Chaos Theory

The situation in Rome just got even more chaotic in the aftermath of our defeat at home to newly-promoted, Parma. There are a million and one possible explanations as to why this team is currently misfiring but for the majority of fans, the finger is pointing in the direction of the president and the blame lies firmly on his shoulders. We all know why but let’s put the last few months aside and figure exactly what went wrong on Wednesday evening.

First things first, let’s look at the goals. Parma’s opener came from what can only be described as unsportsmanlike play. If you look at the highlights video below, you will realise that even their coach, Guidolin, was furious with the players for continuing the play even though it resulted in a goal. A moment like this changes the dynamic of a game and with only one central defender, it became difficult to defend against. On another day, this doesn’t happen but how often have I been saying this lately? We got an equaliser through a penalty that we might not have got on another day and then Parma take the lead right back with a penalty they might not have got on another day. On another day, Kolarov wouldn’t have got sent off either.

I don’t want to make excuses for the team but the game was virtually decided in the opening half through a combination of tough and potentially harsh decisions. That aside though, we failed to create a single clear-cut chance and while many will rant on about our defence being the suspect area of the team, I find the midfield more culpable. The defence are there to defend, a job they are not doing too well and our attack are there to put away chances but it’s not easy when you have to make your own. The common denominator here is the midfield and they are simply not doing enough. However, it’s hard to hold the players at fault when they are tired, when the likes of Brocchi are on the sidelines and when a player of Ledesma’s calibre is constantly being left out. Ballardini’s hands are tied here; I refuse to deflect the majority of blame onto Lotito and the dissidenti situation as for me, the simple facts of the matter are that those who warm our bench do not have the quality to replace a tired Lichtsteiner or a spent Baronio. It’s either that or they are injured. Right now, the reintegration of the dissidenti would probably solve the situation but it’s a long season with many games left to go and I’m no fan of a quick fix. Nevertheless, it appears to be the only sensible solution with the likes of Matuzalem and Lichtsteiner breaking the internal rules to express their disappointment at the continual non-showing of Goran and Cristian.

On to Palermo we go and we can only hope that we somehow find a way to turn things around. I would like to think that our friends in the Olimpico can spur on our guys but taking into account the tense atmosphere in the capital at present, I wouldn’t hold my breath. A change is as good as a rest and I’m hoping that something special will happen against the Sicilians that will turn our season around. Faint hope, perhaps but it’s still hope. Forza Lazio!

Reaction:

“We didn’t start well.”

“We made a game of it but then the sending off came and made it difficult. Kolarov made a big mistake and you cannot leave the team in this position.”

Parma close the space down well and it’s not easy to deal with this with matches so close together. We are still in a good position in the standings so we want to do well.” - Davide Ballardini

“I noticed a player on the ground and I shouted at my players to kick the ball out of play. I did not want my players to score in this fashion. Zenoni didn’t realise and we scored.

“I exposed myself to the fair play rules a few seasons ago but I trust my players and explained that this should never happen again.”Parma coach, Francesco Guidolin

And why they aren’t sold and get new one. We failed this mercato thats the fact. Lazio is 50% weaker then last year.

Wll Catha, you are echoing what I have been saying all along. I see three key issues that are hurting this team right now:

1: Mercato – we all see the absence of Rozehal now. Was it really worth the 5MM Lotito made on his sale? Lotito gambled and Lazio lost. He gambled that Pandev and Ledesma would be sold at the 11th hour and he could bring in Simplicio and others. He gambled that we could upgrade on defense with Brazilians, Swedes and 2nd tier team Italian players and Lazio lost.
2: Freezing out the dissidents, while the right principle to uphold, has had now a serious counter affect. I believe the team was accepting of Lotito’s freeze policy at the start. However now cracks are starting to show with comments from Lichtsteiner and Matuzalem. Undoubtedly there are others who are thinking the same but will not speak out publicably. The dressing room has high tension that is not conducing to team chemistry. I repeat my long standing position – the message behind the freezing of dissidents has been sent. No more usefulness to be gained from this position. Now I believe the President must do what is good for the team, show leadership and reinstate the players (even if they play last 15 minutes of a game). It will show Lotito cares for the team and is not willing to throw away the season for his principles. Afterall the team is bigger than the president and he should recognize this. The players play to win, not bust their tails and beat their heads in vain.
3: The formation – I believe based upon the talent remaining on the bench and with the dissidents out Bappardini must consider changing from a 4-3-1-2 to a more traditional 4-4-2. The players at his disposal are more adept at this formation. Eliseau(sp?) and Foggia can play regular minutes in wide attacking positions. In this manner, Kolarov and Lichtsteiner do not always have to make overlaping runs to generate offense. Matuzalem, Mauri,Baronio,Brocchi can cover internal midfield roles and Zarate, Cruz, Rocchi, Inzaghi provide the offense.

With the injury list so long and the dissidents frozen out why have Eliseau and Foggia sitting? A 4-4-2 is more compact and gives balance while not sacrificing and burning out key roles filled by singular player(Baronio, Matuzalem).

Palermo will bring another challenge this weekend. If we do not straighten this out soon the problem will grow to almost pandemic proportions. The media, tifosi, player agents will all jump on this issue when in fact we have the ability to at least control some of it by adressing #2 & #3 above. We have enough outside pressure to deal with, why create your own internal pressures as well?

From Belgium….Forza Lazio! Non Mollare Mai!!

    Good comments guys.

Just to leave the dissidenti issue aside for the moment, I don’t think what happened over the summer has weakened this team as much as many think. Obviously it is easy to say Rozehnal is now a loss but did anybody forecast Cribari to be that bad in the last few games, Siviglia to be that injured, Diakite’ to be as incosistent as he has been? We have the numbers, I don’t think in terms of quality we have suffered but for whatever reason, the defence is misfiring yet again.

I appreciate the idea of a 4-4-2 with Eliseu and Foggia but in my opinion, the former is not good enough and neither are any use to us defensively. I believe we adopted the 4-3-1-2 to make us a threat on the counter and tighten up the defence but in the last 2 games that hasn’t worked.

Is Pandev a better option than Zarate, Cruz, Rocchi? Is a guy who is threatening legal action and wants a contractual dissolution of any use to us? I don’t think so. Ledesma on the otherhand, yes, but is Lotito’s hands tied with the Goran’s legal action? These are things nobody knows. However, the dissidenti is not the real problem for me, or this summer’s mercato. In my opinion, it’s the consistent purchasing of mediocre players in the last 5 years. We have too many of them but we can’t sell them if nobody’s interested. Do we want to freeze any more people out? Probably not.

We have to understand that this situation is incredibly, incredibly complex and the ideal solution is probably not feasible. I have listened to all suggestions and have yet to find one that I agree with so if we disagree among ourselves, you can be sure the same is occurring within the confines of the Olimpico.

    To be continued…
