Napoli – Lazio

By: cathal | November 22nd, 2009

Our boys are in Naples today to take down a fast-improving Napoli side who will be looking to keep their good run going with three points. Considering our league position, we are also likely to throw caution to the wind here and go for the win. It should be an attacking free-flowing game of football so I’m salivating as I type. My fingers and toes are crossed.

rocs

The preview is deliberately late because with a few injury concerns, it was impossible to guess what Ballardini would put out there and if you have tuned out in recent days, this line-up is going to shock you:

Lazio (3-4-2-1): Muslera, Radu, Cribari, Stendardo, Kolarov, Mauri, Baronio, Brocchi, Zarate, Foggia, Cruz.

A huge but necessary risk is being taken as Guglielmo is reintroduced into the side. The midfield looks fragile but if Kolarov bombs up the field to support Zarate and Foggia, it could be lethal. I’m expecting big things from Cruz now too; his fitness has been the primary concern all season and that excuse is beginning to war thin. We need to see him on the scoresheet. All in all, this is a side that has potential but it also looks highly vulnerable. We will need to keep our wits about us.

fogs

Everybody knows the score with the home side’s dangermen but I’ve watched numerous Napoli games this season and while they tend to play some good calcio, finding the back of the net can be a struggle for them. I sense they’ve turned that all important corner with Mazzarri but if we can get stuck in and make our presence felt, we can make things incredibly tough for them. I assume a home win is expected by most but I’m not convinced. Forza Lazio!

Previous Encounter: Napoli 0-2 Lazio (Rocchi 57, 65)
Last Season: As above.

stendardo is playing way better then siviglia.and by the way

We can’t even figure out how to fire a coach right. Here again we have lost the entire international break where we could have had a new bench boss take over for the past 10 days.

I saw nothing against napoli that would give me an impression that we are on the road to recovery. No identity, no midfield play just long balls to our forwads and Mauro hoping that he could beat four mean plus the goalie to steal a goal and victory.

I am not saying we shoudl be like Zamparini in palermo but we have been questioning Ballardini for some time now. We lost the best guy when Mazzari went to napoli but now we will loose another opportunity by sitting on the wings.

Come on Lotito do something to shake the team up!! You are not going to stay with ballardini next year even if he does pull off a minor miracle this year (like qualify for the 2nd round of Europa league and finish mid table in Serie A) so why prolong the agony.

anthony we wont see a change untill the derby. perhaps a heavy loss to bologna can do the job, but it’s very unlikely to happen, the defeat i mean. you are right about international brake it could’ve been a good move for us. oh and delio is with palermo now, good luck to him.

I’m sure most of you have heard the news by now but for those of you who haven’t, Delio Rossi has signed a 2 year contract with Sicilian outfit Palermo :-(

There goes our chance to get him back. Never the less, I wish him all the best – I have alot of respect for the man and it almost seems that when he left Lazio we lost part of our soul.

Delio would never have come back while Lotito is at the club. Lotito is the reason he left.

On another note, Manfredini joins the list of players to get embroiled in legal issues with Lazio. I don’t think Manfredini is good enough to see the park anymore but Lotito created this mess and now all we read about Lazio is tribunals and court cases. Disgraceful.

Di Canio gave an interview to Tutto Napoli website last friday and it’s been a talking point in Rome.

Q: For Lazio a beginning victory in the Supercoppa, then a slow decline and now the tunnel of crisis. What are the reasons for this debacle?

Di Canio: “The Supercoppa was one game and it cannot be considered a meter of appraisal to give perspective on the level. The Lazio in that game has been very lucky, it has never exceeded their half of the field and Inter had far more balls around the goal without scoring any. Moreover after the Supercoppa, the recovery of some players like my good friend Baronio glossed over the absence of Ledesma. Roberto is a valid player but he cannot guarantee the continuity of the Argentine. As for the defense I do not exaggerate if I speak about worn out players, while the attack has quality but also has not been adequately refuled. A player like Brocchi cannot carry the load of all the responsibilities. Then there are too many mezzepunte… the team is incomplete”.

Politics of Lotito: how much will they influence the long term of the biancoceleste?

“As an example consider all the money that the club spends that systematically it loses, like in the cases of Mutarelli and Stendardo. When Lotito speaks himself about economic management of a club, often his advisers omit those which are expenses for his lawyers and who represent serious losses above all when never does not succeed herself to dull it. Models of proper management, without a doubt, are those Udinese and Fiorentina … that with the exception of Lazio can boast nets of competent observatories. An example is Melo, discovered by Corvino, paid 7 million for him, and then sold for 23 million after he had given a fundamental contribution for the attainment of the objective they of the club, like Champions League place. Zarate, instead, a player with certain qualities has been acquired at an excessive figure that usually is spent for a player already asserted and established. Today I don’t think we are a club disposed that the value of the club is not that which Lotito purchased. The data he speaks about with Lazio as the seventh richest Italian club in spite of this season is even more disappointing. Not to mention the many players in the squad who never have been used”.

