The Eagle Flies On Beijing
By: cathal | August 3rd, 2009The Eagle Flies On Beijing: That is the Lazio slogan for Supercoppa Italiana 2009. Below, you will find those words emblazoned across the club bus and if you click the aforementioned slogan, you should find a video from a member of LazioFly; a forum for Chinese laziali. I had a very small role in the overall project, miniscule in fact but as a result, I now know how much effort goes into events like these. If you check our Facebook group, you will find a link with all the necessary information if you, or anyone you know intends on making the trip out there. The video depicts the squad’s arrival at the airport (including a moody Cruz) and the greeting they received from our Chinese counterparts. I can’t emphasise how great an occasion and an opportunity this is for our club and I hope Saturday will be as breathtaking as I expect it to be.

While the team pushes on with their preparations, you may have heard the news that Bengtsson has signed for AZ Alkmaar. I can’t understand how he slipped from Claudio’s grasp; perhaps media reports were inaccurate, presumptious or altogether false. I don’t know and frankly, I don’t care. Rasmus is a talented defender, for less than a million euro he was worth the gamble but coming to Serie A would have been a colossal jump upwards for him and I am not sure he would have made the required height. However, I am now convinced that the Swede was being lined up as Radu’s replacement. Lotito was asked about a potential swap involving Simplicio and although he denied it, he was said to be nervous. Keep in mind, this is the same man who said we were interested in the Brazilian only a few weeks ago. Perhaps Palermo can shed some light on the situation? According to their Sporting Director, Walter Sabatini who was our Sporting Director not that long ago, we are interested in Fabio and they will speak with the player on August 8th. They also admit they are keen on Radu. A very timely meeting in my opinion; holding talks on a player’s future just before the club that are interested in him return from a foreign visit is a signal of intent in my opinion. You can decide for yourself what may or may not be going on.

As for Pandev, Ledesma and De Silvestri there is still nothing concrete. Zenit may be interested in Goran; their boss, Dick Advocaat went nuts recently because the guy in charge of their transfers did not sign the strikers he had asked for. Reading between the lines, that may have included Goran but nobody can say for sure and whether they would bid again on the basis that smoke is billowing from their manager’s ears is another matter entirely. As I see it, Cristian has three options; a reunion with Corvino at Fiorentina, a reunion with Sabatini at Palermo or a move to Milan should Pirlo depart. Lollo has been linked heavily to both Milan and Fiorentina which is encouraging as both should be able to stump up a nice bag of coins. However, we have heard all this before and whether the increased intensity is due to the elapsing of time or actual transfer activity remains to be seen.

Last week, I asked you if the decision to leave the ‘dissidenti’ out of the Beijing squad was correct and you voted as follows:
Yes – 30%
No – 70%
We can discuss this until we are all blue in the face and I have no doubt that many of us have but as far as I am concerned, both parties have their reasons to be disgruntled. Goran and Cristian, in particular, were key in getting us to Beijing in the first place but on the otherhand, they expressed a desire to leave and thus, why should they be given the chance to represent us when they have stated that they no longer want to? It has become more of a moral debate than a soccer matter and sometimes, you just have to draw the line and accept the decision of the hierarchy; the players can try to control their fate but ultimately they are slaves to the club and that is the harsh reality of it all.

This week, the question is topical; are you in favour of playing the Supercoppa abroad or would you rather we played Italian tournaments on Italian territory? This is potentially a highly contentious debate so please be careful with your response. Playing this game away from hope enables us to, for want of a better word, exploit other markets but are you a traditionalist? Would you rather we forget about the economics and play this game on Italian soil? Or do you see this as too good an opportunity to pass up and would you like to see the establishment of a new tradition; of playing the Supercoppa in different continents year in, year out; much like the World Cup? Vote here and feel free to make your opinions known in the comments section. Forza Lazio!

Italians don’t take the super cup seriously so why not take it to a country who will and at the same will fill a stadium? Pretty much every major country has Serie A fans and I say take it to a different country each year and give people a chance on seeing their team play outside of Italy. There is nothing more I would love than to see Lazio play and win something in Australia!!

