Down But Not Out
By: cathal | March 22nd, 2009This is the toughest post I have had to write since I took control of this blog, solely because I am utterly speechless and don’t know what to say. There is no disgrace in losing away to Catania. However, the wheels look to be falling off the wagon if they haven’t already and it’s difficult to see how we are going to get them back on again.

I’m not doing player ratings this week. For one, I missed parts of the game as I also had one eye on another sport (let’s just say, yesterday was the greatest day of sport in the history of my country but the Lazio game took the shine off it). Secondly, it was a performance I found impossible to rate. Nobody excelled, nobody was absolutely disastrous, it was just a poor outing from our squad. I would love to say we are going to turn this around very soon but I am aware that I could be lying to you if I did.
The only positive I can give you is that the season is still there to be salvaged. We still have that Coppa tie, the one game that will make or break our season, the one game that we are anxiously anticipating. In addition to that, we are only five points off the UEFA Cup spot. That is quite remarkable and hopefully that will make the boys raise their heads and come out fighting in the next game.

Once again, we have to forget this ever happened and carry on. No point dwelling in the past or the present, we can’t change history. Instead, let’s look to the future. Forza Lazio!

Many reports cirulating today regarding Lotito and his apparent fury. He is said to be demanding results from now until the end of the season describing recent performances as unacceptable and promising to show no mercy when it comes to contracts and salaries in the summer. Looks like he has an axe to grind.
Hell hath no fury like Claudio scorned. More on this later.

I’ve been reading what Lotito says.
I think its great. For too long Lotito and Delio have accepted this mediocrity.
I dont want him to go like Zamparini, but at least demand success and create a winning environment rather than one where excuses are made after each performance.

im becoming increasingly unsure about rossi by the match. still starting siviglia when theres obviously something not quite right about his defensive game. not starting zarate in a must win game(Roma having dropped points the night previous) and starting manfredini. his substitutions were quite ineffective also, except for zarates introduction. i myself only saw the last 20 minutes, and all that is not there is effectiveness in the final third. i didnt see 1 threatening move, attack or shot at goal. but however, we must travel to siena and try to get all 3 points. FORZA LAZIO!!!!!

Negatives from the game: Manfredini starting? That is asking for mediocrity. Plus, it’s another match where we started in very indifferent fashion — the goal was inevitable as Catania had all the energy and desire.
Also, this game as much as any this season served to highlight the inherent weakness of our strikers. Neither Rocci or Pandev (or Zarate) are good target men so when the opposing defense gets a lead they are able to slow the attacks enough that it’s very difficult to give them the kind of service that they can excel at. We are not a good team to come from behind.
I think of all the things that could really push us to another level the acquisition of a true world class striker would make all the difference. Our midfield is very good and diverse; our defense is far from perfect but you could do a LOT worse than the under-rated Cribari to pair with Siviglia or, preferably, when he’s healthy, the improving Diakite. And the wingbacks are a solid and diverse group also — Radu is not bad as a spot starter for example, teams can’t always start their best 11. And Muslera has proven to be a very wise buy, albeit a season after the fact!
Overall it’s a very competitive (and surprisingly deep) squad that could take the next step and I think the simplest way to get there would be an upgrade at forward to a guy who can be a target man.
Positive from the match: As opposed to the beginning, the squad showed a lot of heart and played aggressively in their effort to come back. I’ve seen this kind of thing before from them which is why I don’t think a major overhaul of the team is the way to go. If Rossi can get them to play for the full 90 more consistently we’ll be good.
