mine or Lalaziosiamonoi’s for that matter but here’s the squad they predict:

Lazio (4-4-2): Muslera, Kolarov, Siviglia, Diakite’, Lichtsteiner, Dabo, Matuzalem, Brocchi, Foggia, Zarate, Rocchi.

I think what we should look to do this season is play Zarate to the left and Foggia to the right of the main frontman. I can’t see how the players listed above can play in a 4-4-2 and I don’t believe Pasquale will play as a trequartista. I think Dabo, Matuzalem and Brocchi form a formidable and balanced trio in midfield. This would put pressure on Kolarov and Lichtsteiner but I’d rather we did that then let Eto’o and Milito terrorise our central defenders. I expect Diakite’ will play but I’m not convinced we will see Siviglia alongside him. The tactic we deploy is key; in the absence of Ledesma I do believe a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 is our best option but let’s see what Ballardini opts for. As for Inter, I am not the person to ask, I barely know what to expect from ourselves tomorrow but I believe a preview is on the way over on their Offside so if you’re Inter-ested (terrible, I know), then pop over.

I’ll post a stream in the comments box as soon as I find one but believe it or not, I may be forced into missing the game. That is a gutwrenching prospect but luckily Franco will be on hand to fill you in with a review of the game once the result is known. All that remains for me to say is Forza Lazio! and may the best team win tomorrow. Which will be us I hope. Forza Lazio!

Ciao guys. Excellent result, how good we were though is up for discussion. Yes, I did manage to catch the game via a few dodgy streams.

In my opinion, Inter were no better than us. In the first half, we had them in our pockets and then we took Baronio off and they suddenly started to pick up the ball in and around the box. There is a need for a regista against the new Inter because I feel you need someone there to cut off any ball that is played to the feet of Eto’o or Milito. Baronio did that well but it killed our creativity. For a fifteen minute period, we were being dominated slightly but Muslera kept us in it and we grab 2 goals which essentially came from counter-attacks. The next 25 minutes was about defence but the game was virtually over.

Perhaps we didn’t have much possession but I don’t feel Inter did enough to merit winning the game. I don’t think we did either as such but we did take our chances; they couldn’t take theirs. As a result, Supercoppa Italiana 2009 is ours. Forza Lazio!!!

We weren’t great, certainly not in terms of ball retention, but who cares, in a final the last thing that matters is the performance, the first is the result and boy we got that. I caught the whole game on TV and we were decent in the first half and less so in the second despite two great (for entirely different reasons) goals but Inter never made us look stupid apart from one nutmeg Brocchi took and the mistakes of Siviglia (and one from Diakite).

Yes, we definitely need a couple of new players, but maybe Lotito will gift us one after this win.

Great team win. Lots of sacrifice by the back three to cover for the completely outclassed Siviglia. Ballardini hopefully must have seen what all the rest of us laziale saw. Siviglia has got to go into retirement! Cribari and Stendardo (I know what you are thinking…) are better than him. I truly hope help is on the way now that Rozenhal is off to Germany. Diakite can become a decent central defender however only when he has a confident partner beside him. As for the formation, lets hope this was still a testing ground. It is evident we need that spark in the midfield that can spring the attack quickly. I believe Matuzalem can possibly replace Ledesma (if he goes) but we desperately need better than Baronio in there. As for the strikers, I think Zarate has to play on the left and be able to use his creativity and 1st step to penetrate the box before unleashing his now trademark right foot cannons. This still could give Foggia the option of playing in the left midfield role. In this formation we have at leats three quality players who love to play ball to feet (Matuzalem, Zarate & Foggia) taht will allow us to unlock many defenses this coming year. Fantastic start to the year. Forza Lazio!!

I have to say after watching this game a couple things stood out to me.. Dabo and Siviglia are looking pretty bad out there.. The Eto’o goal came after Dabo foolishly tried to control a dangerous ball when he should have cleared it..
I think it should be clear that in order to do well this season we’re gonna have to “deal” with these two players.. Would have liked to see Foggia or Eliseu out there.. Let’s see what the season has in store for us..

Dabo only came on because Baronio hasn’t the legs. Keep in mind, Baronio is way behind with regards to pre-season (due to play-offs with Brescia) and if we bring in another midfielder, Dabo won’t be a problem. It’s the same with Siviglia if we get another centre-back.

    Waheeeeey
    Great stuff
Watched the whole game live on ART Sport 4.
Oooooh we were shaky big time for lots of the second half.
I am a big fan of Baronio and was delighted to see him start. He seems to be a nemesis for Inter when playing for Lazio – last time i recall him playing was in 1998 or so when we destroyed Inter 5-3 away!

Anyway, that 2nd goal was a beauty – Mauri and Rocchi combined beautifully. And what a solid display by Muslera.

Hahahahahah. Mourinho eat your friggin humble pie buddy. Hahahaha.

Mauri’s pass was a flash of brilliance in an otherwise disappointing game but that will give him confidence and yes, you could be right.

I personally thought Tommaso was finished, I still have doubts but he looked very sharp today and it when he chested that pass, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

What we have now is a team that is nicely setup for a tactician to carve out results. Ballardini could make a huge difference.
