Building Our Future

By: cathal | February 19th, 2009

Apologies for no posts in recent days. Once again my internet went loopy and there was nothing I could do. I will round up the news of the last few days now and if anything crops up today, I will have another post for you later.

Much of the speculation nowadays centres on our future plans and much of it is based on a rather premature assumption that Rossi will not be plonking his backside on our bench next season. Lazialita claims and has been claiming for sometime that our “new” manager will be one of three men: Diego Simeone, Walter Mazzarri or Roberto Donadoni. I know who I would prefer.

I personally think Simeone is the natural successor to Delio and I’ve thought this for quite a while. The problem with that belief though is that I never expected this season to go so badly, or for Diego’s career at River Plate to plummet like it did. In my head, I had Simeone on our bench in about 3 years time when Delio had decided to move on and take a challenge. Now, I see two managers you can’t really depend on. Delio is the anti-Diego; Rossi has worked his way up the ranks starting from scratch and proving what he is capable of. Diego, on the other hand, walked into a job after his professional career, proved a point by winning silverware (Delio’s cabinet is rather empty) but went on to spectacularly self-combust last season. If you think Delio is a mystery, Diego would be worse and although I do want to see him strutting around the Olimpico again, I hope he gets some Serie A coaching experience underneath his belt first.

Donadoni would just be the most ridiculous choice ever. He is completely overrated, should never have been manager of Italy and we are not Livorno. I’m not going to increase my stress levels talking about him. Mazzarri would be a more than decent selection. He is currently the manager of Sampdoria and although many are saying Samp are having a bad season, I have to disagree. Last season was an incredible season for them with a squad that is basically rubbish bar Cassano. In addition to that, Walter’s achievements with Reggina were highly impressive and if he can make them a comfortable mid-table side, I reckon he could take us places. Definitely the better of the three men.

Atalanta striker, Sergio Floccari has been linked with us in recent days. Along with Iaquinta, this is one of the guys I would like to see in our attack. He strikes me as one of those late bloomers having relatively little pedigree prior to this season but he could develop Toni-esque levels of ability. He is a player who is surely on the verge of a national call-up and someone who is definitely on the move this summer. However, with the likes of Juventus eyeing him up he could be a difficult catch. Nevertheless, we may be the only team that can guarantee him first-team action and that could be a key selling point when you factor his age into the equation. Would he be happy warming the San Siro bench? Probably not so watch this space on that rumour.

Briefly, Lazio are believed to be working on securing the services of Pandev, Ledesma, Foggia and Zarate for next season. A permanent deal for Matuzalem may also be on the cards.

    Amen to that Cathal.
Managers who have worked themselves up the ranks, with previous serie A experience or big silverware.
None of this ‘i was a great footballer and am therefore a great manager’ nonsense. Not with high calibre clubs like Lazio.

I want Allegri (manager) from Cagliari and Floccari, we need a kind of a heavyweight kind of striker to accompany the more skillfull Zarate or Pandev.

I’ve been calling for Mazzarri for quite some time. No manager gets the best out of their squad in Italy like him.

he’s also a bit of a tosser and that will work well cause Delio is too much of a nice guy.

I love El Cholo and personally want him to coach us successfully at some stage but he isn’t ready and will bomb.

I would personally love to see Simone on our bench however I do not believe that he is ready for Lazio just yet. Maybe start with a small 1st division team in Spain or England and then in 3-4 years time after that experience he will be ready for us.
At the present time, I think if Delio moves on I would like to see Zoff return. I think he is underrated and would love to see him return to our bench. I personally think that he has what it takes to get the best out of our players.
All in all, I would say if the mentioned plans and re-signings go smoothly and come off, We have a bright future ahead of us.

Def. a foreign coach. If we could afford him i’d def. say Bern Scheuster who prev. coached Real Madrid.

Cathal please contact me via my e-mail. I’m interested in setting up an inetrview after one of the upcoming matches for my Lazio Audio Blogs: The North Curve.

Why on earth do you want foreign coaches??

Whether Italian coaches are the best or not is up for debate but the fact remains and always will that Italian coaches are most suited to Italian football.

Some like Zeman and Eriksson who studied from the Italian school of football are exceptions.

I don’t think Schuster fits that category (as if we could afford him).

Yeah agreed, It has to be an Italian coach over a foreign one (minus a few exceptions of course).

Italian or foreign, it doesn’t matter as long as they have Serie A experience.

Many are advocating Simeone because he is laziale and he could help his fellow countrymen like Carrizo, Zarate, Ledesma and also attract other Argentines. Fair dues, but the Argentine contingent will settle in with time, regardless of Diego, laziale means nothing when it comes to successful management and attracting Argentines may not be the ideal thing to do. There are a lot of Italian gems going unnoticed.

I would love to see Diego at Lazio WHEN he has proved he is up to the task. Winning some stuff in Argentina is not the necessary qualifications to lead an ambitious, passionate Serie A side. If Simeone worked at the club as of now and got promoted to manager of the senior side then it would be a different story. That works; look at Guardiola at Barcelona.

Our shortlist (if or when we draw one up) should include the likes of Mazzarri, Giampaolo, Allegri etc. Crialesi’s suitability for the job should also be considered.
