A new striker?

By: salvatore | June 8th, 2008

Lotito opened his fat mouth again yesterday, and it’s opened up some speculation about who it is Lazio is bringing in. What did he say? Basically that the deal for a young, talented foreign striker is more or less done. Who’s he talking about? No one knows.

The first rumor involves Romanian hotshot Nicolae Mitea, who despite being something of a fast, dribbling creative type, is riding the bench at Ajax. Mitea himself has said he’d love to play for Lazio, partly because he’s friends with Radu, but mostly because he loves the city of Rome. So far so good, but the trouble is that he’s primarily a winger, and oh yeah, he’s not aware of any deal. He’s probably not be the guy then.

Just in case though, here’s a youtube comp:

The other option being mentioned (and much more likely) is a 19-year-old Polish striker by the name of Robert Lewandowski. Aside from the fact that he’s dirt cheap (500 grand), I don’t know much about him, but judging from his highlights and what other people have said, he seems to be a goal poacher in the Inzaghi, Vieri mold. Nothing to get really excited about then, but at that price, who cares? If he turns into a good striker, amazing, if not, no big deal.

Here’s his vid (complete with awful Linkin Park soundtrack):

The other bit of news is the reported “Si” from Palacio, which in theory would mean he’s coming to Lazio, but in practice means jack shit. Barcelona have now entered the fray for him, and they’re reportedly offering four million more than Lazio’s offer. So, I wouldn’t hold my breath, no matter what he’s telling reporters.

Hopefully we’ll get some clarification soon.
