Libor!!

By: Pepe | January 19th, 2011

Just a short update for the brothers this evening, but it is an important night tonight.

We bagged the right result this weekend and I’m so glad that Kozák proved me and Tare wrong.

Lazio: Muslera; Lichtsteiner, Dias, Diakité, Scaloni; Brocchi (Gonzalez 77), Ledesma, Hernanes (Foggia 90); Mauri; Floccari (Kozák 77); Zárate

Sampdoria: Curci; Dessena, Volta, Accardi, Ziegler; Koman, Tissone (Poli 68), Palombo, Guberti (Mannini 76); Pazzini, Pozzi (Macheda 71)

Bookings:  Lichtsteiner (L), Kozák (L); Dessena (S), Accardi (S), Pazzini (S)

We dominated the game on Sunday without ever really imposing our passing game on the match but we were playing against a team designed to stifle and we were up against a defence which is equal to ours in terms of goals conceded this season. So negativity is not needed, we got the win and there were positives to boot.

Libor Kozák gave us exactly what we needed, when we needed it. Floccari’s form is a topic for another day but when he wasn’t doing it, Libor stepped up in the way a substitute striker needs to. It remains to be seen whether he’s done enough to keep his status but it’s an encouraging sign for this season. Personally I also felt that Diakité was a beast on Sunday, it was the type of performance I’ve been hoping for from him. What I want from him is consistency; let’s hope he can give it to us.

In other news, Giuseppe Sculli is a Lazio player; he will take the number 77 (7+7=14, his preferred number) and he has cost €3.5m which will paid in two instalments. And yes, he is available tonight.

What’s happening tonight then?

There’s not been the same build-up at all as this is a cup match which means that normally there won’t be first elevens out there. But make no mistake, the pride is at stake and by God some revenge for the last derby would be sweet. So let’s hope to see the wolves leaving la Coppa and let the eagle soar. And judging by the predicted teams there will be strong teams on display tonight.

Team news:

ROMA (4-3-1-2): 27 Julio Sergio; 87 Rosi, 29 N. Burdisso, 5 Mexes, 17 Riise; 16 De Rossi, 30 Simplicio, 20 Perrotta; 94 Menez; 22 Borriello, 9 Vucinic.

Squad:  (32 Doni, 77 Cassetti, 25 G. Burdisso, 4 Juan, 23 Greco, 33 Brighi, 8 Adriano) – Ranieri

Injured: Pizarro

Suspended: Totti

LAZIO (4-3-1-2): 12 Berni; 2 Lichtsteiner, 3 Dias, 20 Biava, 26 Radu; 32 Brocchi, 24 Ledesma, 15 Gonzalez; 8 Hernanes; 18 Kozak, 10 Zarate.

Squad: (1 Bizzarri, 21 Diakitè, 5 Scaloni, 23 Bresciano, 6 Mauri, 22 Floccari, 77 Sculli) – Reja

Injured: Rocchi, Matuzalém, Garrido

Suspended: n/a

I have Italian blood, but unfortunately wasnt born there. I speak it and one day would love to move there.

I know what you mean though, I remember when we were regular top 4 team, and could sign whoever we wanted, unfortunately those days are over (for now) and we have to accept that we are currently not a top 4 side, and cannot draw in the worlds best players.

However, I believe that a team of 11 good, solid players, is better than a team with 1 or 2 superstars.

I maintain that I genuinely believe that we will finish in the top 4 this season, regardless of who we do or do not sign this month.

I know that this is a football blog and maybe not the right place to post this, but after you watch it you’ll be glad I did so. Give this documentary 2,5h of your time, I promise it will open your eyes. Some of you may have guessed it, the third film of the Zeitgeist series is released. You can watch it here

Gonzales played well, gave spark to the right side. Best player was Kozak. A constant thorn in Fiorentina’s side all evening allowing Floccari to pick up many loose, turned over balls high up the pitch. Unfortunately after Floccari’s injury we lost a litle bit of the rythem established between the two big attackers. Sculli came on and although we were not the same, he did make a nice cross to find Kozak free at the back post for the 2nd goal.

Injuries really hurt us tonight. Hope Floccari and Diakite are able to make speedy recoveries as we have Milan mid week.

Great win tonight,1st half was terrible, kozac,Gonzalez, brochhi and stendardo were all good, yet again though ledesma was shit, sooner matuzalem is back the better.I also thought sculli could be a good buy.

Hope to see the Blasi for Foggia exchange occur on Monday. Blasi would give added cover to the mediano position where we have Brocchi in need of a rest. Blasi would also give some competition to Ledesma who has not been himself the past 4-5 games.

Tuesday it looks like we will have to play Sculli & Kozak up front. Dias is back to partner with Biava. In the 1st game against Milan they payed well but they will not forget how Ibra on that one instance found space in between the lines to capitalize.

We will need the best from our defenders to push wide and hold off the Milan wingers. Ditto for Gonzales and Mauri.

    Forza Lazio, Non Mollare Mai!!

if the deal goes through what can we expect from foggia?

Everyone here seems to hate him. Personally I think hes a great player who doesnt get the opportunity to show what he can do, so he comes on for 10 minutes then gets slagged off as being a waste.

Personally, id rather have him than Blasi, but if the deal goes through youll get yourself a talented player who is happy on the wing or in the middle, and when given the chance can create chances for the strikers.

Martin, I fully apppreciate the fact that Fogggia is one of your favourite players. In the right sytem he can be highly effective and entertaining, however with Lazio’s formation there is little room for him. We already have Zarate who plays in the role best suited for Pasqualino. Now with the purchase of Sculli, the writing is on the wall that Foggia is #3 on that list. He has a tough time playing on the wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation as he does not track back to Reja’s satisfaction and looses to many 1v1 challenges.

If we played 4-4-2 he would have a better chance, however even now Gonzales is starting to show what he can do on the wing and bring extra engery to the squad. Overall I like Foggia’s offensive ability but too many other liabilities in our current squad require us to barter (possibly with Napoli) for the overall benefit of the squad.

Hopefully if the swap does go through, Foggia will reignite his career by playing for his hometown team.

I agree with you Anthony, I was only answering the mans question.
I would actually put Foggia above Alvaro Gonzalez in the pecking order, but the left midfield position is Mauris, with Sculli able to play there too, and the trequartista role is Hernanes, or Zarate, and Sculli can play there too.

So you are right, it would be better for his career to move on.

Well status quo for Lazio while everyone else just loaded up for the 2nd half of the season.

Players moved for mere coffee money (ie) Mascara for 1.2M. Many others simply on free loans for the balance of the season.

1: Hope to god that Daikite can recover quicker than in 40 days (prognosis as of today).
2: Hope Radu is fully ready to play every game because as of now Cavanda is gone to Torino.
3: Hope Foggia by staying can refocus on providing some much needed offense.
4: Hope Rocchi comes back against his beloved Brescia and finds his scoring touch.
5: Hope Scaloni, Stendardo and all the subs can play beyond their levels when called upon to replace Lich, Dias, Biava & Radu.
6: Hope Floccari can show Kozak how to hold up the ball.
7: Hope Kozak continues to show his magic touch.
8: Hope Zarate can play with emotion in his feet rather than in his fists.
9: Hope Sculli can make an impact.
10 Hope Hernanes does not start to show the rigors of playing 100 games during 2010-11.
11: Hope Ledesma regains his form.
    12: Hope, we have hope….