Here you refer to the “dissidents” Pandev and Ledesma?

“Yes, undoubtedly. I speak also of many young people like Eliseu, never taken into consideration. Lazio today has approximately 40 players and it uses only 16. Estimating the biancoceleste squad, we cannot be rescinding players like Pandev and Ledesma that over the course of these last years have been protagonists of many optimal results obtained by the club. Lazio has incompetent and above all far-sighted leadership. If the tifosi, after the euphoria at the beginning of the season, contest and complain now, they have all the reason to do so … because their “task” is to cheer for the successes of the team and not to come down on technical merits, one way or the other. The guilt should not be with the fans, but the so-called “comunicatori” of the society that at the beginning of the year has — like the clerk of a store — made serious, serious errors of appraisal regards to the players”.

Lotito for many represents however the salvation of the club though… ?

“There is a need to tell the truth about everything. There was a political will to save Lazio and many other important teams that were in difficulty at the time. Lazio with any other entrepreneur would have been aided and eventually exited from this economic crisis. Here I’m speaking not about a President, but someone who leads and manages the direction of the club and it’s profits.”

All good clubs need a legitimate owner/backer/entrepreneur who truly loves the game and can inject both leadership and financial will. The problem in Italy is that far too many of the owners have large egos (for many reasons) and want to play the unofficial General Manager role. This would be fine if they truly new the sport, players, tactics and systems needed to build a squad but there is not one owner who fits this bill.

There are truly few clubs that have a coach/technioal director that runs his own show. In Italy, not even the Great One has complete independance at Inter. The closet that comes quickly to mind is Wenger (Arsenal) and Ferguson (Man Utd.) but even these well respected football experts have ownership involvement. They just know how to manage it better, keep it away from the media and players and channel it in a positive fashion.

Until we come closer to this model, I am afraid that great talents will come and go and the coaching merry-go-round will continue.

I for one would suggest that Lazio re-assess what it wants to be and what type of coach is needed to get there. He is probably not freely out there today so we must wait until the season is over to see who comes available. Unfortuantely we cannot waste the balance of the season either. For this reason we need a caretaker manager who is respected, trusted and will impose some level of discipline and control – the only guy that comes to mind who would be willing to take on this challenge and not worry about his long term career is Dino Zoff. Lazio could do far worse. He could step into the breach for now and become a director next year. Strong football minds like Zoff would be invaluable for our Club long term when players and agents are looking for their next move (vs looking at someone like Tare).

my will to continue watching these matches, which just consist of mauro trying to run past 5 players before losing the ball or sometimes scuffing a shot at the keeper or wide, is wearing thin. i honestly have no hope for this season. i know its early days and while we are 15th we are also only 9 points off 6th place but with this over sized squad which has no depth we can do nothing. No leader, no creation, nothing. I even read that delio said matuz and ledesma are a great pairing. i think if lotito wasn’t such a fool over the summer and hadnt decided to ruin our season (losing de silvestri, pandev and ledesma) we could easily be challenging for champions league spots…

Its simple, if Lazio wants to avoid Serie B, hire Moggi to take out Lotito, Tare and Ballardini without a trace.

Cragnotti and Di Canio will then take over. Hire Zoff as coach with Signori and Mancini as assistants.

Use Moggi secretly to help sack/sell all the rubbish players and find legends at half the price at an offer they cant refuse.

Then we can all go frocio hunting at the A.S.S. Rioma training camp….

    Forza Lazio
    Forza Cragnotti
    Forza Moggi

Why is Lazio finding it so hard to score, I always find it so easy to score, but that could be because I am a PA.

I only wish Lazio could score as much as I do.

Bringing back Cragnotti may sound far fetched but I heard he has talked about the possibility of coming back. We miss you Sergio!!! We miss the success…. Dont let this great team go down to Serie B

Enough about the gay talking and focus it back on soccer (Bruno you’re a fagget).

DiCanio watns a coaching job at WestHam but i really wish he would coach at Lazio. Even if he wasn’t the greatest coach I’m sure he would bring some heart and some discipline to the squad. I would love it if Cagnotti came back too but until he starts making as much money as he used to before he took over the club the first time, we’re unfortunately stuck with Lotito and the annoying statements of Vincenzo D’Ippolito.

Under Lotito, it would never happen and while I understand where Paolo is coming from with his comments, it does nothing for the good of Lazio.

Everything he says makes perfect sense until the takeover issue. I don’t believe Paolo di Canio knows all the answers there…
