Spoiled For Choice
By: cathal | September 26th, 2008I’m tempted to say that we couldn’t have got off to a better start this season. Ok, I know for more than half the Cagliari game we were down and out and I know we let four goals past us in Milan but did anyone expect to pick up nine points from a maximum twelve in games that included three of the best sides in Italy? We truly have had a magnificent start.

However, nothing is perfect in life and a strong beginning brings its own unique problems. The biggest obstacle in our path could actually be something that was meant to help us; squad depth. For example, we have managed to score more goals than anyone else in Serie A so far but without our goal machine and captain, Rocchi. Not only that but how do we reintegrate our most influential player into a frontline who together has accumulated seven goals in four games. It would take a brave man to leave out Pandev or Zarate given their current form. So what can we do? Well, I guess the only other option is to leave out Mauri or Foggia. Foggia has been somewhat of a catalyst for us, coming off the bench to devastating effect or just making Fiorentina look silly and Mauri, one of Delio’s personal faves, has shown glimpses of past form. Of course, leaving out either of these two guys is dangerous as it leaves us without a natural trequartista. This could mean Pandev will have to drop back thus nullifying his goal threat. A tough decision for Rossi, but one he will be forced to make.

Mauri’s future role in the team could well be in the midfield alongside vice-captain Ledesma (who was again linked to Juve today). However, Matuzalem is also a candidate for that position when fit and what about Dabo? Brocchi has had a long stint in the team in the absence of Ousmane but who will be favoured when both are eligible to play? Where does Meghni fit into the system? Mourad may be versatile and his form and fitness is ever improving but when everyone is fit, he could well find himself on the sidelines along with the likes of Firmani. Again, these are tough decisions for Rossi, but decisions he will be forced to make and decisions on which this season could ride upon.
And if you thought the depth lay solely in the attacking thirds of the pitch, then I think you could be wrong. Yes, Rozehnal and Siviglia have established themselves as the first choice central defensive pairing but Cribari was impressive against the Viola and keep in mind that he missed a lot of the pre-season through injury. Also waiting patiently is Diakite’ who looks like an immensely sturdy defender and let’s not forget Radu could adopt that position in the near future. However, I think the left and right back positions are particularly intriguing. For me, Kolarov and De Silvestri are wing backs; they like to get forward but sometimes forget to defend. Lichtsteiner and Radu provide stability but less of an attacking threat. Therefore, I feel Rossi’s choice of backs will always be interesting and could give some indication on how the team intends to play. The only constant in the team right now is Carrizo. He is the undoubted No.1 and as yet, Muslera isn’t even close. To have a safe pair of hands between the goals each week makes a huge difference, especially when we could all be continually left guessing who the other ten men on the teamsheet may be.

I think a lot of what happens this season could depend on who Rossi sends out onto the field. For sure we have many options now that we haven’t had in previous seasons but keep in mind that the gap in quality between the first choice and the second choice is minimal now and this is potentially problematic. Were we all to sit round a table and pick our Lazio XI, I think few of us would actually agree on a team. In addition to that, I’m sure few of us will agree with Rossi’s eventual XI when it emerges but to be honest, I don’t care who he picks as long as the positive results continue. He is the one who is paid to make the decisions, the rest of us can and will only dream.

any chance you guys can play a trident up front?
foggia is young, correct? bench him in favor of rocchi?
zarate is insane at the moment however. every goal he’s scored has been incredible so far. kid can play.

Trident has been mentioned, but I am concerned that we will lose firepower if we go with this system. To play Zarate and Pandev behind Rocchi would be counterproductive in my opinion. However, that is just my opinion.

I understand your point of view Cathal, but I think Zarate and Pandev behind Rocchi should be tried. I think it could really work, but a lot will depend on what midfield combination Delio plays with them.

why not 2 up top with one of them as a playmaker?
im not a big lazio follower, but which of the 3 is more of a playmaker?
maybe rocchi and pandev as strikers with zarate in behind them? or swap zarate and rocchi?
or maybe zarate plays so well that the point is mute and you cant keep him off the pitch? heh

Well, comments made by Rossi suggested he though Zarate could play behind as one of 2 men in a 4-3-2-1 formation. If this trident is played, I think it will be Pandev and Zarate behind Rocchi, but I think Foggia would suit this system, so this would cause a dilemma. I am guessing in future 4-3-1-2 formations, Pandev will be behind Zarate and Rocchi.

i think a 4-3-1-2 could work real well.
well whatever, lazio’s playing well right now, if it aint broke dont fix it.
what a mercato you guys had!

