Coppa? Thanks Very Much
By: cathal | April 29th, 2009Last week, I asked you what you valued of greater importance to Lazio; the Coppa Italia or the Europa League and you voted as follows:
Coppa Italia – 65%
Europa League – 35%

Personally, I have to agree with the majority of the voters. At the end of the day, as much as the Europa League is more lucrative financially, nothing quite beats silverware. We may also attract greater players with the Europa League but a trophy is a trophy and I feel that winning the cup will give us a better name. Why? Well, on a global scale, we are still the Italian team with money problems and even within Italy, getting into Europe is not something other clubs will fear. However, by lifting the Coppa Italia, we can establish ourselves as winners and if we can keep some of our top players within our ranks, we have to be feared.
The other argument that could be made is that Europe is a waste of time anyway. I’m not so sure I agree with those voices. Yes, the Europa League will be a “mickey mouse” tournament but that gives us as good a chance as any and the financial loot is always helpful. Best case scenario is to win the cup, get that Europa League place and see how the rest of Europe fares against Zarate, Pandev and co. A Coppa triumph would be the ultimate springboard to success.

This week’s poll is about Rocchi. The question is simple; should Tommaso be sold in the summer? It appears to me as if his legs have gone but he does have a relatively impressive goal tally for the season, especially considering his lack of game time. Is he a worthy captain and bench player or should we sell him for the 10 million euro value he has been attributed by the media? Vote here and as ever, you have until Monday to vote. Forza Lazio!

You realize of course winning the Coppa Italia means you get a ticket into the Europa League, right?

Correct Mitar, the poll was theoretically; simply, which has the greater general value.

i still think a European spot would be more important to luring players to the club then winning the coppa would be

I agree with aldo. We could buy players of a higher standard if we made Europe. We should definitely sell Rocchi, as he is just not as good as previous seasons. We should buy another good striker in case Pandev leaves or has the same fatigue problem as this season. Roque Santa Cruz or Kerlon are my choices of strikers. The tie on Sunday is possible to win, as Inter are a terrible, terrible team. Also, I hear we have just permanently signed Maurito for 22 million euros. I found this on Al-Sadd’s website (dont ask why I was looking that up!!!) That is great news anyway. FORZA LAZIO!!!!

I can’t seem to find confirmation anywhere that an agreement has been made between Lazio and Al Saad for Zarate. I know that terms have been agreed between Lazio, Zarate and Co. but still no answer from the Arabs yet and the deadline was on April 30th… Anyone know anything otherwise??? I hate being kept in the dark.

The Arabs still haven’t responded. Lotito has faxed Lazio’s offer through but they haven’t confirmed.
Deadline is passed but Zarate signing the contract has forced the Arabs’ hand to basically sell him to us.
Sucks but looks like we could be in the dark for a while, but eventually we’ll get him…surely

Reports in Italy says he’s signed. There could be a buy-out clause in the deam but no confirmation as yet although it’s looking more likely.

Yes, Zarate has signed a 5 year deal, that expires on the 30th June 2014, with a 40 million euro buyout clause.
what hasn’t happened is the actual payment of the transfer fee, or al-Sadd selling Zarate to Lazio.
So he’s still not “officially” a Lazio player, although looks like he’s 99% signed.
great news for all.
