Grazie Goran

By: cathal | January 11th, 2009

Lazio managed to scrape past Reggina today thanks to a well-deserved hat-trick from that man Goran. It wasn’t as exciting a game as the 3-2 scoreline may suggest but there is plenty to talk about.

The most encouraging thing we can take from the game is the three points. It was a decent performance but not one that will strike fear into future opponents. Reggina were woeful and but for a poor penalty decision and poor defending on Diakite’s part, they wouldn’t have scored. They had absolutely no cutting edge in their play and the fact they managed to score is worrying.

Although I didn’t particulary agree with Rossi’s gameplan, I have to admit that it was sufficient. Rocchi was relatively lacklustre again but the tridente as a whole played excellently. Pandev’s three goals speaks for itself and Zarate had a fantastic game, he caused Reggina numerous problems and was instrumental in the majority of our attacks. The midfield of Meghni, Ledesma and Dabo was fairly unspectacular but solid. Mourad was not at his best today but he’s now had a run of good performances and certainly looks a better option than Mauri at this moment in time. It will be interesting to see if he keeps his place if and when Methuselah Matuzalem returns from injury.

The defence will cause Delio some concern. Rozehnal was fine but Mobido yet again made a mistake that cost us a goal. I still feel Rossi hasn’t decided on his first choice backline and he will have to do so quickly if this team is to go places. I thought both Radu and De Silvestri had good games but like Diakite, they are young and need time to develop further. The return of Lichsteiner will add some stability and I think it would be wise to reintroduce Cribari or perhaps Siviglia when fit. Perhaps Lotito will now enter the mercato for a defender but to be honest, I think we have capable defenders, it’s just about finding the right balance. Our defence is too fragile with all this chopping and changing.

Nevertheless, three points it is and we can now look forward to a tough encounter with Juve. There’s much to work on if we want to get a result next week but at least we’ve kickstarted the new year with a win. If any of you are fortunate enough to run into Goran this week, please shake his hand on my behalf. Forza Lazio!

I’ll find more in depth highlights when they become available, but for now, here’s the goals with some Guido talk:

I watched same of the Juve-Siena game and for me Juve was quite bad.If we don`t make defencive errors, and if we don`t make fouls closer then 35 metters from Carrizo,we should get a result from the next game.

Juve are due a loss and the fact it didn’t come today (when they did play very poorly from what I’ve heard) gives us a great chance. Confidence could be hit.

Lazio certainly need a new centerback. Must disagree with cathal, as I think the CB position is the weakest in the team atm. Rozehnal doesnt perform miracles and Siviglia is experienced but lacks speed and is a bit clumsy. Cribari also isnt really up to the standard and Diakite is getting good, but still too unexperienced. A class centerback is something Lazio crucially need..

yeah i have to say that zarate was amazing as was pandev. and i didnt think that rozehnal was really good. We definately need a solid center back. For me i would choose cribari to go along with him as i think he is our best defender at the moment but diakite has the potential to be very good. I also thought dabo had a good game but i would have liked to seen foggia introduced earlier. Decent result, didnt reflect the game but we got teh 3 points and thats what matters now.

My opinion on the defence is simple, Rozehnal is a decent defender, Cribari is too although he had a bad season last year. Diakite is young and needs to improve and Siviglia is no longer good enough.

For me, Rozehnal and Cribari need to play regularly. Delio dismissed this combination before giving it a chance and at present, he prefers the mistake-ridden Diakite and Siviglia over Emilson. Goodness knows why.

Rozehnal and Cribari are both 28 or so and could have 4 years of a good partnership. By that stage, Diakite will be more tham ready and Tuia should have made his breakthrough. Perhaps we could get in one world class centreback and let Siviglia go but Rossi will never do that.

I think every position can do with strengthening, we can always improve the squad but I don’t think there’s any position in dire need of reinforcement. Rossi simply has to strike the balance. The reason I say that is I don’t believe even he knows who his best eleven are.

yeah i guess thats true cathal, you make a good point. And i definately agree that siviglia isn’t good enough to play at this level. i guess i would have to agree that rozehnal and cribari would be the best defensive partnership we have at the moment, but i would still like to see diakite get some play time and experience, he must get picked before siviglia. Isn’t Radu capable of playing center back, is he good there???

Many people say that Radu is as competent a centre-back as he is a left-back, in fact some would say he’s better in the middle.

Rossi himself has fixed ideas regarding Stefan. He tends to rotate Kolarov and Radu depending on the gameplan. Kolarov is naturally more attack minded, so home games against weaker opposition is when he plays most. Radu is naturally defensive so he tends to play the away games or the big matches against the Inter’s, Milan’s and Juve’s of this world.

Neither Kolarov or Radu have been having a great season, both men have looked defensively susceptible at times. The fact that Rossi choose to keep Radu at left back through the worst of defensive injury crises would suggest to me that he sees Radu as a left-back and solely a left-back. He is an option for centre, but Rossi shows no signs of moving him there.

As for the Rozehnal-Cribari pairing, Rossi sees them both as left centre-backs and that’s why they don’t play much together. Siviglia and Diakite are considered right centre-backs. Rossi seems to believe that you need one of each in the backline but in my opinion, that hasn’t worked well for us this season. If Rozehnal and Cribari were our regular centre-backs, Diakite would still get his chance when injured. Think about it, if Rossi thinks both Rozehnal and Cribari are left centre-backs then Diakite, as a right centre-back would have no problem stepping in should one of the two get injured.

I would, however, almost guarantee that Rossi will revert to a Rozehnal-Siviglia pairing when Sebastiano is fit again.

True, Siviglia-Rozehnal will be first choice. If we look at the center defence carefully, the fact is that with these 4 guys we will never realistically challenge for the scudetto ever.

thanks cathal for that information it was helpful. Yeah i think that rozehnal-siviglia pair will be back too sadly. It would be interesting to see how radu would pair with one of the others in the center.

On a seperate note is there do you know anything about matuzalem. I thought i read somewhere back a few weeks ago he almost ready to come back. Whats happened? whats he suffering with do you know??? thanks for the help, love reading your blog its quality

I dont think Siviglia is that bad, he’s not great because he has no pace whatsoever, but he is a more intelligent defender than Cribari and Rozehnal IMO.

Cribari and Rozehnal rely on being physical, they are very similar and I think that could be why Delio likes Siviglia in there.

I have just heard that Wenger / Arsenal wants Diakate and has offered Lotito 5 million pounds for him to only be told to come back with a better offer.

Looks like he may be on the move!!
