S(ailor) S(uit) Lazio

By: cathal | June 7th, 2009

A few weeks ago, I presented you with a poll regarding what was supposedly next season’s home kit and third strip. In the last couple of days, a new version of the home kit has emerged and after seeing this debatable beauty, is it time to rename our club or has Puma simply forgotten what our initials stand for? Please see below.

I’m usually not one to kick up a fuss about shirts but what on earth is this? In a sense, it is cool, it’s refreshing, it’s different, it’s unusual and all other quirky adjectives besides but it is also downright hideous and idiotic in aesthetic value. A cross between the most undesirable sailor suit you have ever come across and a kit for the world’s richest mayors. I just don’t understand Puma’s logic on this one. If you do happen to like it, can I just say, this is not only my opinion but the opinion of, I’d say ninety-five percent of the laziali I have spoken to. Every neutral I have conversed with has laughed at it also. Now, I can see why some may find it appealing and if you happen to be one of that minority, please find the guts within to make yourselves known on the comment box. We will not laugh at you; simply, we need to know how you convinced yourself that you like this jersey because if I have to look at this shirt for most games next season, I will have permanent nausea and if you specialise in hypnotherapy or whatever technique it is you are using, please let me know. Of course, I am exaggerating slightly here, but in all honesty, they are bad shirts, right?

Some inventive laziale out there has drafted up his/her own alternative (see above). My one criticism of this shirt is that it is quite underwhelming and outdated but nevertheless, surely an improvement on what we are set to face next season? I’ll not run a poll on this one but please, let me know what you think in the comments box. I never thought a bit of cloth would put me in such a frenzy. The first part of the season review will be posted tomorrow. That’s a promise. Forza Lazio!

The second one is nice; classy.

    The first…I’m at a loss for words…

    W. T. F. seriously! that neck pattern, whatever it is, looks cheap and nasty, how does that even relate to anything…

WTF are they thinking? Are they even trying to make it look appealing? That is just pure hideous. If that’s our new season’s jersey then I won’t be buying one this year. As for the 2nd one (whether there is any chance of that jersey becoming our home strip?) I really like it. I think it’s simple, classy and very appealing.

The second one is nice. The first one is crazy ugly. Plus, where would the Coppa patch go? If it went in the center of the jersey… Well then it would be at the apex of the point and that would be terribly silly. In fact, the patch in the center of the chest is the only bad thing about that second shirt.

That’s right. It’s not like we don’t laugh at your shirts every season. At least we have the guts to do something about our designs.

The first shirt I will describe in 2 words- FUCKING DISGUSTING!!! Puma should employ the guy who designed the alternative and rip the current designers eyes out. Seriously. He’s a sick man whoever he is. FORZA LAZIO!!!

MR. Cathel (what kind of name is that?) , ur comment makes no sense whatsoever. Roma has one of the top uniforms in the league.

This shirt needs some serious help. Hope they reconsider using it. The second one isn’t that much better. Someone should be able to design a cool shirt for us at Puma.. FORZA LAZIO

Hello – one of your Spanish friends here.

Not a fan of either shirt, but I’m guessing the funny neck pattern is meant to mimic the eagle on the club crest.

The second shirt looks a little tacky to me because of the blue outline around the crest, but I like the stripe-down-the-side look. Maybe a thinner pair of stripes, like Barcelona’s away kit this season (yellow with one thin blue and red stripe running down the left underneath the club crest).

I like it! It has a very cool, modern look. It’s unfussy and for me has great aesthetics and balance. And the colour is divine.

So we have quite a difference in opinion.

The neck pattern is a design found on all Puma shirts this season, but yes, the particular pattern does appear to be an attempt to mimc the eagle’s wings.

Great to see some new names on the blog.

I hope to combine the season review now into one post which I will have online roughly in 12 hours.

In the meantime, any more thoughts on the shirt, or Rossi’s departure?

Cathal, Do you really laugh at Roma’s shirts every season??

I mean Im a Roma supporter, and honestly I love our shirts, but admit we have had some shockers as well on the way.

On this years Lazio tops, if I was a Laziale I too would be dissappointed. Generally Puma usually do a good job with the tops, and the good thing is they dont usually follow the one or two designs like kappa, nike, adidas etc. But that one is just awful.

The fan submitted top is nice, I remember when Roma had some fan submitted tops and I was thinking to myself that these people seem to have better design sense then the ones earning the money.

UGH! The first design is brutally awful. I’ll buy closeout versions of last year’s instead! The second one is better but I liked the first ones posted last week better than either.

Yeah, who thought these were an improvement on the original designs they conjured.

@ Sam: I am a laziale so clearly I don’t like Rioma shirts. Inbuilt bias, can’t help it but the “laughing” comment can perhaps be attributed more to Nick’s idiocy than anything else.

This is an attempt to call a truce before I track down all the laziali mock-ups of Rioma shirts…

I know you weren’t Sam, no worries, Nick came over here and provoked us and unlike the rival blog, I allow this and will simply respond as I see fit.

You came over, made an honest comment and I replied with decency. You may be a rival fan, but you have my respect.

    Take care.

    Fascinating comments.
Nick – you are absolutely hilarious. Mr Cathel – what kind of name is that. Oh I laughed hard! Obviously Nick you aren’t too well travelled my man! It’s a classic Irish name and the ‘th’ is silent – so it is pronounced Cahal – I had a good friend called Cathal at Uni.

Sam – you’re a top man. Fair comments.

Yeah that stripe is hard on the eye.

I want a famous name for a new manager. Can we afford it? Forza the Ladz.

Good work on my name. Whether it’s pronounced ‘Cahal’, ‘Caw-hill’, ‘Ca-thal’ or ‘Cal’, I don’t mind. There’s no real right or wrong. You can say it however you like, you probably know the name better as Charles in english, Carlos in spanish, Carlo in Italian etc… All are fine. So as insults go, that was pretty lame Nicola.

End of the debate as far as I am concerned.
