Il 5 Maggio, 2002.

By: salvatore | March 27th, 2008

Like many other Lazio fans, this Saturday’s tussle with league leaders Inter Buenos Aires brings me back to the last game of the 2002 season, when Inter and Juve went down to the wire for the championship.

For those unfamiliar with what happened, it can be summed up with the image it’s most remembered for, namely Ronaldo in tears:

Ronaldo - Lacrime

Because of the “friendship” that has historically existed between the two team’s fans, and the fact that Lazio sat in sixth-place, success for the Nerazurri seemed ensured. All they had to do was beat us, a team that apparently had nothing left to play for.

Well, they didn’t.

Here’s what happened instead:

Just like on May 5th, 2002, there is the possibility certain Biancoceleste fans will actually cheer against Lazio this weekend, but I’m not going to be one of them. Yes, I’m acutely aware of the fact that a win this Saturday can help give Rioma a Scudetto lifeline. But I don’t care.

There’s still quite a bit of football left to be played, and a Lazio win by no means guarantees a championship to anyone (even, sigh, Rioma).

So…to hell with everyone.

Forza Lazio

I’ll be posting a preview tomorrow.

I have to agree with you sal. I know it’s hard if you live in Rome and have to face giallozozzi all day, but in the grand scheme of things, honour is worth more. I am proud of what Lazio did on that May 5th – we played hard and forced Inter to do the same and in the end, we won. Any true Inter fan, and true sports fan, could only applaud Lazio for not rolling over and letting Inter win. I still have rubentini friends who thank me for that day. I say Forza Lazio, let’s win every game the rest of the season!

btw I find it interesting how that rag lareeomister is already making preemptive excuses. So if Lazio loses to Inter (they beat us 3-0 last time and have 2 losses all year) we must have thrown the game!! My, my, how their impression of our strength wavers. Last week they were going to kick the crap out of us and we were going to serie B. this week we have to beat Inter for them and if we lose, we threw the game! And on top of this, they are assuming they’ll win at Cagliari (which they haven’t for 12-13 years?). What unmitigated gall! Forza Lazio!!!
