Done Deal Diego?
By: cathal | August 15th, 2009Diego Lugano is a Lazio player, apparently. The evidence lies in the reports that he is due to fly into Rome and sign for his new club tomorrow. I’m still going to wait and see if it happens but at the same time, I’m breaking the news.

Let it be known that I am very unsure of Diego. He has many pros and many cons in my opinion. The advantages are obvious; he is a national team captain which demonstrates his leadership qualities and he has had several successful seasons at Fenerbahce which enables him to bring a wealth of European experience to Rome. The disadvantages are maybe less obvious; he has no Serie A experience, he will sign for a huge salary and a signing-on fee nobody will ever know the details of and he has little improvement left in him. Also, he is leaving a club known for their defensive fragility in the Turkish League. A hidden disadvantage is that his arrival will hinder the development of Radu and Diakite’ who will inevitably find less game time. I must admit though, it does beat seeing Siviglia week in, week out.

However, Diego’s game is all about being the commanding presence. He will enforce aerial supremacy upon his opponents, he will get up for corners and bury a few headers and all in all, he will shore up our set-pieces, which has been a problem for many a year. Whether or not he can handle the technical nature of the Italian system remains to be seen. Many have put emphasis on his relationship with Muslera; it is perhaps also worth noting that they’ve never played together competitively. I also have to wonder why a player held in such high esteem and available on a free couldn’t wrangle his way to a Champions League side; that is a slight worry for me.

As you can see, there are many factors that will only be determined on the pitch and while most believe this is a step-up, I’m waiting until he puts on a biancoceleste jersey before I cast my judgement. Forza Lazio!

I cannot wait for confirmation on Monday!! This is the best news so far during our transfer season (outside of course of finalizing the Zarate deal). He will bring some experience to a young and growing defensive back four. I see this as a strength and opportunity for Radu and Diakite to learn from him. This will inevitably lead to Lazio finally saying goodbye to Siviglia (thank goodness!!). I think the central defenders of Lugano,Diakite, Radu and possibly Cribari will impose themselves in the air better than we have seen in several years. Anyone who has seen Muslera come out of his cage for crosses knows that it is a weakness of his that can be minimized via tough defenders.
Now if we can get Ledesma back in the fold the center of the pitch will start to take shape. Our central spine will be composed of (from back to front) Muslera, Lugano & Diakite (Radu), Ledesma (Baronio), Matuzelam (Mauri), Zarate, Rocchi (Cruz). Not bad I must say!!
Forza lazio!! Non Mollare Mai!!

I broke the news because the media was convinced even if I wasn’t. Looks like I may be right:

I’m in a rush but I’ll be back in an hour with an explanation.

Ok, here is my theory:
Diego Lugano’s agent is Mr. Juan Figer. If you don’t know the name, that’s fine but some of you may recognise it. He specialises in bringing South Americans to Turkish clubs, particularly Fenerbahce where he was involved in bringing Alex, Edu Dracena and Lugano to the club. He was also involved in some of the world’s biggest transfers such as Figo to Real Madrid and all of Robinho’s moves.
He is a high calibre agent who demands a big fee; that’s how he makes big bucks. Essentially, Diego would never have been free, in fact, he would have cost millions and the fact that he has signed on for Fenerbahce perhaps goes to show that he and his agent were using Lazio to get more money out of Fenerbahce. Nice strategy, foolish of Lotito to fall for it but “ma vaf…” Lugano; have fun in Turkey.

What are you Cathal, Agatha Cristie. Tare is incompetent fool. This is football and the same guy is agent to 100 of players so don’t think that Lugano stayed in Turkey just because the agent want 100 000$ more. Its up to Luganos choice and he has chosen. Its time someone to take responsibility. First Bengsston now Lugano. Who’s next…

It was Tare who secured the signing of Julio Cruz among many others. It is not his competence I question.
The Bengtsson case was stuffed up by Lotito. He kept the guy waiting for four hours which supposedly put Rasmus off signing for us. But that matter will end up in the courts.
According to Igli, Lugano wasn’t even our primary target.
I don’t think we are talking six-figure sums here Paoletto, I reckon we’re talking seven-figure sums and if it came down to money then that’s not Tare’s fault. Tare negotiates from time to time; failed negotiations shouldn’t be blamed on him in my opinion.

Highly disappointing news but I was half expecting it. What disgusting behavior on the parts of both Lugano and his agent, to play Lazio the way they did. Let’s just hope that what Tare has come out and said (Lazio will be involved in 5-6 transfers this week), is true!
Forza Lazio!
