Zaragoza Swap Complete?

By: cathal | July 10th, 2009

According to a report and several others that have followed, Lazio have signed Matuzalem permanently for the sum of 6million while Carrizo heads in the opposite direction, on loan for the season and with a 12million buy-out clause upon his head. I hate loaning players that are not needed or paying big bucks for players who spend most of their year on the treatment table but despite this, I feel like we are trading a Volvo for a Ferrari.

Why? Well, it’s simple. JP may be a very good keeper and he may go on to become a world class stopper but his ability on the field will not hide the simple fact that his attitude stinks. In Muslera and Bizzarri, we already have an unlikely hero and a competent understudy and that is all any team needs. In my opinion, we don’t lose anything by letting the Argentine go, however, the negotiations have helped us to gain Francelino. He was plagued with injury problems last season and has been for a few years in fact and for that reason alone, I think we have paid too much. However, he has that touch of class we crave. He can create, he can score goals and he can do all the necessary dirty work as well. When Ledesma and Matu sat in the middle for us last season, we looked a much better side than any line-up without even one of them, such was their influence on the team. If Cristian departs (and that is an ‘if’ now and no longer a ‘when’) then Francy can step in and take control. At that price, it is a risk but a risk that could well pay off. Forza Lazio!

I’m surprised by your dislike of Carrizo’s attitude Cathal. He may come across as a bit arrogant in nets, but that is his personality, and that is comon of the world class keepers. Nothing fazes them. Confidence rarely dips, though it can.

If i had to choose, I would have kept Carrizo.

Anyway, we are spoilt in the keeper’s department for a change. No worries.

Carrizo is a disgrace. Comes across from Argentina to Lazio thinking he’s all that, that he can just command an automatic place cause he plays for Argentina. No-one is bigger than the club, especially a flop, and IMO Muslera has just as much potential, remembering he’s only 22 and has a better work ethic.

An arrogant personality can be great for GKs, but they need the moves to back it up and JP just didn’t. Granted, I think he will eventually prove himself in Europe, I hope we cash in on him and Muslera stays in our goal for the next decade. There’s a lot about Castorino to like.

Muslera and Bizzarri are still one of the best goalkeeping pairs in Europe if you ask me.

@ Omar: Arrogance in a goalkeeper is sometimes a great trait to have, in fact, I think it’s his cockiness that makes him the player he is, but, it appears his persona had a negative effect on the team from what I’ve been told by people in and around the club, despite how it may look on the pitch.

I don’t like troublemakers and in Muslera, I genuinely think we have a better prospect for the club that we are. There is not enough room for two top goalkeeping talents at any one club and for that reason, it has to be Fernando for me.

Zauri on loan to Sampdoria…I mean r we really that big a team? No,we don’t need money…We’ll just keep on loaning out players until they’re too old to be sold for real cash…