As for Pandev… Dick Advocaat said it openly: I wanted Pandev but I have Rosina instead.
It is rumoured that Spaletti will become a new Zenit boss. If it is so – I doubt that Pandev will sign for Zenit.Posted from

I saw many reports about it Morze; one says he said it openly the rest imply he didn’t. It looks to me like the media added Pandev into the statement. Are you certain Goran was mentioned?

Yes, Cathal. Here in Russia the conflict between Advocaat and his sporting director is one of the main themes for the press. That’s why his words on the briefing several days ago were citated in detail.

Thanks for clearing that up Morze; it was obviously misquoted by several sources.
De Silvestri is closing on a move to Fiorentina according to reports.

Hey Everyone,
Just a question…I’m going to be in Rome on September 13, and would like to check out Lazio/Juve….Anyone know of a good site or link to buy tickets? I’ve checked out some of these online ticket brokers and the prices are outrageous……do you think there’s a chance I can buy tickets while I’m there?

Fabiucc’ – the way tickets work over here is thus, the couple of weeks before a match tickets go on sale all over the city of Rome and in all the big towns of Lazio in licensed Tabacchi and, depending on where you are, in some automated machines too. Now under usual circumstances buying a ticket to see Lazio is no problem at all, however this is Juve therefore circumstances change. If you’re gonna be in Roma a good couple of weeks before the match then you’ll be fine, just buy them then (and don’t forget we have a fucking massive stadium) if not, then it really depends how much you wanna see that game coz the only way to guarantee it would be to buy it online (at the disgusting online prices) or get yourself a Roman internet pen pal to buy it for you. Also, unless you buy on the first day forget about sitting in the Curva. Any other questions feel free as I spend half my year living in Naples and I know how Serie A works. And no I won’t be in Italy then so I can’t help you pal, sorry.
On the playing abroad issue, when it was announced I didn’t care, then Lazio won the Coppa Italia and I did (especially as I am in Italy now). I cared for a couple of good reasons, 1) It really throws a spanner in a normal pre-season have to decamp to the other side of the world for a week and a bit, training is disrupted, local friendlies are not played and I can’t bloody go watch it. 2) Slighty nationalist I know but I was thinking why the hell do the Chinese get to enjoy Italian teams playing Italian football in an Italian cup final and the Italians (and more importantly our tifosi) don’t?
But the more I think, the more I agree with others, firstly, it isn’t really that watched over here anyway, only by people like me who very rarely get to see Lazio in the flesh. Therefore why shouldn’t the few thousand Chinese Lazio fans get to watch their team (and God knows maybe it’s millions) at least once. And finally, all the economic reasons and the chance to actually make a Man U style Asian fanbase should never be overlooked EVEN if every one of them is converted to Inter instead of us because Serie A really needs the help right now.
Finally, I REALLY wish we would sort our Mercato sooner rather than later because a good pre-season together is absolutely invaluable.

@ Fabio: You should be able to buy tickets while you’re in Rome; normally you can just pick up a ticket from the official store at Via Calderini.
If you want cheaper tickets, I’m afraid you will have to do some careful searching and I really can’t help you with that (if anyone else can, please comment). As I said though, for a ticket in a smaller stand, there is no reason I can see why you can’t get a ticket at the official store a few hours before kick-off.

I like the idea of it being played abroad but my thoughts may be a litle biased since I’m in NYC and would love to see the games get here in the next fews years. Still that’s how I feel.
I think always playing them in the same location whether in Italy or abroad is a bad idea. Maybe you can do one year in Italy, next year abroad [rotating between continents/location]? This would give the ability to continue to grow the game globally while not always depriving Italy itself.

Interesting opinions on what I find to be a fascinating debate; I know it only applies to us because of our participatiion but it is the league we play in and it would be good to gather an opinion on it.
If you haven’t voted on the poll though, please do. It is shaping to be one of the closest yet. I will be looking at new ways to implement polls and other features next week as I plan to have a research week before the new season.

