The Zarate Kid
By: salvatore | June 28th, 2008Well, I’ve been sitting on this bit of news for the last couple of days, mostly because I didn’t think it was going to lead to anything, but as it turns out, I’m a shit interpreter of news. It seems that the deal for Rodrigo Palacio has hit a bit of a snag, and in all likelihood will not see a resolution until July 7th, at the earliest. So, instead of sitting on his hands and waiting patiently, Lotito has already been looking for someone else. His name: Mauro Zarate.
The 21-year old Argentinian comes from a family of footballers (his brothers are all pros) and just spent a season on loan at Birmingham City in England. Apparently, he was ready to sign a permanent deal there when the team got itself relegated. Nice. All in all he seems more similar in style to someone like Lavezzi than Palacio, but he’s equally intriguing as a partner to Pandev and Rocchi.
The only bitch about all this is that Zarate’s contract is owned by Al Sadd, who want something in the region of 20 million pounds for him. That’s not going to happen. Ever. Lotito, ever the shifty bastard, is offering 2 million Euros for a loan deal, with a fixed buy-out clause that’s about halfway to the overinflated price tag the Arabians have placed on him.
I’m not big on the idea of picking up players on loan, but in this case, it may work out to our benefit. There’s no doubt that Lotito will never spent 40 million on two players, which is what’s causing the Zarate or Palacio reports, but with a loan deal, he could in theory bring both in, and then simply pay off the Zarate deal the following year. Theoretically, this could happen (especially since the team might raise some decent money selling off Zauri, Mutarelli, Stendardo, Berni, Baronio, Belleri, Inzaghi, Diakitè and Bonetto), but we know that in practice, all bets are off with our great president.
Here’s a typically impressive youtube comp of The Zarate Kid:

Now I’m no Lazio fan, but why would Lazio want to sell off so many players? Why Zauri? He’s their captain and quite a decent player. And he only turned 30 this year so he does have a few good years still in him. Also, Diakite is a decent, young defender. I would want to keep him if I was a Lazio fan.
And seems that you all have signed Zarate on loan; well at least according to Wikipedia. Congrats! He is an excellent player who I’ve been a fan of ever since he made his debut for Velez years ago.
Though I hate you guys for your ’sympathies’ towards Intermerda (I’m a Juve fan, by the way) I hope you all do well this off season and do well next season. It can only be great for the league to have many competitive teams, as next season promises to be one of the best in recent memory.

Zauri because he is not good enough. And besides he was an awful captain during the latter part of last season. I rather see Radu and De Silvestri as fullbacks and have Kolarov and perhaps another promising signing as backup.

Exactly Fiorini…also most of those guys were either injured or on loan last season, so there would be very little effect offloading them.
P.S. Zarate is ours. I’ll post something a little later.

Zaraté is by far the best player in his family and still has room to grow and improve. I’m glad to see him leave the Qatari league and head to somewhere where he’ll be more comfortable and play a better, higher brand of football. Good luck and enjoy. But don’t get too comfortable, we might need him for the Olympics.

How would you guys feel if Fiorentina paid you a mint for Desilvestri? Would you take it or would you try to continue to build the very promising back line…

When will they reveal their new shirt btw?

MAD – I wouldn’t give up De Silvestri for anything…
Gino, the new jerseys were already unveiled, I’ll post some pics of them soon (no sponsor yet btw).

Hey, I hear a certian ex Lazio / ex Inter midfielder is looking for a way back to his true and only love. Yep, Cesar wants to come home.
cheap cheap cheap, but worth it? Probably not. He was abysmal the last couple times Inter were forced to play him. But then again, you never know. A change in location may be all a player needs to get back in form.

Carrizo, Radu, Rozehnal, probably Moti, Foggia returning, Zarate, Boselli, could you be slightly more positive on this website please? These are great, hell, these are amazing purchases, be happy!

Cesar.. no thanks. We’ve got Kolarov, Radu, (Zauri) for our left flank.. old, his last years have been crap.. waste of the salary budget. He has changed location a few times in recent years and hasnt helped. 9 appearances at Livorno, come on!
De Silvesti HAS to stay. He’s priceless. He’s a product from the youth ranks and I hope he stays with the Biancocelesti for ever.
Dunno about the quality of Boselli.. 7 goals in 40 appearances, reserve striker for Palermo and Palacio at Boca. I prefer Fornaroli..

Well, Cesar… He used to be a worthy winger while he was playing for us but he is just a “has been” player now so no thanks.
We should never sell De Silvestri, he is a future capitano and also a true laziale symbol, an emblematic figure!
That Boselli guy has quality IMHO but he can’t play much while Palacio and Palermo are both before him in the pecking order. For 5 M USD (about 3 M euros) he seems to be a rather good investment.Posted from

zarate is a great player and we need some new signing too and to be hoonest cesar was not that good in last 2-3 yaers but won’t be a big miss i he sign a contract because he is a free agent right now and zauri maybe he did’n play very good but still we can say that the whole team was not on high perfomance so i think we should sell him because this is the last chance of geting some money from him and about de silvestri he won’t go i’m sure forca lazio from macedonia
