Speculation Is Rife
By: cathal | November 20th, 2008Transfer speculation is all the news around Lazio at the minute and for obvious reasons.
Media rumours are revolving around particular individuals. Cribari seems set to leave Lazio in January. Personally I think this would be a shame considering he’s a decent defender and has a killer admiration for our club. However, it seems Spartak Moscow are attemtping to acquire his services. Should this move go ahead, it paves the way for the arrival of a new defender. The candidates? Well the latest name to have emerged is Jonathan Maidana. I would be highly surprised if anything materialises here, simply because he just joined Metalist Kharkiv at the end of August. It is certainly an intriguing prospect although I must admit I know less than little about him. There’s also a possibility that De Silvestri will be loaned out in the new year. I would hate to see him going but it could be good for him and for us. However, Siviglia is now a doubt for the Genoa tie so that could leave an open door for those who appeared to be frozen out.
Most of the rumours centre around the potential exit of Ledesma. Names linked with this role are Escudero of Villareal and Blanco of Lanus. I know nothing about Blanco, but Escudero looks an excellent player and would be a top signing. He is young, is gaining Champions League experience and would more than likely fit in our system. But, the huge rumour at the minute is that we could be about to make a move on Mascherano. Can’t see how this could be credible but if Lotito can find the cash and has the ambition, who knows! He wouldn’t just replace Ledesma, he would surpass him and the thought of potentially having one of the world’s best midfielders in our side is mindblowing.
The signs do seem to suggest we are snooping around the market again which can only be a good thing. Clearly we have to reinforce but I think the most important thing is that we hold on to what we’ve got because we are going places with this side we have built and the last thing we need is to make major modifications. Let’s see what happens.

Mascherano is a monster of a player, but Liverpool is having a good season,i doubt he`ll leave it.Sad to hear about Cribari, excellent player, really devoted to Lazio…Any news about Matias Fernandez? We surely need reinforcement in the midlefield.

Nothing on Fernandez of late. I think Simeone leaving will have a major impact on any potential deal.

Chill. The whole Zarate-Madrid talk spawned from Mauro’s mini-break in Spain following the derby loss. I can’t believe there is anything in those rumours and even so, we have first option which means up to a certain date, we can purchase Mauro for a fixed price. He’s going nowhere.

I want to say one thing about classy players who might want to leave (I am not saying Zarate does, but it can always happen – like Jimenez etc.):
they can f*** off
I’m not begging anyone to stay to play for the biancoceleste shirt

Anybody anything to say about the Mutarelli affair?
It seems to be very sour and unpleasant. I feel very sorry for the guy – he played very well anytime I saw him and suddenly he is off the radar and not getting paid. I am sure it is not as simple as his lawyer is making it out to be, but I thought he was a damn reliable midfielder.
That is one disappointing thing about the new Lazio era – stories abound of players complaining of bad treatment by the hierarchy. That’s what going bust does to ‘companies’.

What is there to say about the Mutarelli?
Details are sketchy. Just to draw on a point you made Omar, there is a fine line between being ruthless and being stubborn. Successful businesses need ruthless running; tough decisions and the odd risk. Now, someone decided Muta was to have no part in the team. This may be foolish in the long run or it could be a wise gamble but Brocchi was brought in over the summer and Dabo came in January so I guess Massimo’s days were always going to be numbered. It’s important to have individuals who wear the shirt with pride and Muta indicated many times in the past that he loved the Lazio shirt but I guess his decision to take court action vindicates whoevers decision it was to freeze him out. Massimo has proven himself to be disruptive and perhaps he was one of the select bunch who caused trouble in the dressing room last season. That’s just a theory, who knows.
Point is, we couldn’t sell him, we didn’t want him and it had to result in something. Whether this was a good move or a bad move only time will tell but the signs say we are better off without him. Even if he was a passionate player and could have served a purpose.
