Touchdown In Auronzo

By: cathal | July 12th, 2009

The players are now in the small resort of Auronzo di Cadore and have begun their preparation for the season ahead. All the mercato hype has detracted from the fact that our season starts in a measly four weeks and for this reason alone, it’s good to see our players are actually working towards that fixture in Beijing on August 8th. Many of today’s faces may disappear in the coming weeks and many more could appear but for me, there is a distinct freshness surrounding our team.

Zauri has gone to Sampdoria, Merini is on his way to Chievo and Artipoli is off to C. Slowly but surely we are decreasing that squad size and tonight, Ballardini will put his troops to the test against a bunch of Auronzo locals. The rumour is, he will test out a 4-2-3-1 formation as he divided his squad into specific groupings during training. Two line-ups have been suggested and one looks particularly strong, as if it is his idea of a first team. Two inclusions in that side stand out; Cribari and Mauri. Although Stendardo is at camp, his status at our club looks increasingly fragile and I am once again confused about Emilson. If the Brazilian is leaving, I can’t understand why he would be played instead of Rozehnal. A bizarre development. As for Stefano, he is going to be tried out as a trequartista while Zarate and Foggia flank him. This illustrates an incredibly attack-minded formation but with two defensive midfielders, it may just work. Interestingly, Ledesma, Pandev and De Silvestri are part of what I would consider to be the reserve line-up. Much will become apparent in the coming hours.

I’ll be back with a round-up later. Forza Lazio!

The game was divided into 3 segments, each 30 minutes long and we ran out 10-0 winners in the end. Virtually everyone got a run out and goals came from Pandev (3), Mauri (2), Rocchi (2), Firmani (1), Kolarov (1) and Inzaghi (1).

I will discuss the proposed 4-2-3-1 in further detail tomorrow.

Interesting are the new squad numbers. eg. Kolarov taking Mihajlovic’s old 11, but are the others a possible indicator of who is in Ballardini’s plans?? Eg. Correa taking #14 indicates he could stay?

The interesting off the pitch details from Auronzo were that Correa is actually probably off to Salernitana and Quadri has been sold to Pescina Calcio. It was also suggested that Makinwa will play a role for us this season as will Dabo, and that Radu may be this season’s first team right back.

Yep, Correa to Salernitana could be imminent, Quadri is already off to Pescina (same club Artipoli left for) and Tuia has gone on loan to Monza I believe.

I will have an assessment of the 4-2-3-1 and Ballardini’s plans shortly…