Im so happy about changing Kolarov’s number because I think he is the best one instead of SINISA and in this years when I saw Mauri in this number I think he is lame duck for this because number 11 in LAZIO is holy
and about LAZIO I hope we win the first game in this season and shown the good team for scudettoPosted from

Hey guys Bengsston is a Lazio player after all. A well respected news source in Holland brought out the news about Bengsston going to AZ too soon so that’s what caused all the fuss(they almost never bring out untrue stuff). He was just carefully considering all his options and now seems to have chosen for Lazio. FORZA LAZIO!

Apparently, De Silvestri is going to Fiorentina, Ledesma is going to Milan and Inter will wait till 2010 to sign Pandev on a Bosman. Also, Will Smith is in Beijing to support Lazio. Finally, if the SuperCoppa is held in different venues every year, many more foreign people will take an interest in Serie A. This could provide much needed funds for the league. FORZA LAZIO!!!!

Even if Pandev isn’t sold, I hope Lotito comes good on his threat to nail him to the stands and he never plays for Lazio again.

It seems you are all following the news intently.
Lalaziosaimonoi have posted some possible line-ups for the Supercoppa. It seems we will abandon the 4-2-3-1 for the timebeing and focus on 4-4-2 or 4-1-2-1-2.
Apparently Dabo and Mauri are the centre mids in the 4-4-2 while the latter involves Baronio protecting the back four with Meghni and Brocchi in the centre and Matuzalem as trequartista.
It is at this point that I will reiterate my view that it is our midfield we need to strengthen and not our backline. Without Ledesma, that midfield looks like a recipe for disaster. Matuzalem as trequartista? That may have worked in the Ukraine but 0 assists in 14 Serie A appearances last season says that might be a bad idea.
Either we sign quite a few new players and sell quite a few more or Ballardini is going to have to whip out his magic wand if we want to go anywhere this season.

yeah we definitely need to strengthen our midfield. i think losing ledesma would be really bad for us. lets see what happens

I believe Matuzalem would be a great so-called trequartista though I don’t like the term. He has good creative ability but also great at link up play in central midfield.
Though his figures showed he had no assists attributed to him in serie A, he probably had the best assist of the season when laying the ball off to Rocchi for the 2-1 lead against Juve at home in the Coppa.
Trequartista – what does that mean? I think i first really started hearing the term for Juve’s Diego. To me it means a roaming creative midfielder. Veron style.
Anyway, I think Matuzalem has enough creative flair to fulfil that role.
Looking forward to a great season from Meghni. And Del Nero.

Without sounding condescending or patronising, ‘trequartista’ basically means attacking midfielder. We’re talking Diego, Kaka, Ronaldinho type players. The player you describe Omar is not a trequartista by my definition; just a good midfielder with a touch of class. Rossi tried everybody imaginable as a trequartista in that 4-3-1-2. Nobody worked. How Ballardini plans to get a 4-1-2-1-2 or a 4-2-3-1 without one puzzles me.
Edit: Omar, I completely agree on your opinion of Matuzalem. I thought I’d clear this up as I phrased it badly earlier.

A Veron/Pirlo/Ledesma type player is a regista, literally means ‘director’, a deep-lying playmaker.
Cathal, put simply, we need to strengthen both defence and midfield, not one of the other.

Don’t know if you guys have heard the latest but it looks as though, LDS and Ladesma could now going to Milan to replace the gap left behind by Pirlo and in return, Lazio is set to receive 18 Million plus young Italian prospect Ignazio Abate.
Great news if this is true, although I can’t see LDS getting more game time with Milan than what he did at Lazio. Idiot.

I can’t believe that deal will happen unless Milan actually are intent on selling Pirlo (who claims he’s going nowhere).
However, 18mil + Abate is an orgasmic deal. I rate Ledesma very highly as you all know and while I think De Silvestri is talented, as of now, he is worth nothing and should be sold.
But, Abate is going to fill Camoranesi’s boots in the Azzurri jersey and 18mil + Abate is just mouthwatering.
For that reason, I can’t see it happening
