2 points thrown away.
By: salvatore | October 5th, 2008When you’re coming off a stretch of games against Sampdoria, Milan, Fiorentina and Torino (on the road), and you’ve picked up 9 of 12 points, there’s no way in hell you can be happy with a draw against Lecce. Especially when you’re playing at home.

The season may be long, but if I’ve learned anything as a calcio fan, it’s that every single point counts, and we should not be dropping any against Lecce. No way no how. These are games that need to be won.
That said, we should be careful about being too dramatic. This wasn’t a loss after all, and if you were paying attention, you would have noticed a bevy of scoring chances wasted, as well as a never say die spirit that I think really showed how much character and determination the team has. Put simply, the scoreline flatters Lecce tremendously, because had Pandev, Ledesma, Mauri, and Foggia converted some of their great opportunities, it could (and probably should) have been a rout. Sometimes, things just don’t go your way.
This isn’t to say there wasn’t anything troubling from this performance, as the defense and goalkeeping on Lecce’s goal left a whole lot to be desired. It’s true that the header clearly caught Carrizo by surprise, but the half-assed swipe he took at the ball was embarrassing, and definitely not his finest work. I watched him play a lot last year in Argentina, so I know how good he is. But with gaffe’s like this (and, some would say, in the Milan game), I can see why some Biancoceleste fans are wondering just what kind of keeper we have. Six games, I think, is pretty early to start criticizing a player still adjusting to a new league and country, but it’s obvious that he can’t keep getting beaten by crap like this…especially when Lecce provided little in the way of offense before or after that fluke.
Of course, Carrizo can’t do everything alone either, and Rozehnal and Siviglia should be taken to task for being out of position, and allowing Tiribocchi to even get a head on the ball. I’ve said in the past that I thought Radu and Rozehnal would be our strongest central pairing, but now I’m wondering if Cribari doesn’t offer a touch more security. Hard to say if he’s a better bet than the Czech international, but I’m curious what Delio will decide next game. I’d also like to see Mourad Meghni get a start over Mauri, but who knows if Rossi will make that change, especially since the overall team performance was for the most part, solid.
If a mistake was made on Saturday though, it was probably in waiting so long to bring Inzaghi on. For most of the game Lecce forced the Aquile out on the wings, crowding the middle and jamming up to seven men in the box. Free flowing, pass-happy football was not going to be on the cards. Basically, the game was calling out for either a big target man (which we don’t have) or an out and out poacher of the highest order (which we do, even if he’s rusty). Inzaghino’s name was written all over this affair, and he didn’t waste much time tying it up. Delio might have to get Simone more involved, at least until Balboa comes back.
Anyway, still sharing top spot…let’s get back to winning ways in Bologna. Forza Lazio.

Wow, that last pic! You’ve got to love Rossi!
I watched this game on ESPN and one of the commentators made a point that I thought was quite apt about Lazio. I never thought I would say this as a negative, but Lazio have too many creative players in the team. There’s Ledesma in the center, and Zarate, Pandev, Mauri and Foggia all keep moving around and switching places, going out wide and trying to create chances. However, there’s usually no one in the middle to finish off what they create. They would have to finish the goals off themselves. A more immobile striker might be ideal for this Lazio team, as you said and I agree, had Inzaghi been on for longer Lazio might have had the 3 points. But you’re still top and playing good football. Keep it up, and fuck Roma!
Finally, you said “The season may be long, but if I’ve learned anything as a calcio fan, it’s that every single point counts, and we should not be dropping any against Lecce. No way no how. These are games that need to be won.” Would you kindly tell some of those daft Juve fans the same thing who don’t seem to be bothered by the fact that we’ve dropped points against Catania and a very beatable (as you lot would know) Sampdoria? Every point counts and sooner or later the dropped points will start to matter. Those Roma clowns know about that all too well.

Thanks guys for the support.
Nnahoj, just to elaborate on the point you made, I feel there is no point being “creative” against a side who place all eleven men behind the ball. What is needed is a finisher. The one natural finisher we have is Inzaghi. Now, for me, Inzaghi should have been on at half time and I can provide a few reasons for this opinion. Firstly, Beretta knew what team we would field and thus he planned accordingly. Secondly, we are mentally fatigued now, too many games in recent weeks is affecting concentration. Lastly, Inzaghi was just suited to this game.
I don’t care about those who say Inzaghi hasn’t scored in ages, hasn’t been a squad member, is past it, has nothing left to give etc. The fact is, Inzaghi has been loyal, was denied opportunities, won a Scudetto, can score goals at will etc. If people don’t belive me on this one, I just tell them to look at the older brother. We do lack some aerial threat but I don’t think we lack the finisher as I believe Inzaghi’s last two cameos ensures that he is now back and part of the squad.
Now to Bologna. Tough, tough game.

It was an interesting bit watching Inzaghi running backwards after his goal shouting “bastardo, bastardo” towards Rossi…

The funny thing about all this is that we have Zarate now partly because we passed on Bianchi, who is a target man/finisher/poacher type. Would anyone reverse that? I wouldn’t.
I don’t know if we have too much creativity Nnahoj, but I think Cathal is right when he says fatigue and loss of concentration were a part of saturday’s draw too. The team needs to be rotated more.

KJ lazio inter and udinese are first. It was dissappointing watching that match how lecce just survived on there lucky goal which was quite annoying. they played teh rest of teh game with so many players behind the ball it was so annoying we just couldn’t get through all of them. lazio need to mix things up though i think to try surprise against bologna. we cant keep playing the same predictable game. rocchi will obviously change stuff up and add more options for unpredictability but we have many fast young creative players we delio should be able to come up with some new stuff before the next game especially seing as there is the internatoinal break.

With a victory over Bologna,we can forget about this draw…But it`s not gonna be easy because Bologna is not such a bad squad. This season Lazio is gonna be an excellent away team, with all the strikers,in my opinion. That could bring us the Champions League.

Interesting points. I agree about Inzaghi – a classic goal poacher suited to the game against Lecce. Not sure that we have many ‘creative’ midfielders – ledesma isn’t that creative (eg. compare with fiore, liverani, veron)- his strength is as a connector between defence and attack as well as his stamina- and also he’s a fairly solid tackler (he would be ‘midfielder’ in the game of football manager).
I for one see the point against Lecce as one gained and not 2 dropped. A very positive start to the campaign and I am particularly pleased with the increased involvement of Foggia and Meghni.
Come on the Ladz.
