Diamond Diakite?
By: cathal | January 14th, 2009Apologies for the lack of posts in recent days. My internet connection went down and it was beyond my control. I will do a couple of extra posts over the weekend to make up.
You may have heard the rumour that Arsenal are apparently chasing our Diakite. English newspaper, The Sun claim that Wenger has tabled a 5.5 million euro bid. However, despite their interest, it is thought we are unlikely to sell.
Unlikely and all it may be but could this be the right time to sell him? Is Mobido one for the future or just your run of the mill defender? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves. It’s easy for us all to sit back and say he is young, talented and has the opportunity to improve but Rossi has to assess the situation. This is a guy who has made a few notable mistakes in the small handful of games he has played. Sure, he is a bit of a beast, strong in the air, great from set-pieces in an attacking sense and he also has some pace to burn but can he actually defend? Well, at 21 years of age he can certainly learn some new skills, that’s for sure.
However, if someone comes along with a bid in excess of 10 million euro, I think it puts us in a difficult position. Personally, I feel his chances could be too limited at Lazio for him to make leaps and bounds. Perhaps we will have to loan him out while he is still young but even then, it’s not guaranteed he will succeed. What if he gets injured at another club or goes to Serie B and becomes acclimatised to that standard or say he goes to a fellow Serie A club but still doesn’t get the games? Diakite is a rough diamond, a real gem if unearthed correctly. The question is, can we make him the best he can be?

Honestly it looks to me like Mobido can defend, I haven’t missed a Lazio game for 5 years now and from Diakite’s performances this season he has taken the ball and intercepted it off of lots of people. He has made a few errors and they have been pretty important but he’s one of those defenders you press pretty far out of the box if no one is on the player with the ball and when he’s done that he hasn’t really faild much, even when he moves out to the wings to defend a cross. I don’t think we should sell him at all, he looks like he has the potential to be worth well over 10 mil in about 2 years.

I reckon in time he could well become a holding midfielder, Vieira style. He has a great range of passing, I’ve noticed that in all the games he has played and his tendency to press further forward than say Rozehnal for example perhaps demonstrates his potential to be a defensive midfielder.
He is incredibly young, he has a good 5-10 years to improve.

I say keep him… He has the potiential to be the next best thing. We really don’t have that much to loose in taking a risk with him.