Definitely the best mercato of the last few years, and those of us who were paying attention knew it right away. We were strengthened in every area, and as Cathal pointed out, the depth in the squad this season is amazing. It would have been great to take this team to the CL last year…
Anyway, I think it would be interesting to use a 4-3-2-1, with Foggia on the wing. But who knows? There’s a ton of options, and I’m ok with a lot of them.

it is still way too early to be talking scudetto or CL for anyone. i think lazio has a quality team and could be playing in europe next year, but the season is so long. and now that the uefa cup has changed format, maybe that will open up a spot for lazio.

Lazio should be encouraged by the poor starts of others (Sampdoria, Milan, Roma, Fiorentina etc.) but the flipside is, teams like Napoli, Udinese and Atalanta have all got off to flyers too. I think we could end up with the mother of all European spot fights at the end of the season and if that turns out to be the case, we need to be in the running. However, it could be simple decisions like who plays on a given day that could decide our fate and this makes the situation all the more fascinating.

I wasn’t suggesting we were going to make the CL, I just said it would have been nice to have this kind of depth when we were in the CL last season. Frankly, I think it’s going to be a battle this year to even get into the top 6. There’s just way too many teams that improved themselves in the summer.

yeah, with the great starts by teams like napoli, genoa, lazio, atlanta and udinese and the inevitable resurgence from teams like roma, milan, fiorentina and samp, and of course with juve and inter, there is going to be serious competition at the top end of the table

Great article Cathal… Tell you one thing, rather these problems then those of last seasons!! What ever Delio Rossi chooses, I’m sure he will impress as he has already done thus far - I have loads of faith in the guy and I think he is the perfect choice for us.
My personal opinion is to have Pendev sit just behind Rocchi and Zarate and in the Mids, why not have 4 and play only 3 in the back that way both Mauri AND Foggia can play (as they both deserve to)??? Let’s have De Silvestri on one side and Brocchi / Ladesma on the other!
I love this squad… for me, the best one since the Cragnotti era! FORZA LAZIO!

look we r all guesing who is gona be in starting 11 but my point is that in big clubs this always is happening if we keep all of the players satisfited and if we make’it in the C.L that means that now we r like the big teams so rossi he can change how much as he wants but i dont care i care about the result and to keep the same team and next yaer that will show how big we r FORZA LAZIO

Thanks Franco. It’s funny, I still worry about those teams who will end up in or around us but, in terms of depth, we have one of the best squads. I think 6th is the goal and I think it is achievable. I mean, if we were in the UEFA Cup this season, I would think we had an outside chance of winning it. I don’t think the 3rd place two seasons ago was a fluke. I think we were genuine Top 4 contenders that season but since then Serie A improved and it’s only now that we have moved with the times. Even last season, with our side decimated by injury and killed by a lack of depth, we came close to hitting the last 16 of the Champions League and the final of the Coppa. It was just league form that let us down but now we have to redeem ourselves. Last season we went backwards while others pushed forward. Now, we have to move ahead of the pack and that is Delio’s responsibility. He lives or dies by each and every decision and we all hope he makes the right ones. Who knows what this season holds!

I agree with kyle and 4_3_1_2 is useful rather than 4_3_2_1 because this system cause aggregation in front of team and I think its better that pandev play behind of rocchi and zarate

I think Pandev as trequartista and Rocchi and Zarate up front would work amazingly. Rocchi and Zarate however need time to gel, but Pandev knows how to play with both of them. Then when subsitutions up front are needed, Foggia could be brought on and switch to 2 players behind one lone striker.. I find Pandev really a more playmaker-styled player, you could just see against Fiorentina how many chances he set up for Zarate..
I hope during the winter mercato we can finally get rid of players such as Inzaghi, Manfredini, Mutarelli and Makinwa and finally get for example Augusto Fernandez and some really good center defender for the future.. Siviglia is getting old now and I think Rozehnal needs someone better beside him than Cribari.. Radu of course is an option but I think its better to have him as left back as Kolarov can sometimes be too unstable at defending..
