What’s new
By: salvatore | October 15th, 2008Another name for the Lazio defense has (re)surfaced in the last two days: Sporting CP’s Antonio Leonel Vilar Nogueira Sousa, better known as Tonel. The 28 year-old has been linked to the Biancoceleste in the past, but according to Portuguese sports paper A Bola, something could materialize by January. Panathinaikos and Rangers are also reportedly sniffing around him.
Personally, I’m not sure how I feel about this rumour. Tonel is a solid defender, and a step up, I think, from Siviglia. But what about Cribari? Rozehnal? And what about giving younger players like Diakite and Tuia a chance? How adding Tonel to this mix helps us isn’t exactly clear to me, especially when Radu can play as a center back, but he does add a quality stopgap option until some of the younger guys can take over the reins. We’ll see what develops.
If you’re curious, here’s a clip of Tonel scoring a really nice goal (not indicative of his defensive abilities I know, but it is something):
Elsewhere, the team’s ranks have been swelled with the return of both Rocchi and Dabo. The two are going to be included in the squad list for Bologna, but it’s not clear at the moment if they’re going to A) start or B) see any action at all.
I’m assuming that Delio will want to test out a Balboa-Zarate-Pandev trident sooner rather than later, but the question is, who does he drop? Foggia has been playing like a man possessed, so Mauri would seem to be the logical choice (even if, to be fair, he has been much better this season that last). The problem is that Delio seems to have a man crush on Stefano, and I don’t see him wanting to rock the boat too much given the team’s great start this year. What he decides then, is anyone’s guess.
As Cathal wrote a little while back, the Aquile are truly spoiled for choice this year, and Delio literally has his pick of formations and options. Up ’till now injuries haven’t really made it an issue. Starting this weekend though, things are going to get interesting.
Forza Lazio.

An unfortunate result for Macedonia tonight.
Considering Pandev played for the full 90 minutes, I wonder if we could see him rested at the weekend in favour of Rocchi?

I hope it`s just a rumour about Tonel…I think we have enough central defenders,we should search in the middle.

It is good to get all these players back. We will need them in the future. I am a big fan of Mauri – he is awesome when he is on his game. However I would love to see Foggia as a regular – he is a star player, our most skillful player and the sort of guy who can turn a game.
Some difficult decisions for Mr. Rossi, but better to be spoilt for choice than to be suffering like Roma this year and us last year!

Here’s my formation( just off the top of my head):
Carrizo
Lichsteiner Cribari Rozehnal Kolarov
Foggia Ledesma Dabo
Zarate Rocchi PandevMaybe a 4-4-2 would be better looking, in which case:
Carrizo
Leichsteiner Cribari Rozehnal Kolarov
Foggia Ledesma Dabo Matuzalem
Rocchi PandevSilvestre for Leichsteiner when fit.
