Felice Anno Nuovo!!!
By: cathal | January 1st, 2009Now that it is 2009, I would like to properly wish you all a Happy New Year! I hope 2009 is kind to you, me and Lazio.
The mercato has now opened and the wheeling and dealing is already in full force. Add Bojinov to our list of transfer targets. According to lazialita.com, negotiations with Manchester City for Elano have lead into negotiations for Valeri. Boj is an excellent striker with bags of potential but he makes Meghni look invincible in fitness terms. I’m not even sure if Valeri has featured in a competitive game in the past 15-18 months. Two major injuries have blighted his career but Lotito may be tempted to bolster the strikeforce. Any move is on the condition that Makinwa departs and a massive wage cut would also be required. It’s an intriguing option but most definitely a massive risk. Click here if you know italian and want to read a bit more about it. It also mentions a few other names, but none you haven’t heard us linked with before (except maybe Fritzler who I know nothing about). Basically, we’re being linked with every Serie A player that has been the subject of previous transfer talk to Lazio and any Argentine with an EU passport.
The Ledesma situation may be resolved soon. It seems a renewal will be discussed and the future of Cristian could well be with Lazio. Personally, I believe he will stay. For me, this has always been a cat and mouse game between Claudio and the agent of Ledesma. I don’t believe Cristian has any intentions of leaving our club and I expect a renewal to come in the summer. However, one can never tell with Lotito and perhaps we should expect the unexpected.
Peruzzi is the latest Lazio legend to comment on our season. He states his belief that Rossi is getting the best he can out of this team and that the criticism he is receiving is absurd. He refers to Zarate as the season’s surprise and said it was unfair to compare Carrizo to the likes of Buffon and his South American counterparts, Doni and Julio Cesar. He mentions that JP also needs a season to acclimatize to Italian football. What do you think of these comments?

Thanks Cathal and all the best to you my friend in 2009… keep up the good work!
I personaly agree with what Peruzzi has said about Carrizo… he needs at least until the end of this season before we see him acclimatise to the Serie A and then I am confident that we will see him at his best.
Another interesting fact that Peruzzi laid out agaist the Delio critisim, is that this year Lazio have more points at this stage of the season then the season where we came 3rd overal (2006/07). Now maybe people should think of that when bagging our Delio!
Forza Lazio!

I think with JP, Angelo is spot on. We waited a season on this guy and with that wait, our expectations increased. That coupled with the fact that he is adjusting to Serie A means we have to be patient. Even in the last few games I am seeing an improvement.
Interesting point there regarding Delio. We went on one hell of a run in season 06-07 but there is the opportunity to do it again and I think we have to make use of it. The next 12 or so games are much easier in relation to our run in. I think if we want a UEFA Cup spot, we need to be sitting in the Top 4 by April or else the task will be tough given the fixtures. If we can get ourselves up there, a Champions League spot will be possible because confidence will be high. Also, if the Scudetto race tightens, come April we might be in the mix. Now I would never talk about winning it, that’s just a dream but if we get the results we should get and maybe a bit more, the big guns might get just a little apprehensive.

Bojinov has started 3 games in 3 years for his club team. Talented guy, but yeah, I wouldn’t touch him.

Valeri was quite fit when he was in Italy IIRC. So taking him on a cut price deal may not be so bad. If he can stay fit he will make Zarate look like Mickey Mouse.
Also with regard JP, Peruzzi makes a lot of sense. Lets have a look at Buffon, when he took over the shirt from Bucci at Parma he blew hot and cold. One day he would keep the team in the game and the next he was nowhere to be seen. His move to Juve wasn’t perfect either, IIRC he took a while to acclimatise to Juve despite being in ‘A for a number of years.
Van der Saar is another one, look at what he did at Juve, they sold him too quickly and now he is Man U’s number one. JP and our number two need time and encouragement, then you will see something.

I agree kds. Muslera against Milan in the Coppa Italia this season was unrecognisable from the kid who let five past him against Milan in Serie A the previous season. I think for South Americans coming to Italia, it’s not so much getting used to the culture, it is more getting used to the differences between the two leagues. Fernando would have learned much of that just from training with the team and with time, JP will become better, I have no doubts.
As for Bojinov, you could look at him and think he’s had his share of bad injuries, he’s young and has recovered well and perhaps he will never have a major injury again in his career. Also, the fact that he has returned after those injuries says something about his mentality.

I think Lazio should sign Bojinov if they have the opportunity. He is young and very talented, even though he has his fitness problems. If he stays fit, he could be a beast, much like he was in his Lecce days.
