Lotito Speaks
By: cathal | January 7th, 2009Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss, Lotito has given his views on the current mercato, speaking about transfer targets and revealing the “truth” behind the rumours. Whether you choose to believe him or not is entirely up to you but personally I feel he is genuine with his words.
You can go to any of the calcio webstes and you are more than likely to find what he has said. On the possibility of Veron, he has essentially said that he will weigh up the situation and see if it is financially viable. In addition to this, he also said the he opposes ex-Lazio stars return to our club but as Juan Seba is a great player, he will give it consideration. As for Battaglia, he has dismissed those rumours as false. When it came to Manfredini and Makinwa’s proposed switch to Chievo, he kept his cards close to chest and spoke about the depth of our squad in general. I took it as a hint that both could be sold under the correct circumstances. He also stated that Mauri will remain and that no offer from Juventus has been received.
Every website has a different story to tell, some say he has shot down the Veron deal others say he is taking it into consideration. Personally, I feel he has done the latter. However, it does seem likely many of our players will move on now, or at least he hopes they move on. We will have to wait and see what actually happens.
Here’s a few links for you to investigate and you will see what I mean by different accounts of Claudio’s story:

IMO Lotito is very genuine in what he says and I have to say that what he has suggested about not liking the idea of ex players returning – this is correct. Some examples to support this is the dismissal of having Cesar return to the club, not taking up Cragnotti on his offer to assist Lotito with the management of Lazio and he was also never really fund of Di Canio and pretty much got rid of him as soon as he got the opportunity.
In a way I do believe he has the correct attitude as one needs to move forwards and not backwards in life but in saying that, Veron is Veron… Ex player or not – He is a Legend.
Forza Lazio!

I completely agree with you Franco.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Claudio will give Veron consideration. However, I think it would be very naive of us to think that Lotito bringing back Veron would do any good for his reputation with the fans. I am inclined to believe his relationship with the majority of the tifosi is irrepairable at this stage.
Another point to consider. It looks as though Veron has no EU passport and will take up a non-EU spot should he come. What happens if Lotito manages to unearth the next Messi or Zarate over in South America? Would it be wise to miss out on a mega-talent in order to bring back a 33 year-old veteran? Probably not. Claudio has 5-7 months to think about this one. Whatever he decides, I will back him on it because I think his transfer policy of late has been excellent.

Cathal, last year the number of non-EU signings per season was increased from 1 to 2 at the request of a lot of clubs.
So we can get Veron and the hypothetical new talent.

I wasn’t sure if that was the case, I couldn’t remember, but there will be other implications I assume? I mean, there’s still an overall non-EU limit, is there not?
There must be some passport scenario, there always is with Lazio!

I don’t think so, I didn’t hear the interview but there is nothing that I can find on Lotito and the Inzaghi situation.
He did mention that the squad was too big but that was in relation to the possible departures of Manfredini and Makinwa. Perhaps he also meant Inzaghi, but that would just be an assumption.

I don’t think that the Laziale faithful would ever forgive Lotito if he did let him go. If Lotito is smart and wants to try and get back in the good books with the fans he MUST hold on to Zarate, Pendev, Rocchi and De Silvestri – No matter what.
