A most frustrating 3 points

By: salvatore | November 2nd, 2008

Holy anti-football Batman, that was an incredibly frustrating game to watch.

Full credit should go to Catania for their strong start this year, but good god in heaven, did they ever play an awful form of defensive footie today. 11 men in their own end behind the ball, barely any shots on target (only one made it to Carrizo), and foul after foul after foul. It was a slow, dire affair, and was really hard to watch without wanting to get up and punch the television screen.

Thankfully, super sub Pasquale Foggia was able to do his usual act of team resuscitation, injecting the Aquile with a jolt of energy upon entry, and then collecting a soft Zarate cross in the box and slotting in the winning goal. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I really think Pasquale should be starting ahead of Mauri. Then again, you can’t fault Delio for wanting to keep him on the bench as a sort of ace in his sleeve. Whenever Pasquale’s been introduced in the second half this season he’s made an immediate impact. Which begs the question, is Foggia’s pace and energy best served as a late game pick-me-up, or as something fresh out the box? Hard to say, but it looks like Rossi seems to prefer a “safe” midfield behind the Za-Pa-Ro trio.

Speaking of which, the trident failed to build on the momentum created against Chievo, and looked out of sync for most of the first half. Of course, given Catania’s tactics, it’s not really fair to blame Za-Pa-Ro. There just wasn’t much space out there. That said, The Zarate Kid was his usual dangerous self, buzzing around the box and creating panic throughout the whole game. If there’s any negative to his performance, it’s that again, he sometimes holds on to the ball longer than he should. A small quibble maybe, but let’s not forget how young he is. He’s still developing, if you can believe that. Also of note was Pandev picking up a really unnecessary yellow card. This was his fifth booking of the year, which means he’s going to be forced to miss the next match. Can you say Balboa-Zarate?

On the defensive end, Radu and Lichsteiner had strong games moving forward, but given the lack of any offensive effort on Catania’s part, it seems a bit hollow crediting fullbacks. Still, it bears repeating how strong a player Lichsteiner is, and how great he’s been for us. Less impressive was the midfield performance of Meghni, who made an appearance in the second half, and seemed slow and indecisive. He did manage a few good through balls, but I don’t think it’s wrong to expect more from Mourad. He’s too talented to be so underwhelming.

All and all, it’s a big sigh of relief getting three points from this kind of defensive struggle. It could have easily ended nil-nil, especially when you consider how so-so our form has been lately. Here’s hoping for a confident display in our next match against Siena. They beat Fiorentina today, so nothing can be taken for granted.

Forza Lazio!

Here are a couple of pics from today’s match:

I’m still looking for the full match highlights, but here’s Foggia’s goal:

At home, we have conceded 2 goals and scored 7.

Away, we have conceded 10 goals and scored 11.

This is an interesting statistic and to be honest, this needs to be fixed. We conceded a lot away from home but that issue has been masked by our high scoring.

We seem to be defensively sound at home which is good but is away games going to come back and haunt us? Teams seem to be going defensive against us at the Olimpico and that is useful.

I would expect Foggia to play as trequartista in Pandev’s absence but who knows. Mauri and Meghni (who I think is not yet fully fit) are also contenders although I expect one of them to slot into midfield unless Matuzalem is back (not sure on his status). With all these midfielders fit, it is difficult to know who Delio feels is the best option. It’s probably pre-season since they were all fit.

Catania is a God-awful team to watch when they play away from home! They brought pretty much nothing to this game, and I was so glad that Lazio pulled out the win at the end. Definitely deserved.

And give Meghni a break; isn’t he coming back from injury?

You’re right, Nnahoj. We should give Meghni some more time…but I thought he really looked out of it today.

The goal celebration of Foggia said it all… About Pandev:I think he knew what he was doing. He didn`t want to miss the game against Roma.

    Meghni:

I am really glad there is a lot of support for Meghni here. It seems we all appreciate that he is very talented, but lacking in confidence. It doesn’t help to have the pressure of being subbed on for most matches and expect to change them when you are a tall, lanky, creative midfielder with some special skills. I think Meghni feels the pressure of that.

I am a big fan of his, and WANT him to do well because I KNOW he can do it. Look at the performance he made last year in the CL against that german outfit – unbelievable.

Summary: he needs to start some matches, be given licence to push up further, encouraged, and to wear black and NOT white boots – they look too big on him.

It seems our wing problem is sorted – Zarate right wing, foggia left wing.

    Go on the LADZ.

How about Dabo instead of Mauri in midfield and Foggia could join the tridente up front?

to be honest I think the major problem we have is the fact that all our strikers would rather score themselves than make the easy pass.. we saw that with inzaghi against chievo.. zarate on his breakaway vs catania.. and many other occasions… they really need to stop being selfish and look for the simple ball…
that being said I really can’t stand the fact that delio keeps playing inzaghi.. he scored that one goal and now has to play every game.. he really shouldn’t get any playing time now that rocchis fit..
lastly.. I think it would be a good idea to offer links to live streams for the games.. anyone know if they’re available?? so frustrating not being able to watch all the games…

Inzaghi hasn’t featured that much but he did what he needed to do which is a bit like Lazio at the minute. We are achieving our goals but at the same time we could and should do better…

With regards to the streams, I post links when I find them on matchdays. Not much else I can do on that front. One can never tell if a link works until the match is on and the game is being shown.

The links will be posted in the “comments” section of the match preview. I have just posted the Lazio – Siena preview now and I will post the links just before the match tomorrow.

Check back then and hopefully you will be able to see the game Sandro.

Please post any other queries under the match preview for the benefit of everyone. Thanks!
