Are We Ready For Europe?
By: cathal | January 2nd, 2009Apologies for the blank post I left you with earlier. Something remarkably strange occurred that I can’t explain. Thanks go to MAD and Franco for inspiring this post.
With Lazio aiming to secure a spot in European football next season, would it be realistic for us to expect them to deliver on both fronts? Is there any point in qualifying for Europe given its potential to damage league campaigns? Can we sustain our performance both locally and on the continent?

From a financial perspective, it is absolutely critical that we make Europe. I don’t have the knowledge to provide you with exact figures, but the money we would bring in is significant. It would be more than enough to make a valuable contribution to our club. Not only that, but Europe also attracts players and will help us to keep our stars at the club. In order to ensure that the likes of Pandev, Ledesma and Foggia remain with us, we need to enter the European competitions by whatever means possible. Also, it is much easier to lure the Elanos and Mascheranos of this world with the bait of European football.

However, take a look at Udinese and Sampdoria this season. Both sides are languishing in the lower half of the table (12th and 14th respectively) and both sides have endured a successful UEFA Cup campaign to date. I think it’s fair to say that the demand of European football has taken its toll on their league campaigns. Both teams were comfortably in the Top 7 last season and were challenging Fiorentina and Milan for Champions League spots. Udinese have struggled in the defence area and they have been exposed more frequently as the season has gone on. In my opinion, the injury to Zapata has stopped their defence from functioning on both fronts and that’s where the problem lies. Samp are the same but different. They had a bad start to the season and having to focus on Europe and Serie A has prevented them from progressing up the table. Even Fiorentina only shot up the table once they were eliminated from the Champions League and Rioma have also struggled to find consistency in all competitions. It is also no coincidence that Napoli, who were immediately dumped from the UEFA Cup and Genoa who marginally missed out on qualification are sitting in European spots. Safe to say there is a correlation between European participation and league performance.

Would we suffer the same fate? Would we be able to challenge on both fronts? I think we could survive it or rather we should. In 2006-2007, we were eliminated from the Champions League at the first stage and our season never got going. However, I firmly believe that things would have been different had we not been going through an incredible injury crisis. Also, we have strengthened since then. We now have two competent goalkeepers, four solid centre backs, talented wing backs, a plethora of good quality midfielders and a load of attacking power. The only problem we may have is a lack of superstars in the team. That may halt us from being challengers but if we end up in Europe, I think we have enough about us to achieve our goals in all competitions.

As of 2006/2007…
In the Champions League for participating in the group stage it’s 3 million Euros.
On top of that, each club got 400,000 Euros for each match played, totaling 2.4 mil per club.
Victories earn you 600,000 Euros. Draws, 300,000 Euros. In 2006/2007 the closest to max amount was 3 mil Euros.Okay, so the group stage alone *could* earn your team 3+2.4+3= 8.4 mil Euros.
First knockout stage earns each club 2.2 mil Euros.
Second knockout stage earns each club 2.5 mil Euros.
Four SemiFinalists earn 3 mil each.
Winner (AC Milan) won 7 mil Euros
Runner up won 4 mil.So a decent showing (2nd knockout stage) *could* earn: 8.4+2.2+2.5= 13.5 mil Euros.
How much money would Lazio need to spend to make @15-20 mil euros in 2009… and still reasonably hope to make it back the following year.
In other words, how much depth do you think you think you’ll need/can afford… and would you like a Tumms/Vodka on the rocks while you are staking the next three years of your club’s life on that decision?
Keep in mind the apparent prestige that some people attach to good showings in the Champions League. Even Roma can salvage their season, and have funds to make signings for next year, if they make the 2nd knockout stage this season.
(Winner of the UEFA Cup in 2006-2007 made 6.25 mil all told, near as I can tell)

Very interesting stuff MAD… After seeing those stats I really think that we should be aiming for CL in the 09/10 season as we should be well settled in by then. This season as mentioned by Cathal, UEFA cup would be more of a realistic target.

Thanks MAD for that. It is impossible to tell how great a windfall we would get for entering Europe. There are various other factors to consider such as sponsorship for example.
@ matt: Perhaps I shouldn’t have put that image in, I did consider that it might cause problems. However, I’m sticking to my guns. It’s impossible to cater for the 6 zillion rivalries we have and each individual feelings on them. At the end of the day, for the purpose of the blog I needed an image that represented the preceeding paragraph and the one I selected does the job, even if it’s not ideal. I will bear your concerns in mind for the future selection of images. Thanks and hope I caused no offence.

perhaps the next blog entry could include a small paragraph about why Napoli is so sh*t.
just to balance out, you know?
on the competitiveness, clearing out the dead wood which drains our wage bill will allow us to sign an extra 2-3 quality players that will drastically improve the team I believe.
hopefully by summer they will all be gone.

And do we ever feel like we’re burn this half season?
And do we ever wish to be Ericson’s Season?
we can say that we have.
we can say that we have.
And do we ever feel things here aren’t right?
And do we ever feel the time slip by?
And we can say that we have.
And we can say that we have.So hear this please.
And watch as our heart speeds up endlessly.
And look for the stars as the sun goes down.
Each breath that we take have a thunderous sound.
Everything, everything’s magic.
This summer mercato we’ll prepare for the best and the fastest ride.
And reach out the table and I’ll make it ours.
Everything, everything’s magic.FORZA LAZIO

You may know by now that I am the loudest voice in Lazio forums calling for Delio Rossi to go.
I appricate what he has done for Lazio. I really do. But now more important players are arriving at Lazio and competition for starting 11 (and even more) is growing. And this is where he lacks authority, to bench an important player.
Look at Fiorentina, Pazzini is a great striker, but is so rarely played after Gila`s arrival. Berbatov and Tevez are great, but one of them goes to bench most of the time.
Also, tactical formation and players used to impose that on the field are too bloody confusing even for most experienced calcio journalists.
Without wishing to further continue with my critics, I really think the time has come for Lotito to find a new and more experienced coach, who will impose his authority over the players and use a better suited tactics to those used thus far.
It is not that we are standing very bad on the standings, but with the way Serie A has moved so far and with the team at disposal, we can do much much better.
