Two Down, One To Go

By: cathal | April 20th, 2009

Lazio saw off a gutsy Genoa side on Saturday thanks to a stunning goal that was made in Serbia and delivered in Argentina. Kolarov’s exquisite pass was calmly controlled by the nerveless Zarate and dispatched into the bottom left corner. A beautiful goal that secured a beautiful victory and after two sensational back-to-back wins, only one foe remains; Juventus.

If there has been any trend to our play this season then it has undoubtedly been our inconsistency. We always manage to bang a few sublime wins together but then we somehow mess it up with three or four inexplicable performances. As a result, I’m not sure what team will turn up in Turin and for that reason, I can’t predict how things will go. However, one thing is certain; if we play on Wednesday like we did on Saturday, we can look forward to a cup final in front of the Curva Nord.

If we can beat Genoa away, we can beat Juve away and the funny thing is, we don’t have to beat the latter. Hopefully we can keep fatigue at bay for at least another game. Two weeks ago, this season was gone; now it’s alive and kicking wildly but we must be cautious with our enthusiasm, it could all be swept from beneath our feet in one game. We live and die by such margins.

I’ll let the highlights, pictures and reaction do the talking. I’m too excited about the Coppa to fill you in on the Genoa game. To be honest, it’s no longer in the memory. Forza Lazio!

Reaction:

“The injuries were the only negatives. It’s a shame about Pandev, who had to come off with a muscular injury.”

“We hope the injury is not serious, so that we have everyone available for the game in Turin as we want to do well there.”

“I am not milk which expires. We will continue as we are, and then we will see what happens.” Delio Rossi speaking about Goran’s injury (which I have been told will keep him out of Wednesday’s tie) and the possibility of his sacking.

Player Ratings:

I didn’t see all of the game (stream problems) so thank you Cristiano for these.

Muslera7: Two or three top class saves to deny Genoa. One brilliant reflex save early on and an intervention later to deny Sculli (I think). Kicking was laughable though, needs to improve.

De Silvestri - 7: Very solid. Staked his claim for a starting place, added quality going forward and defending. Even more impressive given his lack of regular football.

Diakite6.5: Decent game from him. A player for the future Went off injured though which was a shame.

Rozehnal6.5: Solid and good in the air as a player of his size should be.

Kolarov - 6.5: This bloke just gets better and better. Positive is you can tell the defensive side of his game improves by week. Will be a real asset soon. Shaky early but came into the game.

Lichtsteiner6.5: Showed that he can play on the right side of midfield and play well. Helped cover Lollo and beat his opponent Criscito. I actually prefer him there than Brocchi.

Ledesma6: Didn’t think he had a great game but then he tends to get under the radar a bit.

Dabo6: Similar to Ledesma, wasn’t great. Probably due to the fact he hasn’t started for a while. I def prefer Matuzalem there.

Mauri5.5: Thought he didn’t get into the game as much as he should have. Doesn’t have the same drive as Foggia does and isn’t the same Mauri that we used to see. Wasted a couple of chances.

Pandev6: Looks like he could be out for a while. Personally it was a mistake to start him.

Rocchi6: Should have started in place of Pandev, could’ve scored late on. Nearly forced an own goal.

Zarate7.5: If we don’t re-sign this guy, I’ll be cut. Absolute gun of a player, causes problems, harasses defenders, quick, dangerous. Can be selfish but who can blame him??

In recent weeks, there have been quite a few suggestions from some people on ways to improve the blog. As you probably already know, I’m fairly limited with what I can do here but I’m always looking for ways to make this blog better and maximise it as much as I can.

One of the recurrent themes within your suggestions has been a willingness for a community feel to be established. Here’s what I propose to do.

If there is enough interest, I think the best way to do this is to set up a Facebook group. With this, we can link to other important Lazio sites which should increase our audience and I will also be able to keep you updated on new posts there.

Search my e-mail address: cathal.d.mullan@hotmail.com to find me on Facebook and if I get enough messages/adds, I’ll see about setting up a Lazio offside group. Alternatively, you can just let me know here, in the comments box, if you think it would be a good idea.

I’m also looking into altering how I use the blog for matchdays. I did a LiveBlog for the derby and I enjoyed every minute of it so let me know honestly what do you think about. There are other ways we can incorporate a live discussion so give the LiveBlog a thumbs down if you didn’t like it.

There’s also other areas I’m investigating but I’ll inform you of those when I’m finished researching.

    Thanks,

    Cathal

What a great win on Saturday…I loved seeing De Silvestri and Lich tearing up the right side like that. I think Forest is better in the mid.

If they can get past Juve on Wednesday, the momentum for the rest of the calendar will be great (especially if Zarate’s deal gets finalized in the next two weeks too).

    Sucks about Pandev though.

That`s the only bad from the game, losing Pandev…Kolarov is improving in the defence, and he is becoming very important to the team,i forgot that we have Radu.We should have scored more after the first goal, but with Milito fit it would probably be a different game…It`s a pitty that rioma won, they didn`t deserve it,the 6th place would be more reachable.
Juve is not playing so good at the moment, coppa is their way to save the season, but i`m sure we can make it to the final, with Foggia playing like he knows.

    FORZA LAZIO!!!

I heard that he could be fit for Atalanta on Sunday.

I’ll be doing a post later and I’ll research and discuss that.

Just on the ratings, I was probably harsh on Ledesma but I guess that means he was quietly doing his job, haha.

Pandev has 10 days out, not 10 weeks, so no Juve, no Atalanta, but he should be right for the Inter clash the week after.

I honestly, think we should keep the Lichti, Lollo right side, bring in Foggia on the left to replace Mauri and play this formation in Torino.

    —————–Muslera
    De Silvestri—Siviglia—Rozehnal—Kolarov
    Lichti——-Ledesma—Matuzalem—–Foggia
    ————-Zarate—-Rocchi

    opinions???

Poll and preview to come later today.

Formation? I’d be tempted to leave out Zarate and pack the midfield, save Maurito for later in the game and utilise his pace when Juve get fatigued from that tough game with Inter.

So, midfield would be something like Foggia/Matuzalem/Ledesma/Brocchi/De Silvestri.

I would put Lichti at right back and use his physicality to deal with Nedved while De Silvestri can use his pace to track back from midfield and make runs forward.

At the end of the day, we could all write down the eleven men Rossi is likely to pick which gives Juve a tactical advantage. i would love to think Delio will counter this in some way but I can’t see it happening.

yeah either of them formations is good but i dont think we would be very effective attacking with Foggia/Matuzalem/Ledesma/Brocchi/De Silvestri in midfield. With a game of this importance we need to be able to keep juve away but also we have to make the most of our chances. The 5 man mid might be better at that i guess. hmmm i guess we will have to wait and see. i am just happy if mauri doesnt start

i thought that the formation on saturday was great. i liked lichti in midfield. it will be more efficient when foggia replaces mauri again. the defense was great, but will be further strenghtened by cribari when he returns. we should have enough to advance through to the coppa final. also, i think we should sign zarate permanently and go for ROQUE SANTA CRUZ, who is unhappy and wants to leave Blackburn (im not surprised!!) FORZA LAZIO!!!!

I don’t think playing Foggia on the left is the smartest idea. He doesn’t play as well on that side and if we want to score we’re going to need him where he can perform at his best. I do like the idea of a 5 man midfield but we haven’t used a 5 man mid all season so it could cause confusion. I think sticking with the 4-4-2 is the best option.
