Simplicio Solution

By: cathal | June 27th, 2009

In my opinion and in the opinion of many others, our midfield is the area that looks particularly vulnerable at present. With Ledesma set to leave and with negotiations for Matuzalem becoming a seemingly endless process, I am worried that we could go into the Europa League qualifiers in six weeks’ time with a centre that just is not good enough. That in mind, I have to ask myself; why haven’t we snapped up Simplicio?

I realise the jury is out on him with many citing inconsistency and simply (excuse the pun) a lack of ability as the main reasons why we should avoid making a bid but I can’t empathise with that viewpoint. Statistics may obscure the truth from time to time but they certainly don’t lie and when you compare Fabio’s stats for last season with our current midfield, I am almost ashamed to even display them. Keep in mind, this only takes Serie A into account (as Palermo were immediately dumped from the cup).

Fabio Simplicio37 games played, 8 goals, 9 assists.
Cristian Ledesma34 games played, 2 goals, 1 assist.
Francelino Matuzalem14 games played, 0 goals, 0 assists.

The above statistics make embarrassing reading. Don’t get me wrong, I like our guys. I think Cristian’s dirty work and defensive help is severely under-appreciated by the majority of fans and I firmly believe Francy, with his guts and guile, improved our performances when he played. However, Simplicio has got everything we need in my opinion; he poses a goal threat, he can create, he stays fit, he is solid, he is a Serie A veteran and perhaps most importantly, he is in the prime of his life. In this period of uncertainty, where we can’t be sure if any of our centre-midfielders will remain, I think the 6million Zamp is asking for is a price we should accept instantaneously. Considering many hope or even expect Cristian to go for 15-20million and Francelino to be snatched for a sum in excess of 7million, I think 6million for Fabio is a very small price to pay. Forza Lazio!

Yes, Elias is a box-to-box midfielder. I don’t particularly like box-to-box midfielders; in Italy, they tend to be tactically inept. Being able to run and having great fitness levels is certainly a help but not a necessity to be a quality player.

He has no Serie A experience, no experience in Europe and for that reason, I think he is not worth the risk; not for the price mentioned.

Lucas Barrios, as Argentinian striker who plays for Colo Colo in Chile is probably next in line to sign for us. That would explain why we didn’t go for Acquafresca. It will be interesting to see how that deal develops. 5million is the speculated price.

i agree that simplicio is good for us i was just asking for some info about the other guy because i never heard of him so now when u tell me cathali who he is i think that we should buy simplicio right away sign matuzalem and maybe find another playmaker who should be a sub for those two because we all know how matuzalem is and plus because we r playing in europe too

Simplicio is a steal at 6-8m Euros. At the very least, Lazio can sell those two for big money, secure an able replacement (Simplicio) and use the excess funds to strengthen other areas.

Sorry guys but I’d prefer they go for wonder kid Ever Banega over Simplicio.

Banega is the last person I want to see at Lazio…

He proved nothing in Argentina really, he was just very highly rated. He comes to Valencia, immediately gets involved in a sex scandal. They value him so much they loan him to a direct competitor. Clearly he must have some kind of attitude problem. He is also completely indisciplined.

The guy has a lot of growing up to do in my opinion. More a Carrizo than a Zarate.

Guarente is the other name that has entered the fray.

Cath, is Guarente any good? I haven’t heard much about the guy except that the Atalanta fans highly rate the man. According to reports in Italy, Lotito is offering Atalanta a swap deal, Guarente for Cribari.

Also it is definate that Ladesma is leaving Lazio – looks like Juve are the current favourites to sign him after their purchase of D’Agostino Failed. I personaly can’t wait to get rid of him and Pandev – not beacuse I don’t rate them but beacuse we need to sell both if we are to get our mercato off and running and I am sick to death of reading about these 2 leaving Lazio, just go already!!

Guarente? He is more than decent, not a goalscoring midfielder but certainly a playmaker. I probably haven’t watched him in action enough to know if he can make the step up from Atalanta to Lazio but he’s young and would certainly grow into the team in time I would think. A very intruiging player and perhaps a Ballardini pick?

Anyway, I don’t think a straight swap for Cribari is sufficient to prise him out of Bergamo but we will see.

The only person who needs to leave lazio is Lotito. I appreciate him playing hardball with certain players throwing that article 17 garbage around. But enough of this Fabio Simplico, Ever Banega rubbish. We once had some of the best players in the world play for us, now we have to settle for unknown argentineans and who the hell is Eliseu…

I guess this is Lazio now….. I heard Juve is close to getting Grosso for 2.5m, thats a bargain he’s still got it big time, can Kolarov play on the right, well thats if he doesnt go to Inter Merda.

Odd that I’m reading Lotito has to go…how quick we forget. Champions League campaign, winning the Coppa…all from a club that was on it’s knees a few years ago.

Cragnotti delivered trophies but he destroyed the club, in regard to Lotito he is having to get rid of a lot of dead wood around the club and is having to make some tough decisions…but surely no one can question that he is making them in the best interests of the club.

I love this club but sometimes I think as fans we are unreasonable and also I keep reading about how vital Pandev and Ledesma are…how many actual offers have we received for them?

Obviously not as highly rated outside the club as they are inside.

Luigi, you raise some very good points. I too agree with what you’ve said about Ladesma and Pandev… if they really are that good, why are the offers to purchase them flooding in? I am sick to death of all these players chasing dollars – what happened to the good old days when a player respected his club and spent the majority of his career there?? These things need to come slowly and with time they will but at the same time, the thing that pisses me off most is that Lotito is willing to sell one of Lazio’s best prospects – De Silvestri.

We need a few more Maldini’s, Del Piero’s & Baresi’s but no Totti’s – he is just a Frocio Riomanista!

That’s cause Lollo wants to leave, can’t handle having to work for his place.

Meh, he’ll just rot on the bench at Genoa or Napoli anyway. He has no intention to stay at Lazio.

Seems like we are now interested in another central midfielder, Gojko Kacar.German papers are talking that Herta will let him go for a sum of around 8 mil.
We have also be linked with South African defender Siboniso Gaxa.He had couple of very good games in the Confederations Cup and now many clubs are interested in him.
One more thing.I’m wondering does anybody know what is happening with Nedvrd? His agent sad that they have our offer but they are thinking about MLS?WTF!!!
