Wh…what?

Did we just beat Milan at the San Siro? Feel free to wake me up but is there a chance I’m not actually dreaming?

Tonight was the night. An excellent performance from us saw us prevail over the Milanese giants after extra time. It was a fantastic win which induced a sense of euphoria in me (to be honest, it was only in the pub that it sank in). We managed to beat Milan. What can I say?

There were quite a few standout moments. Muslera’s save from Shevchenko was of the highest standard and I feel Fernando proved a point tonight and was even unlucky not to prevent the single Milan goal. Diakite was just incredible; bullying Kaka all night, hassling and pressurising anything in his path and also adding a few clever passes to his repertoire. Lollo did well; on the attack front, he looked unstoppable, defensively he was a bit suspect, often falling out of position. Nevertheless, our fringe players made the step up and will no doubt be knocking on the door of the established citizens in future games.

Disappointments? Well, there were a few. Tommaso looked awful once again aside from some clever touches and movement. Lichtsteiner’s injury is also a concern and I personally found the midfield to be underwhelming. Even Foggia seemed a bit less lively than usual. No doubt some will hail this as one of the Lazio performances but to be honest, we came within five minutes of being eliminated against a hugely talented side who appeared to be lacking in motivation and desire. If this was a league game, perhaps we wouldn’t have come out so fortunate.

However, we are now in the quarter-finals and we shouldn’t take nothing away from our boys. We delivered and we have also given Delio a lot to think about. Let him think as we approach Inter with a killer mindset. I can honestly say that tonight, I am proud to be laziale. Forza Lazio!!!

The last time we beat Milan in San Siro, was also in the Coppa Italia. (February 2004.) We beat them over two legs 2-1 and 4-0.

Stay tuned for my latest audio blog right after the Inter game Saturday. Live from Curva Nord Bar in Toronto
