Relaxation Period
By: cathal | August 1st, 2009After that hectic 24 hours or so, now is the time to take a deep breath, kick back and relax. One of the joys and burdens of being a laziale at present is that, while you can make an educated guess as to what may be happening in Rome, you can never accurately predict when it is all going to unfold. The reality is, should my internet go wonky for the weekend, I could tune into the Supercoppa this time next week and not recognise the team I love. Anything can happen at Lazio; and it usually does.

Therefore, despite my best attempts to keep you in the know, I feel the need to clarify the situation. Cruz is official but Bengtsson is not. There are varying reports as to how close Rasmus is to making a move; one minute he’s in Rome on a tour around our facilities, the next he is boarding a plane in Amsterdam. Very confusing scenario but I tend to believe his agent. I reckon he is simply looking for a new club and we are the frontrunners. The deal could be virtually complete, it could be nearing completion but whatever the status is, it is certainly not finalised. Another potential issue is the difference in our season and the Swedish equivalent. He is currently in peak condition, in the middle of his season and while that could be an asset for Beijing, he needs a break at some point. The logical solution would be to sign him now and have him move over in January when he has had a sufficient break. Many factors need to be taken into consideration and the complexity of his case demands additional time.

The Beijing squad was also announced yesterday and I believe Aldo was gracious enough to post it in the comments section of the previous post. If you have taken a quick look, you will notice that the dissidenti have been left behind. No Ledesma, no Pandev, no De Silvestri, and most surprisingly, no Stendardo either. I would assume he is considered good enough and fit enough to travel. Thus, I can only draw one conclusion; he is in negotiations with another club. In fact, the whole procedure is strange as we have a certain Cribari who announced his desire to leave and is yet a part of the travelling squad. Perhaps there is a catch; two spots have been left vacant and I have a gut feeling that these are reserved for players whose negotiations may end in time for the big game. That is purely speculation though, I have little evidence but to think the players are being left behind due solely to their behaviour is naïve. There’s more to it than that; there has to be.

Should any more information become available, I will keep you posted in the comments section. Forza Lazio!

@ Paoletto: Tough one. Ridiculous prices being put on players heads, we got Zarate for a huge price which will hopefully pay off and since then, we’ve brought in a few players at bargain prices. We can’t go wrong with Cruz or Eliseu; perhaps there are better, long-term options out there but I think considering the uncertainty of player’s futures, we have taken the right approach.
@ robert: Pandev and Lollo don’t matter too much. Lichtsteiner is our starting right-back anyway, Scaloni is a solid fallback if required and Pandev has admitted mental weakness towards the end of last season. I genuinely think he is not a starter anyway at this time. So, for me, the issue is Ledesma and maybe even Stendardo. Cristian has stated a desire to sit down with Lotito for a talk on his future and that could well mean we will see him in Beijing this time next week. I think having Baronio or someone else in his place would be a big loss. Also, we could do with two experienced centre-backs against the wily Eto’o and Milito and given the pace of the Cameroonian, Siviglia is not a great option. It is impossible to assess how great a loss Guglielmo will be in this specific tie. On the whole though, Inter start favourites but not by too much.

At present, Ballardini must prefer them.
Inzaghi has had an excellent pre-season and I guess at this moment in time, he is regarded as the better option. Mendicino will get his chance but considering he has yet to prove himself at any level, I guess the Supercoppa Italiana is not the stage for him. As for Baronio, he did well with Brescia last season, has had an extended break and I reckon Ballardini sees this as a good game to test him out. Firmani, as impressive as he has been in pre-season has shown little to say he can do a better job. I’m guessing that’s the logic behind it all anyway.

Cathal, not sure if you watched the Craiova game, but that was enough evidence to show that Inzaghino is finished. He simply isn’t good enough. I’d have taken Mendicino just for the experience and left Simone to enjoy the birds beaches back home for a week.
Stendardo has never really appeared in Ballardini’s plans and I reckon he’ll be sold off. I dont mind him, but if we get Bengtsson/Lugano or both, it’ll be OK.
Whether any new signings will be able to step into the team in time for Pechino is unlikely, esp as the team has already left. I’d say Cruz will be the only new boy to feature.

Also, Oddo could be back. With Scaloni reportedly off back to Mallorca, we need a fullback and Milan are offering us our old capitano.
I hold his departure against him but IF he returns to his old Lazio wages and IF he accepts a place as Lichti’s backup, I’d take him back.
We could even play with Oddo at RB and Licht at RM. Oddo is a solid penalty taker and the old number 22 shirt is free. Thoughts?

I saw some of the Craoiva game but from what I have seen, I still think Inzaghi is more useful than Mendicino at present; especially for games like these.
As for Oddo, I would welcome him back with open arms if the conditions you mentioned are met. He is a Milanista; the way he left wasn’t pretty but that was his dream and he couldn’t pass it up. He keeps talking about his love for Lazio and I believe him. I actually think he has the potential to caoch this side one day so perhaps a move for Oddo holds numerous benefits. Doubt it will happen but I’d welcome it.

Oddo is an over-rated wing player whose only saving grace was his ability to take a solid penalty. He can’t cross to save his life as Milan found out, and as I’m sure Bayern Munich were also ’shocked’ to find.
He has NOTHING to offer us. Selling LDS would be a real waste but if it happened, should be cash only.
Looking forward to the 8th August.

Wow, that’s harsh on Massimo, Omar. I get your point though; his games is hardly mindblowing but I still think he is a decent back up.
I’m not posting now because whatever happens, there will be two posts tomorrow. I reckon Bengtsson will become official in the next 24 hours and Scaloni to Mallorca seems imminent too. Negotiations have been confirmed.
Apparently Bolatti is the likely replacement for Ledesma if he goes. I don’t know too much about him, I think he is a huge risk but considering he was voted the best player of the 2009 Clausura, he is in scintillating form and difficult to overlook. It will be interesting to see what happens there as that rumour is gathering pace.
