Review of the Year: January – June
By: cathal | December 30th, 20082008. Not the most memorable year in Lazio history. It will probably be remembered as a transitional period, a year in which many new faces arrived and where optimism and pessimism met somewhere in the middle. Depending on what lies ahead in the future, 2008 will either be seen as a catalyst or a step in the wrong direction. We all hope for the former.
So let’s get this show on the road as we remind ourselves of the year that’s been, 2008.
January was welcomed in a mist of negativity. A poor start to the season which saw us languishing in the mid-table region and elimination from the Champions League left little to shout about. Nevertheless, the team trudged on and new blood was introduced; the defensive duo of Radu (above) and Rozehnal and the third man of the strikeforce, Bianchi. On the football field, we got 2008 off to an awful start in Serie A with a disastrous home loss to Genoa followed by draws against Napoli and Torino. In the Coppa, we managed to dump out Napoli and then the Viola to book a place in the semis. Still, there were few signs that our fortunes were about to change but at least we had new men at our disposal.
Highlight of the Month: The new signings and not much else.

February
Lazio kicked February off with a much needed win against Sampdoria. However, the inconsistency continued with a tense 1-0 loss at the hands of soon to be relegated Empoli. We then retaliated with a rather flattering win over Atalanta before succumbing to a dire Cagliari side. In a month where win was followed by loss, we rounded it off with a fine performance against Reggina where the likes of Bianchi, Meghni and new arrival Dabo all excelled.

March
The month began with a hard earned point against Milan in the San Siro. Pandev and Rocchi stole the show the next week against Livorno. A topsy turvy draw with Udinese preceded the greatest win of 2008: the derby day victory. Behrami’s last minute goal gave us the spoils as we walked away victorious and in high spirits. Typically, we lose three days later to Fiorentina. A 1-1 draw with Inter rounded off what was an excellent month for us overall.
Highlight of the Month: take a guess! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0jF93f8sp8&feature=related

April
Bad start to April with another draw against another side in turmoil, Parma. Points were later thrown away against Siena and Catania before we took an absolute hammering in Turin. Despite suffering badly in the Campionato, we did manage to hold Inter in the first leg of our Coppa tie. Sadly that was to no avail as we crashed and burned in May’s return leg. Possibly the worst month of the year.
Highlight of the Month: There is a highlight for April???
* * * * *
May
The month began badly as Amauri took advantage of the Juve hangover and gave Palermo three points. We redeemed ourselves days later with a rare away win against Genoa who essentially had nothing to play for but pride. We ended the season with a neat win at the Olimpico against Napoli but still finished 12th in the table. It was a crap season, let’s face it. For a side that secured 3rd with a points deduction in the previous season, 12th just didn’t cut the mustard. However Rossi stayed and it was on to the mercato for Lotito while we gently shifted our attention to Euro 2008.
Highlight of the Month: The end of the f**king season…
* * * * *
June
June inevitably became a period of either reflection and complaints or relief and excitement or even both. We all knew we had had a bad season, we all wanted to know what had gone wrong and we all wanted to see things put right. But what we wanted, perhaps more than anything, was for Euro 2008 to ease all our woes. Unless you’re Spanish, you probably ended up as sick as ever.
Highlight of the Month: Lazio women’s 5-a-side team winning the Scudetto (or if you’re Spanish, Euro 2008).

Part 2 tomorrow.

Trollin trollin trollin. I gotta admit a little sumin sumin, I love comin over here to give you guys shit. I am pretty sure Cathal made fun of me for spelling correctly so I will insult you here using some typical lazie vernacular; Your lame, you’re team sucks. Forza Roma. Honestly though guys isn’t il mercato about dreaming big? Look at the refuse you blue little ladies are trying to sign. It looks like a bad eastern european national teams bench is heading into Lazio.

Right. Because Rioma are dreaming big in trying to sign an ex-laziale who denied you the Scudetto and some Dutch guy with a broken leg.
The mercato for you is about dreaming big because dreaming is as close as you get to being big.

Hahahahaha…. Nicely done Cathal.
ASR, Why do you feel the need to come here?? Why don’t you just keep to your own pathetic Rioma blog. Nobody here cares what you (or any other frocio Riomanista) have to say.

Franco, see previous post. Roma-LAzio one of the most bitterly contested rivalries in the world, do you need to ask why I come here and troll? Also, not nicely done Cathal. That retort combined the creativity of the republican party, the wit of a 4th grade girl, and the offensiveness of oatmeal. C’mon guys, if this rivavlry is going to truly live stateside you guys need to actually offend us. Use some of your nazi/fascist/racist slurs or insults, you guys are good at that.
Also, V-N would never be mentioned in the same breathe as your minnow club. NO one wants ex-naziale wearing giallorossi, check crespo.
If we resigned our current players, Roma would have a better mercato than lazie.
Also Franco, how do you judge a blog. Is it measured by the written articles, the quality of responding posts, the quantity of responding posts, or do you blindly just think ours is pathetic? WE got your minnow squad beat, your minnow blog beat, and your minnow ambitions beat.
Try to tell me you guys have had better results lately. TRY!

Cathal, is it fair to suggest you wouldn’t need recourse to your spell-checker for the phrase “inferiority complex”?

Happy new year to all of Laziali on this blog!!!Cathal, ignore this riomanista,he is obviosly a piece of shit.

@ Robbie: If you hadn’t noticed, I never insulted you. What I did was dismiss your insults. It’s mildly humorous how you come here to offend us and yet you are the one left upset. I’m all for the freedom of speech but I don’t wish to see this blog become a forum for Laziale/Riomanista slurs. Thanks for giving us a few hits and inadvertently increasing our popularity but please take yourself home to http://roma.theoffside.com and stop doing your team a disservice on these pages. Thank you.
PS. Anymore long length attempts at causing offence will be treated as “spam” and will be dealt with accordingly.

cathetic, it’s new year’s eve, within 2 hours of midnight where you are, and you’re busy editing people’s posts. now that is dedication….actually, pathetic is more apt.

I admit it lamagica, I am pathetic. I have been out with friends all day and am now about to bring in the new year with my family while you persist in reposting the same comment on the oppositions blog despite seeing it removed on three occasion already.
My friend, THAT, is irony…

I have removed the last few comments for the following reasons:
This is a Lazio blog. Everyone is welcome to come here and pass comment but the fans of our club are the ones that concern me the most. Freedom of speech is allowed but only to an acceptable level. Now, a debate has occurred between a Palermo fan, a Juventus fan and some pesky Riomanista. No Lazio fans were partaking in the discussion which lead me to conclude that it was of no interest to our fans. If you want to have a discussion regarding Italian politics in the early-mid twentieth century then feel free to do so on another blog.
@ Lorenzo/Alessio: I hope you don’t take offence and I am sure you understand where I’m coming from. Contributions from you are always welcome here. There’s no need for me to tell you who instigated this debate.
Thanks. Now let’s move on.
