Pavel To Quit
By: cathal | February 26th, 2009I said yesterday that I would like to throw an historical post out there today and how apt, fitting and convenient for me was Pavel Nedved’s decision to retire from football at the end of the season. As an ex-Lazio legend, it is only fair to give him a post of his own, especially on the week I ask you to vote for your recent Lazio hero. Nedved didn’t make my shortlist but you can still make your feelings known here
There’s two reasons why I decided against including Pavel in the shortlist. For one, he was unlucky in a sense to have been part of a successful and classy team. The second reason is the best of him was found at Juventus. I wouldn’t go as far to say Nedved was the star man of our team while he was here; the truth is, he wasn’t and he never carried the influence the likes of Veron, Simeone and Mihajlovic had in abundance. He always came across as a quiet figure, a contemplative worker but also, he was a bit dirty on the field. I think for many, he was the apparent angel who was more aligned to a devil. That’s probably harsh but you may get what I mean.
Some were upset at the way he left the club and that is fine but as with any transfer of that era, we will never fully understand the circumstances surrounding the club. The sickening factor was having to see Pavel excel in his first few years at Juve. As far as I am concerned, he was the world’s best player for a season or two. We never got that at Lazio; that was the Nedved we missed. However, I can’t deny that he was a high calibre player and if he reads this (which he won’t), I would like to wish him all the best in his life after football. He was and still is a great player and soccer will miss him. That’s a fact. Forza Lazio!

Nedved is one of the game’s best ever players, a true legend. I’d even go as far as to say I would rather have had him in my team than his predecessor at Juventus, the great Zinedine Zidane.

No. I actually don’t think so. Zidane was always replaceable, Nedved played a position that lacked quality worldwide.
